Fact is, they know people wouldn't follow being cooped up for four months or more. People just do not like having options taken away from them. Inslee just put all of King County in quarantine and shut down most businesses in Washington, expanding yesterday's shutdowns. Everyone in my extended family just lost their jobs, half the businesses they worked for said they're going out of business (almost everything mom-and-pop) and my neighbors are all outside having a neighborhood meeting and panicking. Grocery stores are among the unaffected businesses, and most of the employees at my local one have walked off knowing its a death trap. Things are picking up quite quickly, we've come a long way from just 2 days ago were everyone around here thought being a coronavirus epicenter was no big deal.

Spoiler: why the spanish right wing just fucking sucks

So first off we must go all the way back to the first spanish republic. The first spanish republic wasn't even a republic at all. It had 2 parties but they practiced "pucherazo", which means they literally decided who would win what before the elections happen and just ignore the votes and make up the result. It was an oligarchic mess of corruption and bullshit as should be obvious on that alone. So then we get Primo de Rivera. Primo was a general, he was reasonable, charismatic, intelligent, and had really strong principles. So as you can imagine when he found himself being the puppet of these fucking crazies, he decided it was about time for a coup. And so he created the falange... yeah hey funny thing. Know how Mussolinni is credited for being the inventor of fascism? Know how before Mussolinni fascism was just called Falangism? Primo was the actual inventor of fascism, he wrote the fucking book on how to fascist.

And then he rolled the tanks out and took over. UNNOPPOSED. Now, here's the funny shit. You'd think the assholes in charge would be pissed off that this mofo just managed to convince the army to kick their asses out. But thing is, the deals between the two parties had gotten so out of hands that they were starting full blown gang wars and shanking each other. So when Primo told them they would not be executed they saw him as their ticket out, dropped the mess on the guy and got the hell out of here before someone seeked some vengeance. Yeah... NO ONE liked the first spanish republic, literally no one.

So this is where the cognitive dissonance seems to start to appear. A well liked, reasonable and intelligent fascist dictator? That sounds crazy doesn't it? Well. Now it does, because we know how that goes. But at the time before seeing the result some might have fooled to believe it might be an extreme way to push shit forward. And Primo was... to some degree. He knew the risk before even those on the outside realize it. It took the world until Mussolini fucked up to realize why this sucked but Primonactually wrote about it before he even took over. So then why did he do it?

Well his plan was to get in, fix shit ASAP, and get the fuck out before corruption creeped in. It might seem like a solid plan to those more uneducated, probsbly seemed solid at the time, it wasn't. Poor guy must be rolling in his grave realizing what came out of it.

You see. Anyone who reads on how ALL dictatorships, no matter ideology go, knows when your authority depends entirely on the guy on top of you, then the only duty you have is to keep that guy happen, and much like hapened to mao during the famine, even if they actually try to fix something you only need to fool them. Truth is, reason authoritarianism doesn't work isn't because dictators are inherently evil or unethical, it's because the system breeds deception and corruption no matter how ethical the dictator might be.

Primo kept to his word, he fixed what he could, reinforced a lot of systems, decentralized everything, and got the hell out. Honestly. Looking and how he acted and his reasoning, he was probably a good person, and a competent leader. He probably would've been the perfect president for the time... But he wasn't a president. He was a dictator, and corruption found a way in, as it always does. Shit gets real however when Primo goes. Being corrupt under Primo was a death sentence. He got shit straight when he could. But Primo was a fucking MONARCHIST, so while he decentraliced most things he then gave extraordinary powers to the king. And made that king a Borbon. If there's one thing Spain's history books make apparent, is NEVER TRUST THE BORBON. Those french fucks brought us nothing good.

So after Primo the kings were happy to actively breed that corruption as much as they could and try to puppet everything through backdoor shit in lieu of the centralization they craved. It was a mess. And it got bad, and it got people angry. And then the Borbon died without descendants, and a Savoy (Italian king) took charge. That guy took one look around, saw how much everything sucked, proclaimed the country was "ungovernable", and promptly declared the birth of the second spanish republic as he fled back home. Which ironically makes him THE most competent monarch we've had since the Hasburgs took over. I mean, he was right, Spain was a fucking mess at the time.

But hey we have yet to get to where this turns rotten for the right wing this just seems like general crappitude! Well don't worry, WE'RE THERE! You see. When the first spanish republic happened, the old corrupt bastards positioned themselves in the right, while the left was mostly taken over by people with somendegree of principles (taking into account one of the major parties were ANARCHO COMUNISTS (FNT/FAI, the catalonian left wing) and the PCE was regular Comunists (who wanted spain to become a second soviet untion) those principles weren't always GOOD. But at least they BELIEVED in something), now, the right also had a lot of principled people, but it also had a lot of rotten eggs. And at this point the Falange, led by junior Primo de Rivera, the son of the prior dictator not the dictator himself, was a putrid mess of awful.

