It's all down to how much the US federal Stasi want to focus on you. People have caught plenty of felonies for harmless prank calls, even prank calls to people who don't deserve it.
I understand these people tend to use a lot of those stupid phone 'burner apps'. A very bad decision, as most of those get the IMEI from your phone if not more information. That can then be tied to your customer details, if you're so dumb as to use them on your main phone on a plan, or at least to the details used for top ups if it's a pre-pay plan. You're also likely to be leaking location information from the cellular network connection alone.
Many of them are also on Telegram, which will leak your phone number to contacts (including antifa infiltators and feds) if you aren't careful.. and that's assuming that Telegram doesn't cooperate with the FBI and Mossad behind the scenes. Using things tied to a phone number associated with your location is dumb.
Obviously, avoid doing stuff like that.
