Italy's extending its measures to whole country now:

Italy is extending its strict coronavirus quarantine measures, which include a ban on public gatherings, to the entire country.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the measures, which come into effect on Tuesday, were necessary to defend the most fragile members of the community.

He added that the best thing for the citizens of Italy was to stay at home.

Italy's coronavirus death toll jumped on Monday by 97 to 463. It is the worst-hit country after China.

To late. Way toooooooo flippen late.

These images may finally be what it takes to shock my elderly panicced (and toilet paper/paper towel hoarding) mother into a sense of reality again.

Maybe.

Fuck the traditional media with terrifying Wu Flu updates daily. I can point to the world tracker of coronavirus cases and show her that Canada has only 60 cases dispite being a major trading partner with China and that her odds of even encountering anyone WITH the virus let alone getting it are in the neighborhood of winning the Lotto 6/49 twice in a row PLUS being hit by lighting, but it won't mean a fucking thing to her because THE NEWS told her otherwise. (even though it only intimated otherwise)

Sigh.

Need more vodka as prophylactic against THE WU FLU!!!!

the risk increases exponentially each day. We’re not even at the start of the bell curve yet.

denialists are just as bad as panicking boomers imho

So I thought I'd share a horrifying story of my BF's cousin coming into visit the other day. This woman is a thot past her prime who does whatever she has to, to keep a roof over her head. She comes over mildly drunk to pay a visit and to gossip about her insipid concerns and the entire time she's just deep-clogged-throat coughing the entire time, then she puts her fucking mouth on our pot bowl and shit, trying to hug everybody try people's drinks and the entire time i'm just trying not to freak out on her spreading her gross prostitute TB-Corona-Hybrid to everyone. Needless to say the moment she left I scrubbed down everything she touched. Doesn't even cover her mouth when she straight hackin' up spit over herself.

Update:

As I have posted previously my wife was sticken with Type A Influenza which immediately turned into pneumonia, that she got while recovering in a care home (Sniff) for a hip fracture. Type A Influenza is a very nasty virus which kills thousands of people each year... Young or old.

As posted previously I have been consistantly exposed to a great many sick area as well as caring for my wife which is 24/7 care while she recovers. She still has the virus but she is now slowly recovering from this whole affair. She is a lot better now than she was a few days ago.

The reason why I have not been infected during this flu season is again the following.

1. I wash my hands with a BAR OF IVORY SOAP!
2. I separate my outside clothes with my inside clothes and have a designated area to make that change.
3. I wash my outside clothing in hot water and it is done separately from my inside clothes.
4. I wash my door knobs, handles, and areas with 50% rubbing alcohol. I do this to my car as well.
5. I shower Daily.
6. I Avoid large crowds. Period.
7. EAT HEALTHY and eat at home if can as you reduce the change of contact from fast food joints.

This is how you have to handle the Flu Season and this is how you have to handle the Corona Virus.

What is going to make things worse is the greed of the government, the greed of corporations, and the ignorance of people.

That is why the shit has hit the fan. Stupid Greed and Stupid People.

If you have the common sense you will listen to those people that are giving out logical advice on this situation.

1. You don't have to go full on retard in Prepping. I am first hand proof of this and am living pretty damned good ATM in plague land.

2. You are not going to get all of the truth out their in main stream media but you can gather the information and make the logical deductions to protect yourself and your loved ones.

If you have listened to us months ago on what to do you are waaaay ahead of the curb and you should be fine.

But most importantly right now. Continue to gather the information needed to we as a hole can continue to make those logical decisions in order to keep us Kiwi's safe and ahead of the curve because once again....

The Governments and the Media are withholding the truth.

Wait, so you're saying that stocking up on toilet paper and having the cleanest asshole in human history had NO impact on your resilience to Corona-chan? Well that's news to me.

It's incredible how political this situation has become.

