Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

This is ANNECDOTAL EVIDENCE. Emperical evidence still point to the VAST MAJORITY of deaths in people 60+ years old, with people under 50 making up a tiny portion, and under 40 non existent unless multiple pre existing pathogens are present.

Especially in america, where testing is pathetic, hospitals are only seeing the most severe cases. That is going to cloud the judgement of people stressed out working 12 hours a day getting constant conflicting information about a disease nobody seems toknwo the true extent, infectiousness, ece of. Hysteria is the word we're looking for.

Nobody ever said younger people were immune, but its like how people go "ZOMG ALL YOUNG CHILDREN GONNA DIE" because a SINGLE baby has died. One baby. More babies will die in 60 seconds of violence then the number of babies coronavirus will kill in total.

Gentle reminder: the 2009 swine flu killed over half a million people, the majority were int he 30-50 age group. We survived. Do you remember the whole world shuttind down over that? Me either. We will be fine.

Yes, the original peddler of the half million dead revised his tally twice, down to 20,000, then down to 5000, Competing biologists have also criticized his original study, and calling out the media for hysteria peddling. The question is, why didn't the media and the governments go crazy when SARS hit? There would have been one crazy biologist out there who would probably say millions would die. Why didn't all the media outlets listen to the crazy guy then?

A healthy 48 year old NYC nursing manager died of the virus recently. See, I am skeptical about the low kill stats now. I wasn't before but I am beginning to wonder. The rate they're dying is rather quick too, usually other flu's kill an elderly person (for example) after a three week battle and they succumb from secondary complications. Covid-19 has people dropping seemingly like flies. I don't know what to say.

I've heard the virus has a measles-like tendency to ''linger'' behind in the air. Not as infectious as Measles but holy fuck, is that scary to think.
I remember reading an article about Italy that said doctors and nurses were experiencing higher mortality than the general population. There could be more to it too, but I imagine working while sick under a high stress situation contributes to it greatly. I really can't even begin to imagine what they're going through, we're going to lose so many healthcare workers.

Even though it was harder to get information from there, back when this was mostly in China there were quite a few young doctors and nurses dying.

(This isn't me saying "oh it's only young doctors and nurses getting it this bad, the rest of us don't have to worry", but it does seem like medical workers are having poorer outcomes for some reason)

Take care of yourself Kiwis, try your best to not let depression or anxiety fuck with you, lest you become like this faggot.

Does FAT count as a comorbidity tho?

In that picture, Herr Schäfer does not look particularly healthy. Maybe it is the black and white picture but something about him looks very off, for a man of 54. He was operating on top of the German social ladder.

Fat in and of itself is not a comorbidity. However when people start really packing on the pounds, from what I've read, you get fat between your organs and around your heart and on your ovaries and all kinds of crazy shit. And if you are really obese, your heart has to work harder to pump your blood. It can interfere with your breathing if your insides and outsides are so fat that you can't completely inhale or exhale. And it becomes painful to move around as you age (just a little bit) so to avoid pain, you become more sedentary and your problems can escalate. Obesity has a common comorbidity: diabetes. Diabetes, if not properly managed, weakens your body on a cellular level. Kidney problems can also follow diabetes.

I am not talking about people who are carrying a few extra pounds. That has its risks, but the real issue is the folks who get into their car, and the vehicle tilts toward the driver's side.

Are you deliberately being sensationalist or are you genuine, I can't tell.

Every source I can see says the "healthy" nurse had severe asthma.

Remember, all journalists are lazy lying shit weasels. They've gone from downplaying to stirring up shit. But take everything with a massive pinch of salt .

Having said all that. I'm worried too. My tinfoil hat theory is that there are different strains with different fatalities. And that China spread this shit deliberately once they realised they'd shot themselves in the foot. Take the world down so they didn't lose any relative position.
The Italian experience can be wished away with various cope stories. But Spain?
We'll have to just sit here and wait.

New Yorkers are tarded.
Absolutely.
I used to think it was a toss up between the sandniggers or chinks as to who was the most exceptional but jfc at least the sandniggers don't eat their cats and dogs or endangered critters like pangolins. Chinks, worse than the hajis. Good Lord this is the world we live in.
edited because I forgot to post my agreement my fellow NYers are huge idiots

I've kind of been thinking this too. Symptoms and their intensities are all over the place even within the same demographics.

This crisis is giving me a passionate hatred of New York that I don't think will ever recover.

This absolute shitstain Cuomo enacted cuts that caused many hospitals to shut down, and now that there's a crisis he has the fucking gall to try and hoard all of the country's ventilators and encourage his street rat constituents to flee out of the state. Fuck this piece of shit, I hope he dies. New York doesn't give a shit about anyone except itself.

Well, we crossed 30k, with a few days in march to spare. Any predictions for April? Will it peak or get worse?

Put me down for the prediction of a peak this coming week, followed by a reliable 'cheaper'(mass-producable + mass-administratable) treatment, followed by case numbers rocketing up as the treatment allows the world to partially open back up and manage with significantly higher numbers due to the new treatment. Ultimately, by the end of April I expect millions who are stuck with a week or two of bed rest and meds, with a total mortality count per day not much worse than today despite the higher numbers. After that, a true peak in may or early june as group immunity starts to kick in.

