Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I think he's likely right about patient zero. That does seem suspicious that all of her info has been deleted, and no one knows where she is.

The facility she worked at is attached to the hospital that saw the initial patients. Chances are she was one of the first to be treated and among the first to die. The CCP goons probably walked off with her charts.

And he hasn't even wanted to do that. People will ignore it anyway.

DeSantis is really a shitty governor, but as we all know, many Floridians are also shitty.

Boomer enclaves like The Villages are going to be ravaged by corona. Oh well.
Also there's probably not the same solutions needed for The Villages as needed for Yeehaw Junction given the massive differences in population demographics and density.

Florida's governor has announced a "stay at home order" statewide at Midnight tonight. Which basically means "don't go out unless you, like, really want to".
I bet your beaches are going to be packed this weekend.

I read through LA county's latest update this morning and apparently, perhaps due to panicking early, we've still got plenty of hospital beds. See attachment. (Source: https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/CALACOUNTY/2020/03/31/file_attachments/1416028/COVID-19 Update_03.31.20.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2KzSucPZMgid-FL5XBbgBOQ4Iu-_mBz2DnU-iPpUqruYsQ9GtGttc9xpQ )

But my friend-who-is-married-to-a-local-nurse says his hospital is full and there's extra beds in the hallways. So either extra beds still count as normal in times of crisis or there's some kind of a communication issue.

Here's a Google translation of a DW.com article in Chinese on Huang Yanling and the Wuhan Institute. It also has this mention of a disappeared paper

https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.dw.com/zh/%E9%9B%B6%E5%8F%B7%E6%82%A3%E8%80%85%E4%B8%8E%E6%96%B0%E6%BA%90%E5%A4%B4-%E8%B0%A3%E8%A8%80%E4%B8%AD%E8%AE%BA%E6%96%87%E9%81%AD%E5%88%A0/a-52402284

At the same time, the incident of a paper being deleted has also attracted the attention of netizens.

Xiao Botao, a professor at the School of Biological Sciences and Engineering of South China University of Technology, recently published a report entitled "Source Possibility of New Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)" on the scientific paper sharing website Research Gate.

According to the summary on the website, the report was suspicious of the claim that the seafood market was the source of the virus, citing a municipal report and testimony from 31 residents and 28 tourists that bats were never a source of food in Wuhan and there were no bat trades in the market. The content then points to the Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which may be 280 meters from the seafood market.

According to the report summary, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has captured 155 bats in Hubei Province and 450 in Zhejiang Province for experimental purposes. It also mentions that the researcher responsible for collecting bats mentioned in national newspapers and websites in 2017 and 2019 that he had been attacked by bats, during which the blood of the bats was sprayed on his skin. Knowing the extreme danger of infection, he quarantined himself for 14 days. In another accident, bats pissed on him, allowing him to isolate himself again.

Based on this evidence, researchers worry that bat tissue samples and contaminated trash in the center may be the source of the pathogen, leaked to the surrounding area, and infected the first patients. However, the paper was deleted shortly after it was published, and it is no longer available on scientific paper sharing sites. But the cover and abstract of this paper can still be found on the Internet.

tl;dr - a Chinese researcher got a paper published saying the Wuhan Institute of Virology was the likely source of the outbreak. The paper then got promptly unpublished.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists thinks the jury is still out on whether the virus escaped from a lab and mentions the disappearance of the Xiao Botao paper and points out that 'Thus far, no scientists have confirmed or refuted the paper’s findings'. It seems to me that science works by having people publish their research and then if it turns out to be bullshit both it and the papers shredding it stay up. It doesn't work by having papers get nuked by a government that has a clear interest in covering up mistakes by its labs which is what happened here.

Whether a lab accident could have led to the COVID-19 outbreak remains unclear, but making that determination is worthwhile, [Professor Richard ] Ebright [Ebright of Rutgers University’s Waksman Institute of Microbiology ] says: “Understanding the origin of the outbreak is a crucial step to reduce the risk of future outbreaks.”

Meanwhile, in Turkmenistan: Mentioning the word "coronavirus" is grounds for immediate arrest. For those not in the know, their leader is a massive lolcow.

In the section of "no fucking shit", US Intelligence is accusing China of severely downplaying the virus. Anyone following this since January could've told you that.

Seems to be the first and only country trying to fight the virus by denying it exists.

Also sucks to be on a cruise: US Coast Guard told aall ships to stay away, and try to offload people in their legal home port. So if you are still on one as a passenger or worker you ain't going home, even if not sick aand even if a US citizen.

The new rules require daily updates on each ship’s coronavirus caseload for vessels in U.S. waters, and come with a stiff warning: Any foreign-flagged vessels “that loiter beyond U.S. territorial seas” should try first to medically evacuate the very sick to those countries instead.
Many of South Florida’s cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas, where hospital capacity is limited and people are still recovering from last year’s Hurricane Dorian.