Republicans are downplaying it because they're worried about the economy affecting Trump's re-election, and Democrats are cheering on as the stock markets plummet and as the media generates mass hysteria to affect the 2020 election. All of this is a great reminder that Republican or Democrat ... Our elected representatives simply do not care about the well being of their constituents.

Trump and the federal government have signed off on research for this virus. Lots of money has been thrown at the situation, so it's just a lie that Trump isn't doing anything. However, Trump's initial press conference was not a good move on his part, as it easily came across as downplaying the situation. He wasn't being the brash straight-talker that a lot of his supporters appreciate about him when it came to this.

Anyway, do I think this will get worse before it gets better? Yes. But I'm not expecting the apocalypse.

Everything turns political these days. Everything,

Up front - don't watch TV, don't read newspapers. Get my info from a number of places, mostly on line.

I would say President Trump knew the magnitude of the problems coming up from the get-go. Believe he downplayed the situation so as to not cause a panic. To come across too brashly could easily have been portrayed as being flippant about the thing. Guy can't win. He's also made VP Pence his point man on this. You can be sure these two men, and likely other people as well, are getting the latest and best intelligence briefings on this multi-faceted issue.

Sadly, both certain Dems and certain Republicans are trying to make political hay out of this, as they try to do with everything.

Also sadly, agree that the vast majority of elected officials, partisan and non-partisan, at any and all levels, don't care one bit about the well-being of their constituents. Matter of fact, they wish we'd all just go away and leave them in peace to collect their bloated paychecks and later, their bloated pensions. In reality, the only time you even actually see some of these elected officials is when they come to your door seeking your vote. That's the ONLY time you matter to them. Otherwise, got a problem? If lucky, you might find someone who will help. Otherwise, if you can afford it, get a lawyer. If not, you're fucked. You see, these "elected officials" can't make anything off you. You aren't a part of some pressure group, or whatever they call it these days. They can't look good helping you. And since you didn't contribute to their campaign, you don't exist.

Going a little further, would say the vast majority of all "elected officials" believe they are the people's masters, not their servants. This also goes for many governmental employees, at all levels. They believe they are your masters and you are worthy only of their contempt. Their agenda trumps your needs. Just pay your taxes, obey their stupid laws, and shut the fuck up. Don't think so? Go to a town/city/county/state office/organization. A little PL - last month was to have an appointment on 14 February with one of my doctors, who now works at the county hospital. A bunch of us followed him over from his previous hospital. Appointment was made in August 2019. Doctor's office at the hospital called me a week before. Said I needed to change my appointment since the hospital was having a Valentine's Day party. Told them that was the most unprofessional thing I had ever heard of, blowing off patient care for some party. Changed the appointment. Emailed the hospital and told them what I thought, letting them know their competition wouldn't have done such a thing. Response - zero, of course.

Agree this situation will get worse before it gets better, but succumbing to worry and panic doesn't make it. In the military, we say, "I can't win the entire war, but I can win my little piece of it." Same thing here. Sorry, you aren't likely to discover a miracle cure or vaccine for the virus. But you can take care of yourself, and help take care of family/friends. You can be a tower of strength, secure in the knowledge what you do for yourself, your family, and your friends matters and is appreciated. You don't count on much of anything from government - least nothing good, anyway. You do your best. You do everything you can. You do not give up. You do not quit. That's how you win your part of this war. Yes, you do have it within you to rise to this challenge. You already know not to expect much help from the government, at least in the USA. On the whole, they're probably more concerned about maintaining a diversity of bureaucrats dealing with this thing, taking care of themselves, their families, and their friends, and looking good for the media than actually doing good for people. No, we're just an unwanted burden to them. We actually expect them to do their jobs. Right...

I'll win my piece of the war. So will you. 👍

I don't believe the Western response is containment. If it were, we would have shut down our borders and put people into longer quarantines.

I think the response is controlled exposure. We know the virus can't be contained, we are mostly focused on slowing the spread to avoid overwhelming our healthcare systems.

