Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Hantavirus doesn't generally spread human-to-human, it's from eating rat shit. In the states, when we have an outbreak, it's usually traced back to a pantry where dry food stocks were being sampled by local rats. These viruses have some staying power, partially because of where rats shit. You can exterminate an entire colony only for another to come in a couple weeks later, eat the desiccated corpses and become carriers themselves.

The most likely explanation is everyone on that bus ate from the same rice. If we hear it's spreading human to human, whatever this is probably is not a hantavirus. In fact, is it is transmissible, calling it a hantavirus would be a good PR move because those don't spread human-to-human. It might keep frightened people from getting more scared.

Yunnan Province is kind of the sticks. They have a lot of mining, the cities are not too-well developed, and the CCP doesn't play that much of a role in the daily lives of people. Would not surprise me to learn this was misidentified and is actually WuFlu of Bubonic Plague.
I've been to Yunnan 3 times, the cities are alright but the countrysides are straight out of Myanmar.

The home depot in my area now has armed sherrif deputy's only allowing 100 people in at a time and it's enforced. My general contractor has been waiting at the store since 6AM when they opened to get in the store for material. Won't pickup any illegal workers but they will shoot/arrest folks trying to buy nails if too many go in at once.

If this is a portent of things to come online ordering is going to sky rocket and you might as well make every building a giant drab gray concrete box as there's no reason to go inside any more. Also, there will be a run on armed security everywhere.

I can't wait for Kroger's to have bouncers with hand clickers at the door.

Won’t somebody think of the pangolin sellers? The true victims in all of this...

But for the moment, with only one case of COVID-19 detected in Gabon, bushmeat lovers are not discouraged.
"We'd been told about monkey, which would give Ebola, and yet we kept eating it and never got that," says Melanie.”

Holy. Shit.

Got my care package today. It's 2 kilos of rice, 1/8 of a pumpkin, and some okra. I'm not mad. I'm just disappointed. Jesus fucking christ the local officials here I swear to the chaos gods. I guess I'll have to go to the market tomorrow.

Wait, your local government is already distributing food?

Oh Lordy...

Note: catching up on over 90 pages of forum text.

It has been several days of driving in my region to give my report. It is a bit calmer right now but that is because of the stay in home notice. Food was actually plentiful. went to Walley World today and got everything that I wanted. Just a few minir things. TP is fully stacked. 91% rubbing alcohol I could buy 1 bottle, which is what I only needed as I have plenty of 70% rubbing alcohol.

FYI. Just in case you are running out of 70% rubbing Alcohol I dilute mine down to 50%. I leave it on the surfaces a lot longer for it to work, like a wet rag on a smooth surface... That is how wet you want it to be.

The math... 3 bottles of 70% rubbing Alcohol = 4 bottles of 50% deluded rubbing alcohol -or- set aside 10 oz of the 70% solution into another container and fill the first one with water. That was you can have both dilutions just in case.

Also in a 32 oz bottle 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract to 50% rubbing alcohol and now you have a foo foo air freshener that I use when I spray the kitchen/bathroom garbage cans.

Been doing this for years in different concentrations. Works for me and you save money in the process.

Driving on the freeways was like it was 25+ years ago. Hospital have tightened security now. The people that I did talk to were overall calm and polite.

So far so good however the calm depends on how much money people have on hand, how quickly the infection spreads, and the weather.

Wife is recovering. No O2 and is now slowly moving around and getting cranky, which is a good thing.

Boredom is another factor to keep in mind. Just to keep busy. I've been working on a Ad - hoc distiller for water. I'm going to be using house hold items. Things I can find at my place and see if it would work.I really do not believe I'll be using this (if successful but someone might have of need somewhere else and it is a great mental and dexterous exercise to create. Got to keep mentally active you know.

I'm also rebuilding my Dremel model 580-2 table saw. Just because it keeps me busy as well.

As state before because of the information given on this site I was able to plan out my supply usages. As long as people do not go sideways things are going to be fine. If things do go sideways and you have been listening to us then you will be FAR prepared than the majority of mankind it seems.

But right now where I stand it is not looking that bad at all. Yes people will get sick. but I believe the flattening process of the virus curve has already taken place in many parts of the country.

Unfortunately there are certain states with politicians that had their thumbs up their collective asses did not take any sort of precautions.

Sucks to be you in those states.

The virus can only do so much. It is the people that make things worse for the rest of us.

And Cuomo is sperging now. Yes the Feds have 20,000 vents, but CDC couldn't find them and now they need to be refurbished. And you're complaining they "only" sent 400 yesterday. Nigga, you can't just snap your fingers and make complex equipment magically appear. Do you want shit that works or not?

He's vacillating between shitting the bed today and then in the same sentence talking about how you can hook 2+ people up to one ventilator. If you can hook up multiple people to ventilators and repurpose existing anesthesia equipment, and you already have 5,000, have another 7,000 coming and are going to be getting more, and then doubling up on that, why the fuck should the Feds give NY the entire stockpile!

He's banking on not having multiple peaks at the same time, but the Left Coast is an open air sewer and doesn't have testing sorted out unlike NY, so no one knows whats really going on there. Will King Andrew take responsibility for deaths in CA because he took the very limited testing numbers at face value and then, oops sorry I didn't think it was gonna blow up at the same time! Of course not. But the Feds have to think about that.