Hahah, this is amazing. Bolsonaro is continuing to behave like the puppet of the banksters that he is. He's continuing to just a flu post, with Facebook removing several of his posts for attempting to mislead the Brazilian people.

Bolsonaro has defined a wide range of services as essential, including call centers involved in telemarketing, and has suspended the rights of workers in these nonessential essentials to strike.

EDIT: Some food for thought
Gregory Cochran said:
One general factor that partially explains our ineffective approach to Wuflu is that too many people in key jobs affecting our response – the press, the medical research establishment, politicians, advisors – aren’t all that smart.

We could draft all the particle physicists (for the duration) . True, most would not have a lot of specialized domain knowledge: it might take two or three weeks before they were better at their new jobs than typical CDC or WHO employees.

The cruise ship situation is definitely a day reckoning. Both for the dumb boomers who got on those boats after what happened to the Diamond Princess, and for the cruise line operators themselves.

It's well known that these ships usually Flag to some third world shit hole like the Seychelles or Liberia. They do this so they can avoid everything from taxes, to workplace safety and pay regulations. There is one teensy weensy issue with doing this though. In the event of a crisis, the ship is ultimately the responsibility of the country to which it is Flagged. Had they chosen to fly the Stars and Stripes rather then whatever the fuck Uganda is flying this month, they could not be denied entry to an American port. Hell, the navy may even be required to dispatch warships to assist.

But they dont fly the stars and stripes so those ships can be legally told to go to their home port. Which is in Africa. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Looks like Dems are concerned about this taking a bite out of their voter base

One of the problems with this virus is that it's happening right now.

People expect instant, real time data about everything. We don't report this way for any other source of mortality, health systems are trying to cope and there's these crazy people demanding up to the minute information from every corner of the 50 states.

Most reports about mortality are a gauge, they are only so accurate and meant to explain trends. The fact no one is standing up to this request and saying it's bogus is a shame.

At the very least get a Panamanian registered ship for cruise ships. It’s still bad but it’s better than Liberia.

Night news roundup! Ain't got official numbers but everyone's saying the curve has stabilized which means yesterday was indeed statistical noise and we've hit infection peak on the densest areas. Puerta del Mar got its first recovery and didn't clap due to superstition as the first recovered patient died home that very same day and they claped. Asked what was going on fearing fake positives. He sliped and broke his neck. Fucking kek.

ISCIII fully sequences Corona-chan's sexy, sexy genome. Which is an achievement in sheer scientific capacity. But also completely worthless on the healthcare front. So yay for the bragging rights...

NYT claims spain is the 2nd country in tests per million people. I would call bullshit due to how hard they are to get but the clinical trials are syphoning that shit like crazy (you need repeated testing over time for a clinical trial to see progress) so they might be right. And I am incredibly salty about that... Look I'm a biotech student I love the scientific effort but maybe testing our medical professionals is more important, just saying. Priorities!

Turkey sends NATO aid. What the actual fuck is going on with the world I don't know. We also got another package by boat on seville, dunno where from they didn't specify so I know it's probably european or south american. (A3 media only tells nationality if its chink shit or african. And yes turkey counts as africa.) So whoever it is, thank you, I'm saddened our retarded journos won't pay proper respect to our real allies.

Here in cadiz nothing new under the sun and no news is good news. We are starting to notice than if things keep like this once quarantine ends we might get hit by an outbreak due to too little inmunes, so... Either way. The planet will break before the guard does. But I sure hope that's unfounded fear, 'cause our directives are morons and the rest of spain has been giving us nothing but the cold shoulder since the quarantine started.

The PP is going for a full kamikaze campaign against sanchez and Podemos as their prior rhetoric fails. And much like the Dems in burgerland this has only lost them a lot of credibility. Specially when they asked for harsher measures and they're now blocking them with nothing but insults and excuses. That's just no way to stand in power in a democracy. Vox went full retard yesterday but I still think they'll overtake the right in the next ellections, if only because at least they've stayed consistent within their brand of crazy and done better than expected. But we'll see.

You'd think it would be a real boon to the DNC, I mean dead people already vote for them overwhelmingly. More dead people = more Democrat straight ticket voters.

Absolutely horrifying. Not only are Chinamen being insulted over the supposed origin of the coronavirus, but people are questioning the group behavior of Jews.

One man angry at the behaviour of the Lakewood, NJ colony of Yehudis in America has been arrested over joking threats to go there to enforce social distancing rules with a baseball bat, and has been charged with terroristic threats.

Another man, a public safety worker who similarly condemned the refusal of the colony to comply with public health measures is likely going to be fired and may face prosecution under New York's anti-free speech laws.