The best guess of some doctors is that every bed in the US will be occupied by May 8. This is from a presentation by the American Hospitals Association, who do have an agenda (they want more money for hospitals.) There's a recognition that this will tax our resources, the concern is the rate at which they will be utilized.

Good timeline for when things could happen. You have to decide if you're a pessimist and agree with it, or an optimist who thinks a little skepticism is in order.

Well, then I see some things happening. First, we identify and stock existing large spaces (school gyms, civic/convention centers) to be used for non-critical care, people recovering and needing only basic care and some nursing for a few days before going home. Where do we get the people? Crunch coming in May? Why not temporarily "draft" graduating nurses, doctors, and medical technicians completing courses, and if need be also "draft" those doctors/registered nurses in the last year of training. The carrot - pick up $10,000 of their college loans. We also bring in all the military medical people we can, both regulars and reservists not already involved. And let's look at using any empty beds in the VA hospitals all over the country. Second, we may need to do a triage should things get bad enough. We treat only those where treatment will make the difference. Hope not, because triage really eats shit.

Anyone have a better idea? Just my thoughts. Let's hope like hell that governments world-wide are at least considering this scenario, because if this happens here, it may well happen in other countries.

LIVE TRUMP BRIEFING ON CORONA
This is the most important news conference of his Presidency, probably of the last 20 years.

Trump is announcing some things that are important to anyone concerned about Corona Virus in North America:

- He's asking Congress for Federal Sick Leave for every American. This will allow people to stay home if they are sick. From what I hear, it will be up to 28 days per worker annually.

- He's going to ask for a break on payroll taxes. Employers will not be so trigger happy with layoffs during this period. This is chiefly going to benefit airlines.

These 2 measures would dramatically transform America's workforce. Betting if they get put in place, they stay in place and businesses use this to offload all their PTO.

The Surgeon General was there. He looks like Young Mike Tyson, sounded like him at times. Found that reassuring.

The Director of the CDC announced they are distributing a prevention guide. Have not seen it yet, but glad to know they are messaging about prevention.

These are the specific steps every American is being advised to follow during this period:
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
    • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
    • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
There was a little drama, it was nuanced. Trump was asked if he has been tested. Great question from reporters, he already looked pissed and just walked out of the room. If he said yes, the headlines tomorrow would read TRUMP IS GETTING TESTED WHILE AMERICANS WAIT. If he said no, the headlines tomorrow would read TRUMP IS THREATENING NATIONAL SECURITY BY NOT GETTING TESTED.

The whole time I was thinking, how much blame should we put on the partisan media for where we are right now? How much of this is happening because people are so tuned out from overdosing on bullshit the past 3 years we didn't demand draconian measures and closed borders? Millions are going to die because the public has been kept ignorant of the threat and focused on political outcomes they'd like to see.

Trump has had some challenging times during his Presidency, right now he's dealing with the stock market, the bond market, a deadly plague, oil price wars that threaten our nation's energy independence, and the continued threat of Necromancer Pelosi's witchcraft. He looked pretty serious marching out of the presser while the White House Press Corps sounded like kindergarteners wanting to know about the morning snacks. This was the first time I thought he looked like the only adult in the room.

In the wake of Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, Facebook and Twitter have been forced to respond to the proliferation of fake news on their platforms. And while many probably assume the bulk of that misinformation is political in focus, trolls and bots on social media have actually been linked to the marketing of vaping products, the anti-vaccination movement and now, fake cures for coronavirus.

A quick glance at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or TikTok will provide a slew of these fake cures: garlic, masturbation, bleach, even cocaine.

Prominent QAnon YouTuber Jordan Sather, for example, tweeted to his more than 121,000 followers that a "miracle mineral solution," which effectively involves drinking bleach, can wipe out COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
1583801465500.png

"Not only is chlorine dioxide (aka 'MMS') an effective cancer cell killer, it can wipe out coronavirus too," he wrote. "Big Pharma wants you ignorant."

