Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

At this moment, there are supposedly twice as many people infected in the US than there are in China.

I call bullshit. I don't need to explain the immeasurable amount of health hazards found within China, so how is a country like America, with a first world tier response effort, in a supposedly worse situation?

Fuck china, fuck the WHO dogs
Right now the answer is 'because Drumpf' and somewhat more reasonably, 'because an authoritarian country like China is capable of taking drastic actions to halt the spread that the US/most western countries would never be able to'. I think they're padding their numbers massively but we'll likely never know for sure by how much.

simply put I'm the autopsy assistant; path lab/epidemiology dept.

we take samples, run tests and do diagnostic work on anyone died who needs a CoD.

I started out in a different capacity but have been doing more over time in this department. End goal is medical examiner's office.

We aren't actually as heavily exposed as people are who are doing bronchiscopy, intubation, and personal care for the sick. Our patients aren't breathing or coughing at us, the only fluid exposure we have is if we do any cranial inspection (bone saws make micro spray). We're a lot less at risk.

I was only exposed because some fucking idiot decided to eat lunch or something upstairs where there's live, infected people and then come waltzing around the path lab without a mask on. morons. the living are morons.

so my exposure was actually an infected colleague, not a patient or a body. I'm not on the real front lines. I'm the rear guard.
we won't be doing anything but lung specimens after this though- when I get back tomorrow the protocol now is to do a slide of lung, mucus membrane, eye, and liver. nothing more. so it'll be assembly line from here on out.

the state is on lockdown so we should hit our peak this week or next, then hopefully it slows down before we get to the cordwood-stack stage of this.

edited to add: we were pressured, covertly, to under report. we are not doing that.

First of all good luck and hope you get better.

Secondly. This is why our data on how we are tacking this and taking action is pretty much spot on. We have all walks of life here on this forum. People who have the knowledge on what is going on here and/or something similar that they have done in the past. Or giving data on how to track as well as the what pace the virus is spreading.

This is why many of us were prepared way in advanced before the governments could not hide the fact on how infectious this illness truly is.

My update is a follows. I did my usual run in a wide region of places and call up people that I know that are in other areas. I can say for now that the stay in place order has had several benefits plus stores limiting what you can the amount you can pick up on items.

The local Wally worlds do have almost everything Before the mass panic a few weeks ago and so does many of the local grocery stores. Driving is still light. The hospitals that I visited were done in the morning and was rather light in all accounts though security has been beefed up. Have not been hassled by the cops yet as it seems they are taking a low profile approach on this.

Testing in a town/city nearby is 1 in 4 that has the virus.

I am thinking that it is starting to sink in on how bad this virus is to some people.

Don't be scared. In your case it might "just" be a sore throat. Keep in contact with someone you know IRL and check in with them twice a day. Check your temperature and call 911 if you have trouble breathing or feel like you need urgent medical attention. Actually, just like any other day. Call your GP or a nurse's hotline.
Agreed We are still in the cold flu season in many parts of the world. Also Add allergies to the mix as many are heading into spring like conditions.

Still pretty new to it. Tbh I am a bit of a medical mystery atm. They think it's related to the ulcerative colitis I developed after a year of MREs in Iraq. But not sure. I did apparently set a hospital record for highest concentration of inflammation cells ever tapped from a joint though. A rather dubious distinction. They've even brought students in to observe. That is when you know you are fucked. You're case is "interesting".
Anything that comes under the umbrella of Irritable Bowl Syndrome ( a shit load of digestive disorders, diseases) is a silent killer due to the fact of the embarrassment of the whole situation. Tens of millions of people have it in the US alone and depending on the severity ( from having acute nauseous symptoms, to losing parts of your digestive tract, to wearing a clean out bag for the rest of your life, to death. It is a fucking miserable set of illnesses that takes not only your way of life, but your sense of being as you can not do all the things you want to do for the rest of your life.

