The statist obsession with being commanded by the government is so fucking weird because they want Trump to seize power over them even as they hate him.

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but consider three scenarios:

1. Trump tells everyone what to do, they do it, things go wrong. There's a single point of blame, and it's easy to criticize.
2. Trump lets the state/local authorities handle things, and everyone gets it wrong. Everyone is to blame, plus you can blame Trump for not centralizing a response.
3. Trump lets the state/local authorities handle things; some places get it wrong, but other places manage it correctly. Now you have clear losers and winners, but the biggest risk is in the large cities, which are run by Democrats, who will catch a lot of individual blame.

I think option 3 is what they're worried about. If TX and CA both have outbreaks, but TX handles it better, then there's a clear difference in competency between Republican and Democratic states.

There's no outcome that would force them to praise Trump, because goalposts will always be moved and counter-factual speculation is sketchy. But multiple simultaneous responses allow for a direct comparison between successful and failed responses. You can prove that a governor/mayor had better options available when other governors/mayors are trying them out.

Leftists like Bloomberg spent a good chunk of time trying to capture state level offices to force through their agenda, and they succeeded in places like Virginia. Having those newly installed Democrats get shown up as failures is a legit setback for them.

(Edit: Scenario #2 also runs the risk of local Democrats looking bad, while giving Trump scapegoats for failure. Only scenario #1 guarantees Trump gets all the blame, which is why they're trying to push him into it.)

This is the first week of real restrictions and cancellations and I'm already tired of my life being affected by decisions fueled almost purely by baseless fearmongering, and we're going to be seeing the cascade effects of this stuff all year. At this point I think the economic and social impact of the bad decisions being made right now based on that fearmongering will be far worse than anything the wuhan virus will do. In the process of trying to avoid one bad situation, we're creating one that's even worse. Makes no sense and people are eager to go along with it for some reason. I guess a few people getting sick and possibly dying is scarier to most people than possible economic recession and restriction of personal liberties. The illness will seriously impact a small minority of people, but the stuff we're trading for it impacts everyone.

eh, at this point I still enjoy it, maybe just for the spectacle alone. it might shake some people up, and then make some people more complacent, but in the end I think it's a net gain because the former would never happen if the daily grind would just keep going. so people have to quarantine for a week or two, might as well use that time-out for some reflection etc.

plus another recession was inevitable, you can't just keep growing. least this time it happened in a way that shined a bright light on a lot of stupid shit (and without making tards go blame trump because they don't understand what's happening), there's hope some people use that insight for improvements (individually and on a higher level). but you know what they say, hope dies last.

The thing is, this could all happen over and over again. There could be a new virus next year, and one after that, and one after that. The wu flu itself could mutate and return with a vengeance year after year. If we handled it the way we're handling it right now, every single time it happened, that would basically be it for human society. We'd have to shut down, cancel, and delay everything forever. We literally could not operate. We have to be smart and safe, but the panic has taken us well past that point. The fearmongering media and the irrational public are far bigger enemies to humanity than any bat soup pangolin anus chink virus.

nah, human society will never really die. we're a lot of things but also very adaptable (same way we adapted to an overpopulated planet in an industrialized society), so even if a virus/bacteria/fungus wipes out 90% of the population, that still leaves millions alive (nature usually has contingencies for the shit it cooks up, and even anything engineered will only work so far unless it is immortal and can teleport) since it won't reach every place while being able to keep going, that's physically impossible. so in the worse case you'll always have pockets of survivors. and heck, if the only pocket is some indigenous tribe in the ass end of the rain forest, maybe we deserved it.

sure you could argue how people would organize themselves afterwards, but when you're suddenly down to 1000 people with no real means of long distance travel that changes your perception and priorities. you can bet no one would bitch about trump anymore or demand people use the correct pronouns.

Okay, so in interest of not doxing myself I'm not going to show the conversations I have been having but there are a disturbing number of people online who seem to think that the virus came from the U.S. They say that they, or someone they knew experienced symptoms like corona, not uncommon since they can range from common cold to lungs drowning themselves, and that they are now convinced that it started in the U.S. Mind you they will state that this virus will be the end of us all but don't seem to realize that if it started here we should all be dead.

The way I see it, most reporters/journalists were obsoleted by the internet. The idea of a paid class of info-gatherers and collators made sense before YOU had the power to do that all yourself. The fundamental JOB of a reporter has been fatally wounded by the fact that it's now a money-losing proposition to pay them to actually report when the source of 90% of the info out there probably has a facebook page these days, hence, it's become entertainment wrapped up in a false mask of impartiality and integrity, same reason ESPN has become a useless pile of hot-takes, 90% of it was rendered pointless when the ability to get scores on your pocket-phone reached maturity.... what was left except selling the spectacle of reading the same sports results with "funny" banter?

I'd argue that the role of a reporter/journalist should be made more important by the current internet by acting as source vetting & intelligent presentation of facts.