The FDA has long warned that drinking chlorine dioxide products can lead to "severe vomiting, severe diarrhea, life-threatening low blood pressure caused by dehydration, and acute liver failure." Yet, with each new outbreak or high-profile illness that arises, these products are seemingly promoted on social media and sold by independent distributors anew.

Sadly, drinking bleach isn't the only dangerous "cure" that bad actors are peddling online to a population increasingly anxious about the current outbreak. The most recent rumor spreading at a rapid pace is that cocaine will counteract COVID-19.

On Facebook — where a third-party fact-checking program is in place — many of these posts now have false information warnings that serve both to warn users of the content's unreliability and to deprioritize them in the platform's algorithm. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also addressed the issue in a March 3 post, saying the company is working with national ministries of health and organizations "to help them get out timely, accurate information on the coronavirus."
1583801522600.png

On Twitter, however, some of the most prominent posts spreading dangerous misinformation have gone unchecked — even from verified accounts. Bizzle Osikoya, for example — a Nigerian music and entertainment developer with more than 190,000 followers — tweeted a doctored image, which purports to be a screenshot of a breaking news segment on TV. It has gotten nearly 6,000 likes and almost 3,000 retweets, and has remained on the platform for more than a month without any sort of warning the content's falsehood.
1583801573400.png

For the first time Sunday, Twitter rolled out a "manipulated media" label. However, as CNET senior producer Dan Patterson points out, this label can still be problematic in that it may give users a false sense of security that all posts without it are accurate. As illustrated by Bizzle Osikoya's tweet above, that is clearly not the case.
1583801606300.png

In fact, according to the Washington Post, an investigation by the U.S. State Department found that a staggering 2 million tweets in circulation during a three-week period between January 20 and February 10 propagated coronavirus conspiracy theories and misinformation. That means that 7% of all coronavirus content on the platform was false.

To make matters worse, many of those tweets reportedly linked to YouTube videos, signaling that the current deluge of coronavirus misinformation has spread well beyond Twitter and Facebook.

On Sunday, in an effort to combat such viral disinformation, the French Ministry of Health tweeted a firm rebuttal: "No, cocaine does not protect against COVID-19. Cocaine is an addictive stimulant drug. Using it can seriously harm people's health and create undesirable effects."
1583801656800.png

In perhaps the most stunning sign of the times, the World Health Organization created a TikTok account to combat all of the misinformation there and give teens the real facts on what is rapidly becoming the most popular social media platform among that demographic.

Incredibly, their TikTok on when and how face masks should be worn already has more than 40 million views. Their first video on how to protect yourself from coronavirus has more than 33 million. So, there may be hope for the truth yet.

When asked for comment, a Twitter spokesperson told CBS News, "We continue to expand our dedicated search prompt feature to ensure that when you come to the service for information about COVID-19, you are met with credible, authoritative content at the top of your search experience. We have been consistently monitoring the conversation on the service to make sure keywords — including common misspellings — also generate the search prompt."

"Our global Trust & Safety team is continuing its zero-tolerance approach to platform manipulation and any other attempts to abuse our service at this critical juncture," the spokesperson continued. "At present, we're not seeing significant coordinated platform manipulation efforts around these issues. However, we will remain vigilant and have invested substantially in our proactive abilities to ensure trends, search, and other common areas of the service are protected from malicious behaviors. As ever, we also welcome constructive and open information sharing from governments and academics to further our work in these areas — we're in this together."

An Economic Pandemic

With markets plunging worldwide, Trump does an about-face and promises "major" efforts to contain the coronavirus and ease economic pain.

By Keith Johnson | March 9, 2020, 3:29 PM
Traders like Peter Tuchman were hit with a global markets rout on Monday, fueled by crashing oil prices and mounting worries over the impact of the coronavirus, Mar. 9, 2020.

The coronavirus now appears to be infecting economies as quickly as it does people.