Man good luck on your situation.

The common agreed theory behind the Spain and Italy numbers are due to lack of testing/ sample size compared to relative population. So the Wu-Flu lingered around probably a lot longer than anyone suspected, so now the spread is too much for anyone to really handle. Kill rate of it is probably anywhere between 0.6%-1% as I initially theorized before. Testing is everything in this regard, now that better testing methods exist, hopefully we can curve things off better and identify the more critical areas. So the whole FUCKING planet doesn't have to stay in lock down, so we can all go back to our jobs and lives.

Our lives have forever been changed. I expect that the Wuflu will now be a seasonal thing. It may not be a deadly as not but it will always be here.

You can thank Emperor Whinnie the Poo for this glorious gift to mankind.

For everyone freaking out about this, please remember that for the vast majority of people, this virus runs it's course like a common flu and you end up being just as fine afterwards. Lots of people don't even have any symptoms and basically every specialist on the matter says right now that there's likely a huge number of unknown cases that'll likely always stay unknown because it bothered them so little and passed with as little as a sniffle if anything. It's very easy to think this is captain trips from the media and the death numbers, and it is serious and bad but even if you catch it, you're very, very, very likely to survive. There are a lot more dangerous things you are also likely to catch. You're mostly afraid of the unknown right now and that's understandable, but remember that this shall pass. Also don't listen to the doomers either that tell you that having the clothing store down the street closed for a week or three is basically the end of civilized society. I remember "experts" over here in germany speaking about apocalyptic recession numbers in the double digits, now they're down to a bit lower than the global recession at the end of the 00s. A lot of people with power and money are also taking advantage of the fear right now for their own purposes to reshuffle the deck. Never forget that.

Apparently freaking out has a heavy cost. Sorry to rain on your parade, but Hungarian parliament has given their current Prime Minister Viktor Orban absolute power.

No, it is not just a flu. Yes it maims and kills. Yes it will cause massive economic damage. But given the predictable death toll, why install a dictator? Why, why?

Hungary is a landlocked central-eastern-European country with a few delightful neighbors: Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Croatia.

Not concerned about Austria.

Some of you are literally too young to remember. However for those of us who came of age in the 90's and before, this could be the beginning of a massive reversal of much of the post-Soviet democratization that the region fought so hard for.

What I mean, is that a lot of folks remember the wall coming down, like it was yesterday. And the aftermath. And with that comes people who remember life on both sides of the "iron curtain" and the costs and priveleges of being free.

Not to downplay the Coronavirus, but the virus really does have its limits, unlike dictators.

Sorry for the mini-lecture

Charlie Kirk has a ton of dumb takes in general but this is especially stupid. And I'm speaking from the perspective of a Catholic, an actual person of faith, btw.
  • It sucks that people can't go to church, but it's just not safe. I feel like God would very much understand the present circumstances and wouldn't want people recklessly endangering themselves in His name.
  • There are already way too many dumbfucks, especially megachurches, who are making Christians look bad and recklessly endangering their parishes by flaunting social distancing rules. Nobody should be having large gatherings now, churches are not exempt from this rule. Faith will not protect you from a virus.
  • Lmfao at this dude thinking that we can do "socially distanced" Easter. Has he ever been to an Easter service? That's when all of the twice a year Christians come out of the woodwork and the churches get fucking packed. At my church (which is pretty large) there are several Easter services spaced an hour apart and we still have to use the school's gym as a makeshift church to fit everyone. And even then it's still jam-packed in both the main church and the gym. Social distancing is simply impossible, even for regular church services.
  • I know some places are offering streaming of church services, which while it isn't as effective as the real deal is still a good solution. Obviously there are parts you miss out on (like the Eucharist in Catholic Mass) but it's still worth it. Also, I heard that my pastor is doing one-on-one meetings with people who want Reconciliation or other sacraments. I'm sure other priests and pastors are offering their own services on a one-on-one basis too.
  • Also I'd love to see a potential lolsuit go to court. What makes him think churches are exempt from social distancing orders?

