Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I don't believe the Western response is containment. If it were, we would have shut down our borders and put people into longer quarantines.

I think the response is controlled exposure. We know the virus can't be contained, we are mostly focused on slowing the spread to avoid overwhelming our healthcare systems.

The best guess of some doctors is that every bed in the US will be occupied by May 8. This is from a presentation by the American Hospitals Association, who do have an agenda (they want more money for hospitals.) There's a recognition that this will tax our resources, the concern is the rate at which they will be utilized.

Good timeline for when things could happen. You have to decide if you're a pessimist and agree with it, or an optimist who thinks a little skepticism is in order.

That's possible, considering what I read in the UK report.

I suppose the reasoning is that slowing down the spread to give time for a vaccine to be developed is better (for the economy) than shutting everything down.

The markets are plunging because investors are high IQ and know what's up -- it's much worse than governments are letting on. But don't worry plebs, says the government: it's just "the flu", no matter what, keep going to work and make the elites more money. If you get sick and die, well, the govt doesn't care, elites dont work or mix with plebs, so they'll be just fine.
Most investors are super emotional tards that react without thought and adjust later.

You're overestimating the impulsive mongs that focus on the stock market, considering how just last week they had the market spike despite shit obviously going downhill to everyone with two braincells to rub together. The assorted mouthbreathers probably lost millions.

So the real reason for America's perpetual low-intensity warfare is to keep their doctrine up-to-date with real-world examples without bleeding the country dry?
America's Globocop doctrine is the mutilated shambling corpse of Domino Theory applied to whatever threat emerges next. I personally hate it, but it does have the fringe benefit of keeping the US military and select allies up to date on emergent threat doctrine.
America has learned a lot on how to deal with "little green men" insurgencies.

But to the point, America is a superpower due to military might and economic/political prowess. Piss off the US enough and it will rain fire from the sky on your capital city within a week.
China is a titan of industry and can easily convince lesser nations to play ball their way (see Belt and Road). What they cannot do yet is as Mao says and force change from the barrel of a gun. The most the Chinese can do is try to make your nation an economic pariah.

Re: the Western Response.

Getting this Reddit thread in a lot of emails today from people trying to make sense of the virus.

There's some general information about the symptomology along with details about what this WHO team discovered. It goes on to talk about best practices for fighting the disease and tosses in some CCP propaganda for good measure.

"COVID-19 is spreading with astonishing speed; COVID-19 outbreaks in any setting have very serious consequences; and there is now strong evidence that non-pharmaceutical interventions can reduce and even interrupt transmission. Concerningly, global and national preparedness planning is often ambivalent about such interventions. However, to reduce COVID-19 illness and death, near-term readiness planning must embrace the large-scale implementation of high-quality, non-pharmaceutical public health measures. These measures must fully incorporate immediate case detection and isolation, rigorous close contact tracing and monitoring/quarantine, and direct population/community engagement."

The report this thread references is being circulated to public health ministries throughout the the Americans, the EU, Africa and Asia / South Pacific. If you're wondering why your country is handling the outbreak a particular way, this is what to expect your government will get to eventually.

Also, separately - for those of you looking with envy at China converting over factories to mask production, might be a good time to look at what Honeywell is up to.

3M doesn't have enough domestic mask production capabilities and their factories in India are prohibited from exporting them. Honeywell is producing masks in the US and it looks like they are getting a few extra billion from Trump to ramp up production. They automated most of their mask production lines around 2012, they can run them 24x7 and have been providing them to white label resellers for some time.

Honeywell also makes lung ventilators and oxygen tanks domestically. Was surprised to find out how many pies they have fingers in. They're like the GE for health / safety / medical, only their buyers are mostly Federal so they keep their supply chains domestic. It's almost as if someone planned for this to happen.

Is the WHO seriously advocating we use rhino horn and echinacia to treat Coronachan?

And China can't do that either with their factories shut down.

White House Fears Trump’s Handshake at CPAC Could’ve Exposed Him to the Coronavirus

Trump started the morning the way he normally does: he kicked a baby kitten in the face, drank a half goblet of baby goat milk which he promptly spat into the toilet that his interns call Sen. Lindsey Graham, and demanded that he be given a noggin of eel blood.