An oil price war is fueling a broader, global market rout as investors are increasingly panicking over the economic impact of the COVID-19. Meanwhile, yields on long-term U.S. government debt—a port in a storm for nervous investors—fell to all-time lows, a clear indicator of a looming recession that could come more quickly than many experts feared.

Oil prices plunged about 25 percent in New York and London, dragging down stock markets in Europe and Asia. In New York, stocks fell 1,800 points within minutes of the opening bell before trading was briefly suspended, and traded well down the rest of the day, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average finishing down 2013.76 points or nearly 8 percent, the worst single-day drop since the financial crisis of 2008.
“This virus is as economically contagious as it is medically contagious,” said Richard Baldwin, a professor of international economics at the Graduate Institute in Geneva. It amounts to a triple whammy for the manufacturing sector in most major economies: outright closures in many Asian plants, supply chain disruptions all over, and topped off with a plunge in demand for cars, electronics, and many other manufactured goods as people take a wait-and-see attitude to the crisis.

“This one is economically big, because it is now hitting the big economies,” Baldwin said. “The size of the economic shock is a different order of magnitude than any pandemic we have seen.”

The fear now gripping financial markets reflects a recognition of this growing economic impact. The coronavirus, which had already disrupted factories and trade in China and across East Asia, is now wreaking havoc in Europe. Japan’s economy shrank last quarter even more than initially thought, and Tokyo is toying with another huge fiscal stimulus to goose the economy back to life. Germany, too, is mulling a multibillion-euro economic injection to offset the worst of the crisis, while France is staring at now-stagnant growth. Italy has essentially shut down the industrial northern part of the country as cases and fatalities continue to mount, all but guaranteeing another recession. (Scratch that: Italy announced late Monday a lockdown on movement in the entire country.)

While U.S. President Donald Trump initially dismissed concern over the virus and its impacts as “fake news,” some economists are predicting that the aftershocks could send the world’s biggest economy into a recession this year. With Trump facing re-election in November, the president, Vice President Mike Pence and their advisers held a news conference after markets closed Monday to lay out further efforts to contain the virus domestically and to ease the economic pain of Americans who might be affected, including a payroll tax cut. The president said he would announce “major” measures on Tuesday after consulting with Congress.

“This blindsided the world and I think we handled it very, very well,” Trump said.

China, where the virus first broke out, seems to have passed the peak of its crisis, and economic activity is slowly returning. The concern is that other major economies, especially the United States, will see a big spike in the number of virus cases with the corresponding impacts on trade, travel, and manufacturing.
The economic fallout of the virus is making clear just how interdependent the global economy really is, despite years of efforts by Trump to partially undo globalization by forcing companies to move supply chains out of China and restricting trade in certain critical sectors. What’s not yet clear is whether the ultimate fallout of the virus will be to accelerate the breakdown of globalization, sending firms scurrying to bring manufacturing back home so as to avoid these kinds of disruptions, or just the opposite.

“In the longer run, it could encourage more populism and undo these value chains,” Baldwin said. “Or it might be that we finally understand that if somebody gets sick in China, it’s a problem for all the G-7 countries” and end up boosting multilateral cooperation and coordination, he said.

Russia’s Defiance Sets the Stage for Oil Price ‘Bloodbath’
Moscow rejects OPEC’s effort to avert a coronavirus-driven price collapse, shutting down an agreement to cut crude output.

A pedestrian wearing a face mask walks past a board displaying the Nikkei 225 Index on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Feb. 25. Japan's stock market joined the global rout as fears of a prolonged economic hit from the coronavirus outbreak have chilled investor sentiment.

World Stock Markets Begin Betting on a Coronavirus Slowdown
Big declines in the United States, Europe, and Asia and an inverted yield curve indicate market players are starting to fear the worst.

Monday’s bloodbath on global markets was a timely reminder of how the real-world economic impacts of the virus, the oil market, geopolitics, and the global market panic are all closely linked.

