Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

We're definitely coming up with a plan to re-donate to orgs like food banks and homeless shelters, but the PR point is an awesome one and one that I'll definitely bring up as we are still trying to figure that part out. Thank you!

This youtuber posted a few days ago about a mask-maker forum where the mask-makers can be connected to groups that will use them within their specific state / area.

Ohio has updated its numbers for today. They are still struggling to get any number of tests out. 2900 confirmed cases, over 800 of which are hospitalized. Still no widespread public testing, and the only word on the new antibody testing is that it will be used in a limited capacity to test already known negative cases to see if they had it before.

I dont understand, DeWine has done a good job on almost everything else, but he keeps dropping the ball on testing. If the 100,000 possible cases was true, and the R0 is still around 4, that would leave nearly 2 million people in the state infected, and weve found a whopping 2900 of them. He went on about how he is going to help mobilize manufacturing in the state to get PPE made in larger quantities, but no word on testing.

He's getting pissed about businesses and people ignoring the shelter orders, but still cant show us where the infections are. At some point this is going to boil over.

Yup, the numbers we've been getting from Columbus really don't seem very accurate to me. Additionally I don't believe for a second that there's one county in the state of Ohio excluded. We just don't know for sure yet. This shit is most definitely everywhere and the number's we're seeing are incredibly optimistic. I appreciate the state government's prompt response to all of this, I think they've done far better than most other state governments. But trusting people and businesses to have good judgment? Bullshit, we already know that they don't. Walmart has been packed at all fucking open hours in my little po-dunk town, my neighbors are basically having the equivalent of a god damned block party every day because all the kids are out of school and unsupervised. Traffic really hasn't fallen off at all either, which isn't a big problem if people are just driving around, but we know they aren't, they're going fucking somewhere.

And trusting these businesses to come up with and enforce limitations on how many people can be inside at once? Yeah, like that'll fucking happen. They may close entrances or limit ingress, but they're not going to turn people away, no fuckin' way. People in my town basically treat Walmart the way other people treat a coffee shop. It's the local gathering place because nobody has anything better to do apparently. Bring the whole family! They're still doing that, just as they always have.

Either Dewine has far, far too much faith in Ohioans, or he's just scared of taking decisive [and likely unpopular with the morons who make up most of our populace] action because it might fuck with his image. Personally I think it's a combination.

Honestly I give Garcetti (LA Mayor) a C-.

At the end of the day, he supported the LA Marathon proceeding as planned when that was an obvious tard move. And while the LA area hasn't completely fallen to shit,
A) much of that is county-level
B) Garcetti is really taking advantage of this time to appear on TV every day to quote Cesar Chavez at us and other dumb shit.

Newsom gets a B. Seems to have swallowed some Orange Man Bad pride here and helped to keep things safer in the state than I was imagining would happen in February.

Nobody gets higher than a B in this crisis. There's just too much obvious shit they all fucked up.

Policy leaders have been warned for the last 30 years it was inevitable for a novel pandemic to hit. It was just a question of when, not if. Nothing was truly done to prepare. Nobody really has a frame reference for it. Everyone who was around for the last big pandemic are long gone but for a few centenarians who were small children at the time. The entire problem was an academic one, and that does not earn votes.

That said, the lack of preparedness is precisely why it was imperative for China and the WHO to be forthcoming about what was happening. It would have given the world time to isolate travel to china and begin ramping up production of PPE, testing kits and equipment. China knew back in December that there was airborne community spread of this shit. Early January if we are being charitable. Had they sounded the alarm instead of lying to everyone we would not be having to do all of this on the fly as the pandemic explodes exponentially. We would have had at least 3 to 5 months to prepare. In that context, its not all that surprising it seems policy makers are flailing about. Because they are.

I know its been said so many times, but when we are on the other side of this there had better be severe repercussions for China and the WHO.

The governor of Guam has given aid to the USS Roosevelt. Apparently, they are able to quarantine cases in a hotel on shore. Sorry, I don't know how to archive video.

My honest recommendation is go all in on it if you can. Become a single contact point for the mask users thing suggested by @remiem. Heck, even work on publicising it and thank everyone for their efforts and turn it into a local community thing if you can. Folks clearly want to help however they can. You can come out well ahead while also helping people.

Complete win.

Almost definitely not. I work in a healthcare-adjacent field, the CEO of the county's local healthcare services system called our big boss yesterday asking for advice dealing with the homemade mask issue - a ton of people are donating them, but they can't use them without leaving themselves open to liability. Can't turn them away or let the public know they can't use them for PR reasons either, so they're "piling up in a corner".
This is why, when the first calls went out to make masks, I didn't even bother, having worked for animal welfare groups who were occasionally the recipients of unusable/unsuitable "feel-good" project donations. I made a couple for myself to avoid potential conflicts over the issue while out in public, and that's it.

Dispersing them through local charities who assist homeless, low-income, and other vulnerable individuals might be the best option; food banks, soup kitchens, groups that serve seniors, such as Meals on Wheels, etc.
I have a friend who posted this gem on Facebook:
"Ok, so in China, you get censored for having the wrong opinion. In America, people talk over you. Seriously: What's the difference?"