It wasn’t until the president learned that he may have come in contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, the disease that causes the Coronavirus, that he became upset. Despite the president’s proclivity for slathering his skin in tobiko—the tiny, orange stuff on sushi rolls— and his penchant for Russian prostitute urine, the president is a noted germaphobe.

So he’s got a right to be livid upon learning that the infected unnamed person shook hands with Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, whom Trump also shook hands with during the Conservative Political Action Conference last month.

The Washington Post notes that the Trump-Schlapp handshake now puts the president two degrees away from the virus that Trump has tried to downplay since its global devastation began being reported. The White House claims Trump was never in direct contact with the infected person and doesn’t have any symptoms, as he always sweats a lot when he hasn’t had his morning Diet Coke, and by Diet Coke, I mean a bump of Adderall.

From the Post:

There is growing tension among Trump administration officials, who now view the rapidly spreading outbreak as a black swan event that could consume the president’s fourth year in office, even as Trump remains reluctant to see much cause for concern, according to White House officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the internal mood.
“I’m not concerned at all,” Trump said Saturday when asked about the potential threat posed to the White House by the coronavirus.
He also pledged to keep holding “tremendous” political rallies, even as top public health officials within his government have called for millions of Americans to avoid large crowds and major events to reduce the risk of being infected.

White House officials have straight up said that they expect the outbreak to spread throughout the country and that it’s going to affect the president’s schedule.

Because Trump is the most vacationing president to ever openly root for racism, he spent the past weekend at…one guess. Don’t make that face, he could’ve gone somewhere different...Just guess...Fine, you’re right; he was in West Palm Beach, Fla., where he threw a temper tantrum after learning he was going to have to be briefed on the spreading virus and possible American crisis.

While the president continues to try and assuage financial market fears, his team is quietly concerned for his safety, considering most victims of the virus are senior citizens and Trump is 73, although he reportedly tells women that he’s a spry 54.

Despite the president’s attempts to act like the coronavirus isn’t a big deal, White House staff has been cleaning that nasty-ass White House on a regular basis and have encouraged people with flu-like symptoms to stay their asses home.

And if all of this hadn’t hurt Trump before, learning that he wasn’t going to be able to rally Sunday evening had to crush him as he’s the most rallying-ass president to ever be elected by Russians.

For the first time this year, Trump canceled a rally and no other large gathering events were on the president’s schedule, the Post notes.

Maybe now he will learn to sit his ass down.

What the hell is this? Some sort of satire?

8:02 a.m. Federal officials warn 7 companies allegedly selling phony coronavirus cure: The Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent warning letters to seven companies that are accused of selling unapproved products — including teas, essential oils and colloidal silver — as coronavirus treatment. According to the FDA, there aren’t any approved vaccines or drugs to treat the virus yet. The agencies sent the letters to the following companies: Vital Silver; Quinessence Aromatherapy Ltd.; N-ergetics; GuruNanda, LLC; Vivify Holistic Clinic; Herbal Amy LLC; and The Jim Bakker Show.

I really needed that good laugh this morning. Leave it to the absolute woos to try this kind of shit. I'm honestly surprised not to see some familiar MLMs in there, like Young Living and NuSkin. Or maybe a parent company is listed and I'm just out of the loop.

Chug that garlic essential oil, boys and girls. It's not a vaccine and it won't cure the Wu-flu, but you'll smell like AIDS in a large enough radius to self quarantine even if you leave home. Get yourself some gloves and you'll be good to go.

This page is going to be useful for chileans here, since it shows all the current confirmed cases and the regions where they are. So far, there are 13 cases. Gets updated every day at 12:00 pm.
It's getting really close to where I live...

Isn’t all life satire?

I read that fast and thought for a moment you said, "Isn't all life Sartre?"

I have a few chicks in my facebook feed that are hardcore Young Living people. They are insufferable. I can't comment about a single thing without them popping into my post to let me know they have an oil that could help me. If YL "invents" a cure I'm sure I'll know about it immediately.
