Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

So here's my take on what's been happening with Italy, and it's caused me to reassess how impactful I believe coronavirus is going to be. Their death rate has been way out of whack with everywhere else, sitting at 5% of all cases even as day after day the totals grew exponentially. Everywhere else was much lower, so either there's some super deadly strain in Italy (unlikely, they'd pick that up real quick by sequencing it) something really wrong with the health care system that isn't able to treat complications (also unlikely, italy has developed health infrastucture that is right at its limits now but still isn't letting people choke to death in a car park. so the only thing that makes sense to explain a 5% death rate is there must be *LOADS* more people infected that they don't know about. Like a seriously big pool of asymptomatic or borderline showing it, and it must be almost the same number again, to get the figures down to 2.5% everywhere else is seeing. I think this thing in is loads more people that don't know it themselves and if countries don't get a handle on testing and encouraging isolation (it's worked REALLY WELL in china.. ok it's authoritarian as fuck but zonal isolation and travel bans stop it in its tracks) they will be overwhelmed like Italy. They're in full lock down now. :O

It was established a while ago that Italy is doing so poorly because they have some of the oldest people. Something like 60% of it's population are over age 40. Couple it with a heavy smoking culture, Italy has a population of 60 Million or so. In 2018, there were 11.6 million cigarette smokers in Italy. Smoking was more common among males than among females and it was particularly habitual for men aged 25 to 44 years old, and their habit of fairly frequent interpersonal contact and you literally have a perfect storm for mass death.

Dutch town randomly tests 300 medical workers who didn't travel and weren't exposed to Corona patients. 10% test positive.

IMO. Judging by this article it is already way more widespread than we know. 30 Tested positive but how many other had it and it's now cleared up? or never showed symptoms?

The problem is the people who are getting sick don't know they have Corona so they're just back to their usual business once they've cleared up enough, or never even got sick, and thus infect others because they're getting it very mildly.

I suggest everyone keep replies short in this thread because holy fuck I don't feel like reading pages of autism journals.

Anyways, stock market is on the verge of getting fucked like a red headed stepchild on pornhub. Because let's be real, White House is delaying that national emergency response to prevent accelerated freefall.

I said it earlier but really, sure people can panic and pull their money but it's not like you can do anything with it. This isn't a war where you can move your money to a different market and carry on with your day. Disease can hit you if you have one dollar or one million and while having more money might make your treatment better at the end of the day you're still sick as well. Tanking the economy because they're worried because of a disease doesn't benefit anyone and arguably only makes the situation worse. Eventually this will end and things will slowly go back to business as usual, although hopefully with the caveat of getting some manufacturing back in various countries instead of relying to heavily on China.

Everywhere is well past the point of full blown quarantine serving any purpose. Chances are it is well past the saturation point. You’ve already come in contact with it. unless you’ve been isolated from humanity since October. It is well past critical mass on every inhabited continent, and likely has been since the day we first heard of it. Anyplace with no reported cases, simply hasn’t discovered them yet.

Correct me if I'm off? From what I understand, it's highly likely that the original Wu has since mutated several times, and a swab calibrated for OG Corona might not register if a virus caught in Podunk, Oklahoma is the real deal, but still 3-4 degrees separated from the original.

And by then (also from my somewhat limited delving), the entire nature of the illness caused by the virus can end up varying in severity & duration.

Yeah, from my experience if Walmart is willing to loosen up it's draconian attendance policy to allow their slaves some time off when they're almost dead, I'd be inclined to think that this shit is starting to get serious.
I worked there in my younger years and they didn't give a fuck if you had a broken bone, were in traction or near dying from pneumonia, if you have a pulse, be there or be fucking square.

If someone died on the clock, I could see one of the managers coming out and shouting: "DID SOMEONE CLOCK HIM OUT?! IF HE'S DYING ON THE CLOCK, THAT'S TIME THEFT! WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING STANDING AROUND?! Get back to work or you're going to get a coaching!"

'Coaching' is Walmart-speak for getting pulled into the office and getting bitched at, by the way. Only difference between that and a regular bitching out, is that with a coaching, there's paperwork involved.

I've also heard rumors from some former co-workers of mine that they're canceling orders and experiencing severe shortages. If that shit starts spreading through distribution centers it's going to be ugly for them.

Hotel bookings are dropping. Scored a room in Vegas that dropped by a hundred dollars a night from last week. Pandemics are the best time for travel if you have a powerful and sexy immune system (maybe not by airplane though).
So your saying that I can rent out a hotel room cheap AND enjoy the degeneracy of Las Vegas? Cool!