Texas quarantine lunacy

There's no way this survives any court looking at it. Cops have lost countless drug busts coming out of Colorado because the courts keep telling them that coming from a specific state isn't grounds to stop someone. Even if that passes, these people haven't broken any law, so good luck making them do jack all without illegally detaining them. Forcing people to ID is kosher for the driver, mixed laws/cases for other passengers in a car. Definitely cannot enter people's homes for "spot checks" without cause.

Who does he intend to sue? The Trump administration?

Originally I thought Turning Points was hell-bent on taking the wrong side on every issue because that's what their neo-con donors wanted and thought the zoomers just hadn't heard the sales pitch yet.
Just so you know, Charlie Kirk was a Never-Trumper until 2017... so part of me thinks his real goal here is to rile up enough Boomers into going to church (or some alternative mass gathering) and inadvertently get a bunch of them killed. At this point, what does he hope to achieve in politics if all he wants from the government is suicidal grandstanding? Tax cuts? He'll get that with Joe Biden given his income bracket

In politics, there's a lot of money to be made in being a good loser.

China is trying to gaslight the entire world. Guess what? A lot of other nations are starting to realize of not only what China has done ... But also what it continues to do. Over this past weekend, I've seen several pieces of European news saying that China does not only have a dictatorship, but it also has unethical practices in its culture (this was a response from the UK media when it was discovered that wet shops are making a comeback in China). I've also seen Australian news proclaim that "we should never forget what China has done."

I think that China selling useless medical supplies to other nations in attempt to profit from the pandemic has been the final straw, too. Spain is royally fucked because it found out the hard way that the tests that China sold to them were very inaccurate, for example.

Hell, even the American news media is showing signs of starting to sing a different tune about China. Even VICE (VICE, you guys!) is essentially calling China out on its bullshit:

This is what bugs me most about a lot of these ultra-religious types, the megachurch, big bucks crowd specifically: they'll preach this and that and the other all day, but only from a church. The concept of "a church is not a building" is anathema to them. If you can't get everyone together, how will you hit them up for money? You can't do service through an internet stream, how will you get the money!?!?

Why does God need a starship middleman?

Yeah, China isn't satisfied just stepping on it with golf shoes on. Now it has to disco dance on it with golf shoes on. The more China tries to make itself out as the good guys, the worse they look, in front of the whole world.

And selling useless/dangerous medical supplies to other countries? I thought Xi was smarter than this.

The more I see of this, the more terrified the Chinese leadership. A year ago today many considered China a great-power-to-be. Now, we see China's a house of cards, or maybe an Oz, with Xi frantically pulling levers behind the curtain. Not saying China's going to collapse, but don't believe anyone will take China seriously or trust them any time soon.

Keep it up, Xi. You are turning your country into the world's pariah.

Don't know if this been posted, but here's an article about the shit China foisted off on the Dutch. Has already been archived.

Hey careful now. You are arguing with well known facts posted on media websites world wide. Despite the numbers changing every hour who are we to say those numbers are bullshit?

Remember if you question one fact here you are totally inconsiderate to feeling sympathy for those who are sick and die. If you actually were in New York recently and did not just read a bunch of bullshit articles and question that more then a hand select group of hospitals are swamped with covid-19 patients and the rest are mostly clear you are just trying to be jerk.

