That requires effort and thinking, why read subs or buy/support foreign media when you can just swallow Hollywood schlock made for the lowest common denominator.
This is why, in my opinion, Asians(who are not Americans) are not that bitchy and whiny about "representation", they have decent media that portrays their culture and ethnicity so why should they care.
I grew up watching diverse media from different cultures so I never thought about "why der too many whytee on movie??" or muh ethnicity is not being represented waah.

1) Literally yes. I know people who won't watch any film with subtitles. Parasite just won Best Picture, and these people won't see it because reading is hard.

2) It's not about getting what they want; it's also about taking away what others have. It's not enough to have women empowerment films; they also have to take away any action films deemed "too macho." They can't just create a separate female-led James Bond movie, they have to convert James Bond himself and strip the character of everything that makes him James Bond.

They don't want to watch movies, they want to be mad.

It literally took Bong Joon Ho to basically tell the world to get the fuck over it because reading isn't hard.

Most native English speakers who like to watch movies aren't really movie fans, they're Hollywood fans.
Even the so-called movie critics in English speaking countries don't ever venture outside of Hollywood, they don't even watch indie US movies made outside of the LA studio system.
The only foreign thing they watch is anime.

If your eyes are focused on subtitles they're not focused on any other part of the film. If you do not understand the language being spoken, you inevitably lose nuance in the performance.

It's not as simple as "lol just read". A film in a language you don't understand is inherently an inferior experience. Now sometimes the film is so good that it's still worth watching. But it's never the same.

If they absolutely *must* remake Great Mouse Detective, Disney would literally be better off keeping all (or at least most) of Price's original dialogue in it, and making it fit in with the new version cast and dialogue. (That would still be sacrilegious AF, and terrible... but it's the least bad, but still really bad, option they have if they actually want to make a "live action" version of Great Mouse Detective.

There's plenty of people who can't understand English and still watch American movies with subtitles (or sometimes dubbed in their own language). That's more or less the standard in most non-English countries. Americans have no excuse other than laziness.

This. Film may be super popular and a fun hobby, especially for entertainment and story-telling purposes, but very few people actually appreciate film as more than just an art form. There's even film students who can't appreciate it, they go in thinking it's one thing/all fun and games, but then they're being bombarded with all sorts of information that they can't process, and they realize they just only really care about watching movies to pass the time, not learning about how it's made step-by-step. Hollywood is full of shit and shit people, but the filmmakers themselves are actually passionate about their profession to the point that they'll literally die for it.

It's probably no wonder why DVD commentaries and special features tend to sadly go unnoticed. They're only made for the few future filmmakers who want to know how the magicians worked their magic on their favorite movie. It's actually surprising that movies are so universally accepted that film fans have never been mocked for being the nerds they really are like every other geek back before it was cool to be a nerd.

The only foreign thing they watch is anime.

That still falls apart because only the weebiest of weebs watch subs 110% of the time. There's anime fans out there who won't watch a show subbed, so they put up with bad dubbing (although some of it's funny) just so they won't have to read. Which I get, animation really should be watched and soaked in through the eyes and not having to rely on glancing down to read subs while potentially risking missing out on some background details. But reading subs while paying attention to what's going on is a skill that unfortunately not a lot of people are capable of doing or even have the patience to learn.
