i'm no communist or socialist but read my post right above yours for some irony https://kiwifarms.net/threads/wuhan-coronavirus-megathread.65421/page-853#post-6158634

their minds will change soon once the places they live start shutting down like all the people in seattle panicking right now who didn't see this coming from the start. turns out economies/governments set up around maximizing corporate profit and extracting every ounce of coomsoom from its populous so that even your middle class live paycheck to paycheck, aren't the best for handling contingency for unexpected country-wide or global scale pandemic/disaster situations. the obvious solution to something like this would be to halt your country's industry without fucking over the people & making them all homeless for a month or two so the disease blows over and people don't spread it, then life can go on as normal. capitalism isn't capable of that, if people can't go to work it falls apart within seconds. if people keep going to work, we all get infected. we'll probably be dealing with the long term impacts of this economically for a very long time because our systems and citizens can't handle being put on pause for 1-2 mos.

i'm going to sound like that bad math twitter bloomberg advertising money meme, but the amount of money we've injected into the crashing stock market the last few days is roughly about the same as two months of rent/mortgage forgivement without interest would have cost. i personally ascribe to modern monetary theory and i think it will be interesting to see if the power of "money printer go whrrrrr" is strong enough to keep america's current economic system afloat over the next few months.

Don't respond to the attention whore, please. If she gets any attention she'll keep shitting up the thread.

Get a rice cooker, God damn. Also Dutch oven bread is impossible to fuck up. Mix up flour, yeast, water into something vaguely dough like, let rise overnight then chuck it into a preheated Dutch oven and bake for like 20 minutes.

Everything is going on lock down here. Some remote communities are closing themselves off as a preventative measure.

Kyiv locks down metro, closes intercity communication, asks for no more than 10 people per bus/trolleybus/tram.

I'll still have to go to the office tomorrow, the boss will probably send us away.

At least I have the best plague to ward in the whole Ukraine.

It's been nice knowing you Kiwis. Please keep me in your shitposting thoughts, at least for a while

Ummm? Wow! That’s just... wow! See while “Herd Immunity” is technically a valid option, and one that is going to naturally occur, telling people that’s the option you are going with as a matter of national policy would seem to be an incredibly stupid thing to do. Because if you guess wrong on your national health care systems ability to absorb the load while the herd develops immunity, you end up as Italy or Iran. That’s what “do nothing and let it work it’s way out naturally” looks like. And they’re in the more southern warmer climates, where it will work itself out naturally sooner. Whereas the Netherlands are fucked.

Really? I've found if I dont do that I end up with rice porridge instead of loose grains. I am usually cooking with basic long grain or basmati though
You have to wash all the starch off. Keep washing it until the water is clear, then two-to-one water to rice, bring to the boil and then simmer under a lid until the water is all but gone gone. Remove from the heat, replace the lid with a towel to let it steam for a little while. After a minute or so, turn it over with a large fork. If it's worked right, you get a lovely, fluffy rice. Wrong and you get a ricecake. Such is life.

How long can local and federal government keep this up I wonder. Trump says august at the SOONEST. I'd say longer then that, how much food and water does fema have stored to feed 300million of us? How long before we refugees wondering the country like we did during the dust bowl? How long before people start leaving the cities and heading out into my neck of the woods looking for safety?

While I'm not totally opposed to food stamps and what-not because it is necessary at times, most of them use SNAP to buy a bunch of stupid shit that will not make a meal. Frozen pizza, TV dinners, bologna, basically stuff that's easy and convenient. Plus snack foods. SNAP benefits go a hell of a lot further when one uses them for staple foods. Get some rice and beans, some soup mix, make a big pot of beans and season it how you like and you could probably eat that for two or three days. Instead of getting a Digiorno's pizza and some Pringles. That's subsistence food to me, anyway, shit like that. Sure you'll get bored of it and you won't have a great varied diet, but it'll get you through and give you enough sustenance and energy to go about doing what needs done. But a lot of them trade away their credit for crack or buy straight junk and they're the ones who will very likely be fucked in the next four days or so and they'll be the ones yelling: "Hey we need mo money fo dem programz."

And they're probably the ones currently bitching because their kids can't get a free breakfast and lunch when schools are shut down. When one uses SNAP/food stamps responsibly and actually puts some effort into meal planning and learning how to fucking cook and work with what you have, you'll pretty much never have to go hungry. Of course that's also true when you're trying to make your grocery money go a bit further too.

But people are fucking morons. If there's one thing that's come out of all of this so far for me, it's that people are fuckin' DUMB.

That's what the left doesn't understand. If you don't work for it, it has less meaning and you don't care how you use it.

When I worked in healthcare, the amount of people who would come into the ER with Medicaid for stupid shit like STD checks and common colds was mind-numbingly infuriating. These people knew they could just find a doctor who accepted it, but since that required effort on their end, who gave a fuck.