Perhaps I'm optimistic, but I just don't want to deal with a lockdown for the next decade or two. We need a solution that allows us to get sick if we ever want to open ourselves up again. Things seem to be getting closer to that.

I'm not stirring the pot, I'm just ruminating. I really don't know anymore. I knew someone who died of the flu too - she was asthmatic and developed pneumonia at just 21. I was also shaken by her death for years, but her death was not so swift. She passed after a month of having the virus leading to pneumonia. This poor guy went downhill rapidly.

This is clearly a much stronger virus. One that our genome is not familiar with.

Thing is, huzzah and all for them sticking it to THE CORPORATE MAN forcing them to work, but...

Today it's Dominoes, no big deal. Tomorrow it's all take out. Next week it's a grocery store or Walmart where all employees refuse to work.

What happens when you live in a small town where Walmart drove out all the mom and pops 20 years ago and they and the 2 convenience storea close? How do you get food?

Excellent source. Excellent bcs. transparent & clear.

Article about "perfectly healthy" middle aged Texas man, dying.

A couple of things to keep in mind ... as far as who is on the front lines right now .... who is behind the demographic that runs cash registers, hooks up IV lines, changes bed linen, drives busses, delivers food? ... Here is a hint: they are not under the age of 16, or generally over the age of 70.

My own personal theory: the over 75 crowd is highly aware that they are over 75. So we are seeing the first wave of illness and death. So they are probably quarantining themselves, as much as possible.

Some people between the ages 18 and 65 are not able to quarantine due to their jobs. Also, some of them live with housemates who want to get out on the weekend etc.

This virus IS killing healthy people, like it or not. Some people might be so healthy, that their immune system goes into overdrive and inflammation contributes to their demise, as their body fights this virus, killing itself in the process.

Article talks about how COVID kills you, or doesn't.

Also, elderly people and unhealthy younger people have constant inflammation problems. Barring trauma or accidents, when your body begins to wear out, it is due to cells not regenerating back to a youthful or healthy state. So when you are reaching for that Tylenol it is because you are in pain in part due to inflammatory response.

So all of this is very complex.

My personal theory, is that this will hit people like cashiers at grocery stores and Wal-Mart's, and taxi drivers and nurses etc. Then the sicker ones will die. Then another wave will come and take out a lot more elderly, being that the economy can not be on dry ice, indefinitely.

A nice confirmation of what you say. (archive)
"80 percent of all Dutch corona patients treated in intensive care are overweight. Diederik Gommers, chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care (NVIC), explains this on Friday Jinek.
According to Gommers and Peter van der Voort, head of intensive care at the UMCG, there is “apparently” a link between the overweight people and their problems with the coronavirus, although this cannot yet be said with certainty."

So much for the "healthy at every size" body positivity movement, I guess.

Did I say that "flyover states" (a term that I would NEVER use) are "backwards?"

My concern is that in some cases, rural and semi-rural communities might be even worse off, than coastal ones, because aid seems to come here first.

Also, different areas have different problems. While NYC and St. Louis and some parts of LA might be equipped to deal with gunshot, per capita, rural Kansas or Oklahoma or Texarcana might be more prepared to deal with complications of obesity, per capita.

And not all states are equally funded. Do they even have universal health care, and the systems to support it, in "small government" states?

I think that’s a pretty disingenuous concern when people on the coasts haven’t been worried about aid to rural communities as industry fled from those communities, leaving them to fend for themselves, and then often the advice is “move to a city where the jobs are” or “learn to code! lol”. Fun, slightly off-topic note on learning to code btw...want to know who’s even harder to find in tech than programmers? People who can speak to both technical and business people and concepts. That’s not as quippy and easy to throw at rural communities as advice though, plus it might actually be helpful.

There’s little concern for rural communities as they’ve been left to rot, while coastal people sit back and laugh and wonder why they don’t just move to the cities and be just like them. Meanwhile, we have Cuomo trying to grab up all the ventilators cause fuck those rural communities who might have fewer systems to support it...remind me how much coastal people care about us in the middle of the country again?

Of course like others have said, it seems clear at this point that only moderate to severe cases are getting recorded. Whatever the reasons why NYC and LA are getting hit harder right now, there are tens of thousands if not millions of cases circulating around the US right now and most of them are not dropping dead or needing hospitalization. Most of the hospitalizations are happening in those coastal cities though not here in the Midwest, so again, maybe worry about that instead of feigning concern about communities that continue to chug along and fend for themselves, even in a crisis, after they’ve been shit on again and again by coastal cities and policies written by politicians from those cities.

Just wait until the Midwest cuts off their food supply due to infection concerns...we can dream right?

Don't judge. People end their lives if they perceive that can not continue living for some reason or another. Brain sees the end, the hand acts based on what the brain dictates.

It is not for us to decide the fate of another, once s/he has determined that their life is over.

Please, withhold judgment.
Suicide by train is on the same level as suicide by cop. It's cowardly and shit-tier and forces other people to live with having taken your life. I'll grant you that this is Germany and you probably need a license to even unlock a window in a tall building -- but even still, this asshole should have used his tie or bought a fucking frisbee or something.