Now, this is only partially bad but, you'd think the decentralization would keep corruption from creeping in again, as there's too many parties fighting for power... well kinda but not really. The left was fine. More radical in certain areas but generally good. But the right, well.

At first the right got a few good apples controling certain areas, but they had an issue, they lost, a lot. They were too nationalist, too fragmented, they won on some areas but lost the government every damned time. And then the Falange birthed their solution. Primo de Rivera junior anounced he had a new way to fix this, the CEDAs, CEDAs stands for "spanish coalition of autonomous rights", it was a single major party to keep all the small rights under its wing. Promising to maintain their beloved decentralization and their power independent while giving them guvernmental support so they don't have to keep up wigh the left wing mess. And the fact I just mentioned the Falange was fucking rotten should make you mash X as to their intentions to keep their word there. They sure as shit didn't! They immediately started taking control and absorbing all the right wing parties through underhanded fascist shit, including political murders. Sure as shit finally the CEDA, being the only right wing party left after their hostile takeover and fighting against an extremely divided left wing got to power, and they IMMEDIATELY starting dismantling, selling, corrupting and fucking up everything, then buffing the army and taking out all non-loyal army generals they could, causing national riots and messing fucking everything up. Welcome to corruption hell.

And the very next ellection the left, seeing the mess, managed to make a coalition to fight them under the PSOE, and the CEDAs promptly funded and launched a military takeover. That's where the civil war comes in! The civil war was a fucking mess. It was also hilarious. The right wing "nationalists" recieved aid and funding by England, Portugal, Italy, Germany and practically everyone else. Yes btw this was after Hitler and Musolinni took over. Why the fuck the democracies and specially England would help them? No joke, before the spanish civil war, the stupid ass "makes the trains run" meme had worked and the english secret service thought fascism would be an invaluable tool in the fight against stalin, and since the spanish left had a small minorities of commies on it they thought they'd take the soviet side... Yeah that makes WW2 fucking hilarious. Doesn't it? Meanwhile the left at first only got aid by Uncle Joe himself, who promptly tried to take over from within and puppet spain. Hilariously enough he actually practically succeeded in that by the time England and France finally realized "oh yeah that hitler fella was actually dangerous" and decided to stop refusing spain's calls for aid. No joke, the brits literally ferried franco during the early war, their logistical support was VITAL to allow fascism to rise. Fucking hilarious. So, point is, this is why the republican side wound up crumbling into a ton of different sides as foreign secret services torn their already messed up ideology and there was nothing to keep them together in that mess, and also with the FNT/FAI droping the commie part, and using anarchism to go full corrupt before the others tried to take them down, then exiling themselves and turning to the right wing, as I described on my catalonia rant which is long enough on its own, while the nationalists were kept well fed and happy, and Franco managed to take over through Falange and Ceda contacts and kept the Carlists loyal mostly by fooling them with short term bouties and inutilizing them with corrupt maneuvers.

And so the war ended. And what was left of the spanish left wing fled, and worked tirelessly as exile troops, partisans and support personnel for the allies. Because as I said us spaniards pay our debts, even if they are to people that stabbed us in the back. And the right under franco was left with a leader that owed everyone favors, had driven the front purely by the preestablished corruption and even worse was Franco, the single most incompetent, spineless and unethical of the fascists dictators. A guy that makes you wonder how he managed to figure out how to breathe on his own and why didn't he backstab his mother from inside her womb. Shit got ultrareal.

And so during franco's regime we went back to 1st republic levels of EVERYTHING IS CORRUPT, I mean even Xi over here looks like a bloody saint compared with El Generalisimo, Caudillo of Spain, hell, he couldn't even decide if he wanted spain to become a republic again or go back to being a monarchy until his deathbed. The right on these times had literally no principles. Meanwhile left wing spaniards kept exiling themselves and working tirelessly against fascism on the outside, forming cells on the inside, or just being caged and killed. Our roads are literally still stuffed with their bodies as they were used as mass graves and the right wing still doesn't allow the families to search for their dead for proper burial, and Petain had concentration camps for spaniards that were on par with the Germans'.

So then franco died, and called in the monarch. Now, following the line came Juan Borbon, but franco didn't like him so instead he called for his son, Juan Carlos I of Spain. Who is still alive but is not the monarch because everyone hates him so he dropped the mess on his son, more on that later. And thing is, this is where we go to how our corruption survived democracy.

You see, JCI owed favors to 2 groups when he came in, the first was the net of corrupt fascists, the second was the previously mentioned catalonian turncoats of FNT/FAI who courted him in france. And so he declared democracy again, with 3 things of note: 1-everyone is welcome back, but some are more welcome than others, by which I mean republicans got the shaft while catalonians got priviledges. 2-Fraga, the ex-minister of franco, would be allowed to make a party known as Popular Alianze with the express purpose and message to go back to the dictstorship if they went back to power. 3- while the PSOE was reformed they were under new leadership... leadership that was quite friendly with the king and AP.