Expect major security breaches as federal government employees start working from home. With all those network connections there are going to be a ton of security breaches. And given the nature of some of these employees, I am certain we are going to see some fairly sensitive information in about 3-6 weeks turn up on the Internet.

And with quarantines in place, hackers will have nothing better to do.

i'm actually flabbergasted that india hasn't exploded in cases yet considering population density. i guess we'll see if the "heat kills the virus" statement carries water here.

How are you even going to track it in poor countries where people frequently die at home from undetermined causes without any contact with the healthcare system?

South Korea reports 242 new cases of coronavirus and 6 new deaths, raising total to 7,755 cases and 60 dead

Death toll seems low compared to the number of cases. Either they're doing something different which the rest of the world needs to emulate or their numbers aren't reliable.

Okay, seems like this needs to happen every day. RELAX. We all knew the virus would spread. Looks like a lot of effort is going into trying to slow the spread.

Time to face facts. If you aren't over 60 with health issues, or less than 60 and have immune system problems, you aren't real likely to catch this virus. Saw a list of some people who had died of the virus some pages back today. Believe all but one were in their late 50's or older.

Seriously, if you really want to help yourself these days please keep the above in mind. Matter of fact, stop worrying about yourself and turn that energy toward older relatives who could catch this. I don't believe my kids are worrying about me and I'm in the high-risk category. Am not worrying about this at all.

Here in the USA, and I'll also say in Canada/UK/Oz/NZ, we'll be okay. Gonna be food on the shelves, power, gas, water will flow. Trucks and trains will move. You know the best way to keep all the store shelves from being denuded? Don't panic buy. Personally, I don't drink bottled water. Tap is just fine for me.

And, for my fellow Americans, believe any lockdown, if there are any, won't be China-style. Can you imagine the videos? Anyway, locking down a big US city is a non-starter. If anything, the powers that be might do better checking on high-risk people living with another high-risk person (an elderly couple) or living alone. These people may not have any way to get anywhere, or may be too sick to go buy food, etc. Could be a lot of lonely older people dying of this, quietly, and nobody will know until the bodies start to smell.

Uncle Joe's bottom line today: Relax. You aren't likely to catch the virus. Wash your hands. Avoid gatherings. Maybe stop by the place of an elderly person/couple you know and see how they are doing. Time to start living beyond yourself. 👍

I have a question for you, tovarishch Stalin. It is related to your earlier post about how the governments knew about this pandemic well in advance and already have plans in place.

I guess that big part of plan is how to stem the panic and how to divulge the news to the public . I guess the strategy was to downplay it severely at first, and to test very small group. And to dispatch people to media with the refrain: "it's just a flu bro" until it will become clear to everyone it's not really a flu. Amrite?

the same way we did at the start of this thread, with hundreds of videos of people coofing, crowding hospitals, and fainting in marketplaces.
it took off in iran fairly quickly and they're nowhere near as crowded as india. plus india doesn't have draconian censorship like china and iran afaik, so i imagine word would get out quickly.

Though I fully agree with you the main FUCKING PROBLEM is the REEEETARDS who do not look at this site are circle jerking themselves to death.

The governments and media are not telling the truth and are making things far worse to the mass sheeple out there. Those people who do not think. I watch today my local news caster stated the Virus spreading is SLOWING down... WTF man the sheeple will look at that and go back to their usual stupid routine and then of course get infected.

These sheeple are the ones buying up the TP or the wipes because the assholes on the media circuit wants the viewing/ click ratings.

I can go right now to my local walley world and buy the right disinfectant for this problem for $1.67 and there are 2 pallets full of this stuff. AND yet there are no wipes because again some asshole on twitter is reporting pseudo news.

What people on Kiwifarm should do is to point NORMAL people to this site so they can get what is really going on so they can see and take action on how to deal with this virus. In this way our helpful information can spread more to the masses.

So that more people can avoid of being a statistic. Spread the word about our logical think tank so that more people can not only learn what is going on but give us their input on what is going on with them.

This is how we can win and be safe against any virus/illness/disaster/situation.

By working together.

I hate to bite in on this. Anyone reading the news - other than Fox - knows this virus is serious, and it is spreading. I mean, to think otherwise is silly. Virtually any internet search shows essentially red alarms bells the size of Godzillas balls that we're fucked. But, if you follow Trumps Twitter or follow Fox news then sure, "Its not as bad as the flue".

On MSNBC right now they had an actual virologist - not a talking head - saying "Are you fucking crazy, of course it is in every state" and basically saying if you haven't figured that out yet, you need your head examined.

If mass cancellations of sporting events, gatherings, school closures, universities shutting down, the SEC working from home, Google having all employees working from home and no more planes in the sky, a fucking country being shut down isn't telling you we got a problem, then the problem is with their fucking brains, not the news cycle.

