That is actually a good point. Nobody was shouting "racism" when China was rightfully getting dunked on about the whole Hong Kong protests, but say that the Chinese virus comes from China and suddenly that is where the line is drawn, even though both events share the same common factor of the CCP doing whatever they feel like with complete disregard for other nations.

Even Trump's stance on both is similar: supports Hong Kong and denounces the CCP for the virus' mishandling, so, against China for both, so I have no idea why him being against China for one was OK and never decried, but doing the same for the other is racist. At worst, him calling it "Chinese Virus" is not the best of priorities on his part when he should be worrying about healthcare first and foremost, but still a far shot from a "racist attack against innocent Asian people".

People on the left see it as racist because it's a white guy initiating the criticism against China rather than it visibly being the Chinese doing so. You can go on social media and find Chinese people, like even the Americanized variety like Kathy Zhu, who would complain it was terrible for anyone to criticize eating bats or other rodents that may have caused the virus to begin with. The Chinese people saw all this criticism of Chinese life of eating rodents as an affront to their dignity and kept talking about how great their country was handling the disease, so you don't have Chinese people really backing the story of how China fucked up the way at least some were back with the Hong Kong protests.

A google search doesn't turn up anything from the Daily Show talking about the bat soup eating suspected to have caused the virus.

Then you have outlets like Rawstory acting like it's ludicrous to talk about the bat soup. I doubt any major leftwing news outlets or late night shows talked about what caused the virus, so it also wouldn't be surprising if they didn't talk of how badly China fucked up with their publicity stunts to pretend they were doing anything about the virus either. In comparison, back with the Hong Kong protests people had South Park talking about how bad China was, so it was easier to label China the villain.

Without the approval of celebrities or TV shows those people on the left don't have as much reason to be annoyed with China for causing it and will think it's weird to call it a Chinese virus.

Edit: Probably should add I don't follow these late night shows so mostly guessing based on google searches whether they've talked about some of the bat soup issues.

I miss the days of irreverent comedy. MadTV and the old SNL would be eviscerating the Chinese and making bat soup a household meme. I could imagine Ms. Swan muttering "Dis looka like-a bat soup! No no no no." Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood alone would never exist in today's culture.

So-called "irreverent" comedy has pretty much always been targeted at the Republican side of the aisle, though. Go back to the very first episode of SNL and you will see jokes made about how Ford is an incompetent coward that could be ripped right out of a W or Trump joke. The only difference is that they allowed some token Democrat jabs tossed in there as well, such as Norm ripping into the Clintons on his segment alongside other non-PC jokes. They also had some light-hearted jabs at Obama during his first 100 days - the teleprompter skit and the "he's done nothing in 100 days" skits. It's only become extremely obvious since that point because Obama's approval rating then tanked so hard he reached 'not going to be re-elected' levels and they had to run full damage control 100% of the time just to keep him hovering around 50%. Now they can't stop carrying water for the DNC because it's gotten so lazy and out of touch that if they don't, the American people would immediately despise everyone in it.

Also, the reason why they would have eviscerated the Chinese is because the lefty stance used to be "Russia good, China bad", but has now swapped to "Russia bad, China good".

tl;dr - go back to that golden era you remember and actually watch it. You'll see it's just as full of the Democrat talking points then as it is now, they just threw in some token opposition to make it look more balanced, while now they've taken the stance that any deviation from the accepted viewpoint anywhere is evil and makes you evil. South Park seems to be the only holdout that even makes a token effort, and that's probably because their bread and butter is to be controversial.