There was another extra however, MASSIVE ELECTORAL FRAUD, the first ellections AP lost massively, the very next ellections suddently everything was a lot more shady, had a lot more closed doors, and there was a lot more incidents of, for instance, people popping up with bags filled with votes with no apparent origin, voting dead people, etc. Both for the Popular Party and PSOE, these incidents slowly diminished with time as external pressure made spain reform for obvious reasons but specially the first decade of democracy was a democracy in name only.

Wait. How did the Popular Party get into this? You might ask if you're still readin. Well you see after getting their asses handed to them by even the PCE (which at this time was stalinist) Popular Aliance decided to reprand to the Popular Party and directly abandon their message of fascism altogether as they realized if they tried to fix the ellections while preaching fascism spain was getting nuked.

And while the electoral fraud has gone down, the corruption is a constant, take into account that Podemos is the only party with real, open primaries, everyone else has no internal checks and balances, and so the PSOE has a rotten fucking leadership on part with the american Democrats (our Clinton equivalent is called Susana Diaz, and she is as controling, evil and corrupt), but their base is still somewhat non-corrupt as they have to control the left, which really doesn't want corruption after how that turns out for the spanish left every fucking time, meanwhile however the PP is very much so still the corrupt, mafia style mess franco left behind. Their computers get destroyed whenever Europe notices their mess, and every time they are in power certain people get really rich. Last time Rajoy literally erased our anti-monopoly laws and let the non-public media fall into a monopoly by A3Media. And there's not a single president or minister of the PP which hasn't been convicted or is currently being investigated for corruption, that should tell you how far they've gone. Further, the catalonian tripartito, led by a right wing party, keeps generating more corruption with them and the monarchy, which thanks to Urdangarin was discovered and got JCI into immense trouble as his shady deals were brought to light, you can see how that would turn the spanish right wing into a fucking mess. And then as Spain finally moves away from Bipartidism, the left got Podemos, who is the only party doing things decently (note: DECENTLY. I disagree with them on many things. But you know... They're a party that has no corruption case so far despite extreme investigation by everyone else, they hold primaries, they try to protect the free market and fight against corruption... Honestly our standards are so low that's enough for me at this point. I'm just asking for human beings to be in charge for once.) Meanwhile the right first used a Gayop called Ciudadanos to try and sabotage the left (they claimed to be center and willing to negotiate with the left but were discovered to all be PP ex-members and actively try to push PODEMOS out. Yeah they were blatant. Which is why they only lasted 1 election) and now have spawned Vox, who claims to be birthed because the PP isn't fascistic enough for their taste (I'm not kidding), but as I mentioned so far they're only the PP's yappy neutered chihuahua, who's only purpose seems to be to slander Podemos all the fucking time for every fucking thing. No joke that's all they talk about. And so, that's the current spanish political system.

So with that in mind you might ask: "ok but what gave them the idea that this was a good thing to do?", let me answer with a question: "do you think even they can tell at this point?" It could be anything really, at this point they're a fucking book case on how to loose control of your life. Do you think the right wing controls the right wing at this point? It's a fucking escherian nightmare web of corruption and shady deals at this point, there's no party left here just a fucking mess, I doubt ANYONE has ANY idea what the fuck they're doing in that fucking mess of a party. Oh and btw: You think YOUR political caste is crazy? Bitch please. THIS is what crazy looks like!

What's risky about it? If you're young and healthy, your chances of dying from this are like 1/10,000. Only a tiny fraction of that demographic will require hospitalization.

And I'm absolutely floored that Sweden and the UK of all places are apparently taking a sensible, pragmatic approach to this.

Staying in lockdown mode for 2 years until a possible vaccine is developed, produced, and deployed, really isn't feasible. Places like Korea and Taiwan which have reduced the reproduction rate to below replacement levels with face masks, good hygiene and border checks might be able to pull this off, but it's too late for America and Europe where the virus is widespread.

UK gov's response to this has been retarded from day one. The best way to attempt to initially contain a novel infection is to quarantine known infected, trace contacts and quarantine those as well. Given the information that was available at the time, this is what the government should have been doing around mid january. They didn't even try. They ignored it. They continued to ignore until the beginning of this month, and then panicked into measures that will be utterly ineffectual in their stated goal. Herd immunity is not something that can be created by allowing a disease to spread at a reduced but otherwise uncontrolled rate within a population: what you induce in that circumstance is an endemic infection that periodically explodes to epidemic levels, much as the black plague used to do, or that any of the big diseases used to do prior to the implementation of widespread vaccination.

They aren't unique in this, I suppose, but the belief that you can "flatten the curve" by "delaying" infection is bullshit. Flattening the growth of a pandemic requires either early intervention to isolate known cases and their contacts or, in the case that this isn't adequate, invasive quarantine measures against infected population clusters, coupled with intensive sterlisation and decontamination measures in areas where infection has been recorded. What we're getting is vague half-measures, inedequate information and the begginings of mushroom treatment - kept in the dark and fed shit for the duration.