Give me the fedora, idgaf but fucking A Cuomo you were doing so good :stress:

The elderly in my area are beyond stubborn so they didn't take the heads up to stock up (whether it's due to the virus or people's reactions). Now that there's community spreading in my area they're finally taking it more seriously and trying to get supplies when the shelves are mostly picked clean. It's sad to see but it's not like we didn't try to warn them.
That aside, people are still panic buying in my area. You can still get food but most of the staples are gone and there's still no TP/hand sanitizer (or potatoes :( ) to be seen.

China is just crafting their narrative. The infections never stopped. But now with 2 weeks of claiming no new ones they can claim the disease is being brought in by foreigners and it's all Americas fault.

Never mind the fact that virtually no Americans are traveling to China and haven't done so for over month.
I really hope this makes people stop saying "Look! China is dealing with this easily, so it clearly is a nothingburger and we should open up now!"

They clearly were lying, South Korea will probably end up getting a second wave of it soon, and basically this is still only going to get worse from here.

That is the one in Albany Georgia.

For you yanks reading this, the common pronunciation around those parts is Awl-binny.

Airline traffic is dropping by a noticeable amount at my location. My ADS-B setup is picking up about a third less aircraft per day. On that note, one of the flight trackers has opened up their data for public use:

Daily Updated COVID-19 Aviation Data Resources from AirNav Systems

The COVID-19 Pandemic has caused widespread disruption to air services, crippled airline operations and negatively impacted travel demand across the globe. For the past few weeks, AirNav Radarbox’s data services team has been crunching the numbers and compiling data on how this disruption is set to affect the industry and air travel at large. AirNav Radarbox is pleased to announce that this collated aviation data is being released for free. Entities and individuals are encouraged to use this data for studies and analysis, statistical models, news reports, infographics and informative videos etc. with due credit attributed to Radarbox.com. Sorry if ideas have already been thrown out but what's Pelosi's play with this bill? She knows there's no way in hell it's getting 60 votes. I originally thought it would boost what the republican bill had already suggested to push them more left (Bernie's suggested $2000 checks, more unemployment benefits/expanded student loan forgiveness, etc) but it's full of unrelated shit.
If her goal was to boost benefits/public perception she would have stripped down the republican bill to everything that explicitly benefited workers and dared the Republicans to vote against it but this is basically the opposite.

I left the house for the first time in 19 days to drop a new cat off at the vet's for desperately-needed dental surgery. They now strictly limit how many clients can come inside the building, and under what circumstances, so I handed the cat off to the receptionist in the parking lot while maintaining social distance, and she filled out the surgery paperwork and noted my consent so I didn't have to sign anything. This afternoon, before I go pick him up, I'll call them and pay by giving my credit card number over the phone.

I called them last week, told them I'd more than likely been infected, and we agreed to a couple of additional sanitary precautions (spraying down the cat carrier with the veterinary disinfectant I use, leaving it outside to air-dry overnight, taking the cat outside to put him in the carrier, and either wearing gloves or using a clean towel to handle the carrier). I'm a frequent flyer there, so I think they felt confident in my ability to actually take those measures; I'm not sure what they would have done with a typical client.

They aren't taking new clients or scheduling regular check-up exams right now; if you need prescriptions filled or to purchase special diets, you have to call in the order for pick-up and they bring it out to you. And if you do schedule an appointment for a sick cat, only one of the owners is allowed to be present.

I drove by a Costco on the way home, and the lot was already half-full at 8:00 AM, even though they don't open until 10:00. But the two safeways and the grocery outlet store only had a handful of cars in each lot. What the fuck is the obsession with Costco? They're out of stock on so much stuff right now; why even bother?

The most interesting thing about this mess is how its revealed how little work local state governments actually want to do (and thus be held responsible for). Its almost like they forgot this is a FEDERAL system of government. Blumpf cannot just allocate all his attention to your one corner of the country. Part of the tradeoff for the existence of your cushy elected position that allows you pad your doners and your own bank accounts with State level appropriations is that when shit hits the fan, you are in charge. Not the US president.

The number of governors and mayors shrieking how it's not their fault or responsibility is pretty sickening. It may not necessarily be your "fault", in as much as its nobodies "fault". But it IS your responsibility.

Bunch of peace time officers shitting their pants at the first sound of an artillery shell whooshing overhead

So, yesterday US deaths hit 140 a day and global deaths hit 1873 a day.
These numbers are significant because daily flu deaths in the US are around 128 a day, and global flu deaths are around an estimated 1781 a day. So, if you're comparing apples to apples, in the space of just over 3 weeks since the first US COVID-19 death, it's beating a virus that came over on the Mayflower on a day to day basis, and beating the same possibly 2000+ year old Flu on the global stage despite being in the early days of the outbreak, with the peak likely still weeks away at the earliest.
Also, those global daily figures were worked out at the upper estimate for global flu deaths of around 650,000. The lower estimate of 296,000 a year would work out at 811 a day, which we passed some time ago.

I'm actually increasingly confident the measures being taken will stop the outbreak from spiralling into a complete catastrophe, but we have to actually stick with them for a time for them to work.