It's really telling how the media in the USA is actually freaking out about the thought of Trump getting the virus.

On another note, this entire debacle has exposed a glaring problem. China being a point of failure in the medical supply chain. This time it's a coronavirus, while crappy, it's not the end of the world. What would be the end of the world is a novel influenza virus or worse, a novel varicella virus. At the end of the day, Corona-chan is a mean version of the common cold. You do not want to meet a lethal version of airborne herpes. And all of our medical protective equipment from masks to precursor chemicals for medications and even the plastics to contain them, are made in China. Exclusively.

What happens if the supply lines to china break down? Or even more sinister, what if China hordes it all for themselves and leaves everyone out in the cold? Which is what they are doing RIGHT NOW. This is the clearest indication yet that the importation of medical equipment from abroad, especially from China, needs to be flatly banned.

Death toll seems low compared to the number of cases. Either they're doing something different which the rest of the world needs to emulate or their numbers aren't reliable.

Wouldn't doubt it's because they've got the social cohesion to keep it under control (maybe the USA is to thank for that due to our alliances,) and are about on par with Japan in terms of sanitation practices. Of those deaths, how many of 'em were geezers or heavy smokers? I personally think those two risk groups are the likeliest amongst the dead.

To be fair, in the past 5 years they've completely revamped the attendance/points system, and it's far more flexible than things used to be.

Then again, that doesn't account for individual managers being slave drivers. But by the time I moved on from that gig, nobody was being docked for being legitimately sick, doctors note or not.

And on many occasions, either myself or another manager had to send people home for coming in sick.

Anyways... malingerer-types at Walmart usually get shitcanned for other reasons, long before they'd even accumulated even 8hrs of sick time.

My buddy is in Italy, and he's already been out of school two weeks. the main thing he's facing right now is boredom. He's just been gaming, watching Netflix, and drawing. His bro is exceptional and still hung out w his friend from Milan and then didn't quarantine (they live in a different part of Italy).

ADDED: Harbor Freight Sent me an Email.
My Take? BULLSHIT. This is about the loss of money. There is no way they can continually disinfect a store when you have a continual flow of people coming in and out completely. This is not a hospital nor a medical facility. This is from professional experience of cleaning, disinfecting but mostly sanitizing large commercial buildings .

Yes they can try to Sanitize the place a bit but come on... Look at the some of the types of people there working at that store... Some of them are not the sharpest tools in the shed. Do you really think that they are doing this out of the kindness of their heart? Do you really think they care about you??? The customer???

Hell Fucking No....

It all about the money. This is what happens when your economy is based on consummerism. 80% of people in the US are in debt to their eyeballs. They want you to continue to buy things and continue to go into debt.

This is why the government... corporations... and the media are balled face lying to the public. This is why those fuckers who are on top do not give one shit about everyone else...

Because it is all about the money. That is what the governments... the corporations... the stockholders.... those with money see within the rest of humanity.

Your life is nothing but a price tag with an expiration date of usefullness of value.

And nothing more.

Here is what was posted to me which got me a bit on the pissed off side of things. Trying to get my money during a time where there is a probability of catching the bug... ANY bug since we are still in cold/flu season.
Yea it pissed me off a bit. Don't be fooled by this or anyone or any company trying to pan handle you to buy stuff.

TAKE CARE of Yourself First.

As communities begin to feel the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19), I want to share with you the steps we’re taking at Harbor Freight Tools to help protect the health and safety of our customers and associates, which is always our top priority.

We’re closely monitoring local and national reports on the evolving impact of COVID-19 and, based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organization and applicable public health agencies, we’ve developed plans and established a task force that will allow us to respond timely and appropriately.

Our housekeeping and sanitization efforts in our stores have been greatly expanded. We’re frequently disinfecting often-touched surfaces such as door handles, countertops, keypads, restroom surfaces, shopping carts and baskets. We’re asking all of our associates (and we urge everyone) to follow the CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of the infection.

We feel deeply for those who have been affected. Thankfully, as of now, we’re not aware of any associate contracting COVID-19. But we have implemented guidelines that instruct any associate who may develop symptoms or come into contact with infected individuals to stay home and follow the CDC’s instructions. And impacted associates will be compensated for their missed work hours.

At this time, all of our stores are open for business during their regular hours to meet the needs of our customers. If we become aware of any condition in any store that would make it unsafe, please rest assured that we’ll close the store until those conditions have been addressed.

Again, the health and safety of our customers and associates are our top priority and we’re committed to doing our part to help keep you safe.

Thank you,