I am totally not being sarcastic. Why would I be? Me sarcastic? I am never sarcastic. There is only one point of view to argue from the liberal stance. Forget the problem of joblessness and economic downfall. Forget the problem of other horrible viruses that get seemingly no attention despite killing millions and millions and millions over the last decade. Forget that possibly regular flu patients are now somehow testing positive for coronavirus. Forget that a lot of people online make up that they are in the health industry saving lives to get attention online. Forget that calling and researching 95% of the hospitals in the country would prove most places have no coronavirus patients. Forget that the normal flu kills as many people if not many many many more. Forget that even despite all this people are saying "hey dying of a disease in a hospital with a respirator sucks and people should do everything they can to prevent such a thing." Forget that South Korea seemingly did specific isolations with mostly good results and eventually did a full lockdown anyway to comply with broader government speculations. Forget that its total bullshit that 20 million people would have this by the end of May and comparing this to Spanish Flu is incompetent because its nowhere near as contagious or deadly. Forget that there is a vaccine and experimental or not it does exist.

Forget all of that. Only one thing matters. That you care about one person who died from this. And the world should stop completely and starve if necessary to show compassion for those who died. That is the liberal stance. That you are an asshole to disagree. Especially forget the fact the this type of thing happens yearly in Africa and no one gave a shit last year and next year no one will give a shit. Truly only the most selfish people in this world will relate to caring about any other issues then healing those hurt by this. Despite HIV killing 70 million people in history and Ebola ravaging Africa and swine flu ravaging China and no one blinking over that if you lack a single piece of total willingness to be as selfless as the Buddha himself over one person getting sick and dying of this virus and not seeing a single reason to consider one possible other piece of evidence in the spectrum of how it is if only slightly possible that this disease kills those already old or with pre existing conditions and that there could in any way shape or form be any way to try and be more specific in the cause of isolation because people are losing jobs and money and the government seemingly has the $2 trillion solution that we know from friends who are actually not rich and not loaded with cash that don't have 3 retirements saved that are confirming how hard getting unemployment is right now and how unlikely getting a government check in the mail will be and what assholes big Fed are to take $2 trillion hard earned tax dollars from hard workers to simply blow on the rich you are a serious asshole.

And despite me sounding sarcastic I actually want to believe that this is the right thing to do. I want to believe I am not being sarcastic and that anyone who disagrees with this is willing to go right now to lay down their life as a volunteer nurse and not just sound like a know it all asshole. People deserve good health. It is often their fault they do not care for their health. But still, people deserve not to be sick. Not to suffer. Not to die. And we should all live our lives trying to help these people as selflessly as we can.

And if I can believe that every person who argues this point of view will give a fuck next year and did last year and had this same mentality and aren't just making up that they are so caring and helpful in these trying times and truly believe deep in their core we should live a certain way until all sick and dying people are removed from the planet then I will shut the fuck up and mean every single thing I say and never be sarcastic ever again. Amen.

Oh careful now. You are thinking in more then just one color in the spectrum. Don't be selfish.

I mean I had to say it. Maybe you aren't being selfish. I just wanted to point out: people are sick and dying. Should we not all sacrifice everything we have?

Or am I just being the flat earth type?

This is what bugs me most about a lot of these ultra-religious types, the megachurch, big bucks crowd specifically: they'll preach this and that and the other all day, but only from a church. Why does God need a starship middleman?

Seriously. I understand there's a strong community aspect to church, but it's not like you need a church to worship God. You can still pray on your own in your home, and like I said a lot of churches are offering streaming of services. This is all just a temporary measure, it's not like you can never go to church again.

I can't help but feel like some people just want to go to church so they can show off how pious they are. Praying publicly is the not the only- or even the best- way to pray. If only Jesus said something about tha- oh wait.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."

Remember the outrage when Trump suggested PPE was going "out the back door"?
The NY Post reports a man was arrested for hoarding a huge cache of PPE. A doctor reported to investigators the suspected hoarder possessed enough medical supplies “to outfit an entire hospital.” He allegedly sold a NJ doctor 1000 masks for $12,000-a markup of roughly 700 percent.
He coofed on the FBI in an attempt to, I don't know, make things worse for himself.
The article implies these are the supplies of PPE that went missing at NY hospitals. I mean, it's not like nothing ever fell off the back of a truck in New York City, right?