This person is deadass serious. Yes, he also suffers from a massive case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Who was that redneck comedian from back in the '90s (back when there was a whole mess of redneck comedians on the scene all at once) who used to say, "You can't fix stupid?" Because I just heard his voice in my head as I read that.

And my mother-in-law, bless her heart, also suffers from TDS. She's REEEing about Trump not accepting testing kits from the WHO CHO, even though there is ample information out there about how the testing kits (and other medical supplies) sent from China have been faulty and/or contaminated with COVID-19.
Funny, but my TDS-infected mother and siblings haven't uttered a single word about Orange Man Bad since the beginning of March. Not. One. Word.

And when I talked to my mom a couple of days ago, she didn't try telling me all about something Rachel Maddow had said, for the first time since Trump got elected.

This is huge. I have honestly expected them to be frothing at the mouth about Trump each time I've talked to them recently, but I'm getting zilch, zero, nada.

I send my mom small batches of YouTube links every few days that I think she might find amusing or interesting (because she's 80, and can't be bothered with the internet, but she'll click on a link if I email her one). I've had to be incredibly selective about which coronavirus-related links I've sent, and have only sent her one in each batch, because if I send too many she'll feel like I'm pushing them on her, get annoyed and not click at all.

So I think she's been watching them, and actually thinking about them, and--fingers crossed--maybe she's noticed the discrepancies between the facts, and what comes out of Rachel Maddow's mouth ( :optimistic: ). I almost want to ask her about it, but it feels premature, so I'll let her bring it up first.

One thing that's bothering me. Apparently the UK lockdown rules also include "No unnecessary journeys" . I.e. no going for a drive into the country to go for a walk. I guess they are trying to limit geographic spread, but this seems ridiculous . Makes me wonder what's really going on. It just doesn't feel real at the moment. Mixture of draconian lockdown, and casual half arsed measures.
I suspect part of the reasoning behind that is to cut down on the number of road accidents, the victims of whom might require emergency medical treatment at a time when medical resources are stretched thin, or might be at breaking point. That's my guess, at any rate.

The population density is almost 10 times higher than Wuhan.

The density figure for Wuhan is a bit misleading. In contrast to American cities, whose limits are often not far from the downtown area and are often surrounded by suburbs that are administrated as separate cities, Chinese cities often encompass large swaths of the surrounding countryside. The most extreme example is Chongqing, which covers an area the size of South Carolina.

The city of Wuhan covers 3300 sq mi, but only 590 sq mi of that is urbanized area. The urbanized area contains 9 million of the city's total population of 11 million. This works out to about half as dense as NYC proper (but three times as dense as the total New York urbanized area).

TLDR: Wuhan is a giant Jacksonville.

That's pretty much it, but there's still some confusion over messaging on the matter. Derbyshire plod pushed this message during its disastrous drone video.

This is likely to smooth out as the guys who gave Boris his big General Election Victory got drafted back in to focus messaging and unify it. Which is why the "Stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives" turned from the hideous red/white/blue to the yellow/black warning label we're seeing published everywhere now.

Honestly though, there's a lot of countryside that'd make a lot of sense for people to go for a walk if they'd just space out. The issue is too many folks don't have "other places" to go chill and socialise like they normally would.

New York City is 468.484 sq mi of urban area containing over 8 million people.
That's not "half as dense as NYC proper".

*Here defined as the City of Detroit, and Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties. State prisoners are not counted towards any region's cases, but are kept in a category of their own.

Also one Ann Arbor man allegedly killed by his roommate in a Corona-related dispute (archive). The suspect has been released from custody while the investigation continues (archive).

I hope the good people of Michigan realize the dangers of giving that complete idiot Whitlock unrestricted power for any length of time? She actually makes deBlasio look competent and skilled in an emergency.

Ezra Levant of Rebel Media covers the fact that Chinese government researchers have linked the Wuhan Institute of Virology to the outbreak and makes the point that the coverup is very reminiscent of the USSR's coverup of Chernobyl and will hopefully cause the PRC to go the way of the USSR onto the ash-heap of history (archive).

Now I know Ezra's a bit of a grifter and Rebel Media is a fringe outlet but it's good to see the story getting a bit of coverage in the media. Interesting Tucker Carlson seems to have covered it too, which means Trump most definitely knows.

My take? This is to be expected in Latin America. Some of the countries are more civilized than others.

But then you have this shit happen

Money being wasted by a government.

Slight power level. I was investing money into bio fuel at the time certain counties were way ahead of the US using switch grass. There was a time in the early to mid 2000's where there opportunity for many Latin American Nations to advance. But because of the formation of B.R.I.C.S. in 2009/2010 I saw the writing on the wall and left that region entirely.

BRICS Stands for Brazil. Russia, India, China, South Africa.

IMHO that's when S.America started to become on shit hole. As BRICS has a real influence down there. Everything China and to a lesser extent Russia touches... dies...

In China if you express dissent against your rulers you might not be allowed on high speed trains. In the US if you do the same you might lose your livelihood and not be allowed to use AirBnB, Uber, Twitter, and Facebook. But you'll still be allowed to use Amtrak (for now). So yes, there clearly is a difference.
This one is not exactly your best. See me after class.