Because of the physical disruption to global economic activity, forecasters expect global oil consumption to decline this year, for the first time since the financial crisis a decade ago. On Monday, the International Energy Agency said it expects global oil demand to fall by almost 100,000 barrels a day—compared with expected growth of more than 800,000 barrels before the outbreak. That collapse in demand comes amid a massive oversupply of oil. “The situation we are witnessing today seems to have no equal in oil market history,” International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol said.

Last week, big oil producers, led by Saudi Arabia, thought they had found a way to limit the fallout from that declining demand by cutting oil production, which would have helped prop up prices. But Russia declined to go along with the production cuts, preferring to inflict pain on the still-growing U.S. oil industry instead. Once that Saudi-Russian agreement broke down on Friday, all bets were off: Over the weekend, Saudi Arabia dramatically cut the sales price of its own oil exports, sending the price of oil down as much as 30 percent in overnight trading, which in turn scared the pants off markets in Asia, Europe, and finally the United States, which in turn sent investors fleeing toward safe debt like U.S. Treasury bonds.

Russia’s refusal to go along with the cuts makes some sense from Moscow’s point of view. Russia has squirrelled away about $150 billion in a rainy-day fund, and officials on Monday said that would enable the country to weather as much as six years of oil prices below the $42 a barrel or so that Moscow needs to balance its budget. And by ensuring that oil prices fall, Russia could take a swipe at the U.S. oil patch, which is uniquely vulnerable this year after spending years running up debt and which is running out of ways to improve productivity, leaving it more exposed to falling prices.

More to the point, from Russia’s perch: The U.S. shale energy boom is what has enabled recent U.S. administrations to wage more aggressive financial warfare through sanctions, including against Russia and regimes it supports, such as Venezuela. Sanctions on Venezuelan or Iranian oil would in the past have led to higher global oil prices, but rising U.S. production kept that threat at bay—tempting first the Obama administration and now the Trump administration to use sanctions much more often. Ditto for the shale gas boom, which has turned the United States into an exporter of natural gas and a potential alternative to Russian supplies in Europe. The shale gale makes it that much easier for Washington to threaten sanctions on Russia’s big Nord Stream 2 pipeline to Germany, for instance.

Understanding Saudi Arabia’s plan to slash prices and ramp up production is a little trickier. Like Russia, it bristled at competition from U.S. oil producers and wasn’t happy that its rivals would benefit from higher oil prices bought with its own sacrifices. But prices were already sliding after OPEC failed to reach an agreement last week; it’s not clear that starting an all-out price war will make Russia regret its decision to ditch Saudi cooperation last week at the OPEC meeting and sign on to a fresh pact to curb output.

“If the goal is to shock Russia with weak oil prices in order to drag Moscow back to the table, we think it will fail,” noted Amrita Sen, the chief oil analyst at Energy Aspects, a consultancy, in a note. “This new Saudi approach will only harden Russia’s position.”

The move is another risky gambit from Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Saudi Arabia needs crude prices closer to $80 a barrel to balance its budget. It’s also got fewer currency reserves and more public spending than it did in 2014, the last time OPEC crashed oil prices to drive out U.S. rivals.

“Saudi Arabia can afford to wait out low oil prices. But, there is little to suggest that Riyadh is in a better position now than in 2014 to absorb sustained low prices,” said Torbjorn Soltvedt, the principal Middle East and North Africa analyst at Verisk Maplecroft, a risk consultancy.
And lower oil prices will also mean more economic pain for other big producers, from Iraq to Mexico to Brazil.

But the immediate pain was felt in the U.S. oil patch, where shares in many energy companies fell by nearly half on Monday, outstripping even the wider carnage in the rest of the market. With oil prices headed lower, some producers wasted no time in announcing cuts to drilling and production plans. Most analysts expect a wave of bankruptcies and restructuring to tear through the U.S. shale sector if low oil prices persist—which could end up being an economic black eye for Trump in traditionally red states in an election year.