SNAP recipients should have to turn in receipts with their purchases. Run the receipts through an algorithm that looks for stupid shit and then have an actual human follow up on the stupid shit. But since that would be trans-racist or whatever, I'm sure that'll never happen.

https://nypost.com/2020/03/16/soccer-coach-dies-from-coronavirus-at-age-21/

A 21-year-old Spanish soccer coach was killed by the coronavirus while also battling leukemia, according to a report.

Francisco Garcia, a youth team coach at Malaga club Atletico Portada Alta, only received his cancer diagnosis after going to the hospital with symptoms of the virus, the Independent reported.

The coach had been advised to seek medical help after he began experiencing trouble breathing, Spanish newspaper Malaga Hoy reported.

Garcia was told that not only did he have both coronavirus and pneumonia, but he was also suffering from leukemia, according to the Independent.

Pep Bueno, who the club president of Atletico Portada Alta, where Garcia had previously trained, said he received a call from the hospital Sunday that Garcia was in stable condition.

But within an hour, he was informed that his health had greatly deteriorated, according to the report.

“I do not believe it. It seems impossible to me,” Bueno said, according to the Independent.

Garcia is the youngest person to die from the virus in Malaga, where the four other deaths were all patients over the age of 70, the outlet reported.

Health officials have said the majority of COVID-19 casualties across the world have been among people who are older or have underlying health conditions.

Hmmmm?

Now what do you supposed the most important part of that story is? The part that probably should have been mentioned in the obscenely sensationalist headline?

@No_one already posted the basic numbers for me. We didn't get the number of tested samples this time, which is annoying. I don't even have much to add, feeling tired, didn't even go outside to look at things. After a slower day we're getting back on the expected growth curve, I guess. According to projections we should be getting close to 200 new cases over the next two days, doubling the current number.

Since I'm such a bore today, I'll at least drop a handy table comparing the epidemic spread in several countries:

Why did Italy get hammered so hard in particular? It doesn't strike me as a major travel nexus or anything

Or just Fuse SNAP and WIC. You only get to buy certain things with it. You want to be under daddy Government's wallet? Well Daddy Government gets to tell you what to buy.

Because they were too busy talking about how racist it is to avoid Chinks than trying to keep the virus under check.

It's because Italy imports chunks to work in sweatshops making designer crap. "Made in Italy" looks better. They were probably the ones to bring the bat soup cough here, tbh.

It’s probably the worlds biggest tourist destination. And they opted to ignore it and let it hit full strength and swamp their healthcare system.

Nah, it's only fifth. France and Spain are both bigger tourism destinations.

The most important part is this:

"Garcia was told that not only did he have both coronavirus and pneumonia, but he was also suffering from leukemia "

This fucker got raped HARD. How shit would it be at 21 to not only get coronachan but also get told you have cancer you didnt know you had and that you will likely die as a result?

Poor guy....

I just read that people are doing runs on guns and ammo now. Time to haul out the old rifle I guess. If someone come looting my damn house for toilet paper and frozen pizza, they are going to get shot in the nuts.

My circle has been counting the amount of times our left leaning colleagues ask for firearms. So far today we've had 5 between three of us. It's the same people that cheered Beto on about "banning assault weapons! Get them off my streets!" That are now terrified. Ya can't always count on the government to keep the peace, this is one of many scenarios that could happen so you got to do it yourself according to our school of thought. We've had this conversation a few times today:
(formerly anti-gun) sanctimonious coworker: "Hey, so you have guns, can you loan me one until this whole thing blows over? I just want like a glock or a M16"

"Huh? Ooh shucks, turns out that could be a felony if I did it without transferring it through a dealer. Plus you have to pay them, so maybe like $30 bucks, then you'd have to pay to transfer it back to me afterwards, so there's that. Then you'd have to go through the background check which is super backlogged, so you'd have it in maybe a month?"

"NO! I need one now! It's scary out here and the wife said she doesn't feel safe in our neighborhood"

"Well that there is the ol' gun show loophole you wanted closed, remember? Enjoy! You're now super safe."

It's better to just send people to the store and have them work it through themselves, if at all. Panic buying usually doesn't lead to super responsible ownership, and while we try to bring them into the fold and do the full safety briefing, it's tough when they don't really have any interest. It's just there to hide in their closet and make them feel safe, even if it sits in the wrapper.

Our Schools are failures, Absolute Failures.

I learned to cook from Good Eats, no really..Alton Brown taught me to cook when my school didn't.
This.

The lack of life skills taught in today's schools is utterly horrifying. The fact that schools are more focused on teaching seven different kinds of math that most kids will never, ever use, and not how to feed themselves, how to do their taxes, or write a resume is appalling, and I wish that when politicians talked about education reform, they meant shit like this.

Of course, if this was brought up, schools would just say that it would fall on the shoulders of the parents to teach kids stuff like that. They're not necessarily wrong, but when most parents are too busy working sometimes multiple jobs just to keep their heads above the water since wages haven't kept up with the cost of living, they unfortunately don't really have the time to do such.

It sucks, but it's how things are nowadays.

Anyways, my point is that if kids are going to stuck in school for eight hours a day, they should at least be learning something useful, and not the useless bullshit their being taught now.
