Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

How does one measure the impact of the corona then? Why the quarantine at all?

I know these questions were asked a million times but if we don't need mass testing, then we don't need such draconian, restrictive measures.

The lockdowns are there to ensure the correct functioning of the healthcare system. SOME of the measures implemented in them are draconian and nonesensical and MOST of the measures should've only been applied to more affected areas, but the lockdown is necessary for certain areas. The issue is with the execution.

Testing is already done, and it is a sufficient measure. MASS testing is a measure to detect asymptomatics, which honestly don't really feature on the lockdowns at all. (They don't need healthcare, what measures the usefulness of the lockdown is the load on the system, not the number of infected.), it'd be nice for predictive models, but it's not needed.
Remember, Kiwis, no matter how badly you have suffered from this, you must always remember the plight of our African-American friends who have things 1488% harder because racism and shit.

The very first sentence tells you all you need to know about the direction this article is heading:

Very odd that they want the CDC to track this by race when liberals freak the fuck out whenever race is attributed to any other study (crime, IQ, HIV rates, etc).

Well obviously. They already have the data, they only want public the one that aids their narrative not the one they know hurts it.

There's something called antibody-dependent enhancement where having antibodies similar to the serotype of virus doesn't neutralize or kill it but actually causes it to bind to receptor cells. It's not well understood and there are various theories as to how it can happen but the fact some people can get infected, recover, get infected instead and then not only become sick again but very sick is scary. Here's a not very well written Wikipedia article about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibody-dependent_enhancement

That's why it's important to test vaccines before they get rolled out. IIRC one of the early SARS vaccine attempts had this problem.

Dengue is a good example of this, since it'll use your antibodies as a surfboard for viral entry if you get re-infected with a different serotype. Then here comes the cytokine storm.

Meanwhile, Georgia (the US state) just had its governor approve the first extension of the executive order telling people to shelter in place. The unlawful and perpetual house arrest in the civilized world has officially begun.

Yet you still have people clamouring for more Authoritarianism and any pointing out of the obvious unconstitutional measures gets you labeled as a "conspiracy theorist."

I think watching Cells at Work episode 3 Virus or the zombie apocalypse episode is a mandatory watching to at least get the gist of how viruses work. would be infinitely better when a doctor does a complimentary commentary

it may not be directly corona related, but at least get some of the ideas right instead of endlessly speculating on the wrong things.

Guardian reports in passing:

Police arrested a man on suspicion of theft after it was alleged that he stole a large number of face masks and other products from stores at north London ambulance sites and attempted to sell them online.

The man, in his 20s, was arrested on Wednesday, taken into police custody and bailed pending further enquiries to a date in late April.

He had been able to access the sites as he was a contractor working with London ambulance service. Officers recovered a number of items during their searches and these were returned to LAS.

DI Jason Colby, leading the investigation said:

I am saddened that anyone would take advantage of the NHS for their financial gain at such a critical time. These masks are a vital piece of PPE for emergency service personnel and are used to keep both themselves and patients safe.
We will continue to crack down on anyone attempting to take advantage of our emergency services for personal gain, especially at such an unprecedented time.
We are grateful to those who are assisting our investigation.

Scumbag. Stealing PPE from the fucking paramedics of all people. I hope he ‘resisted arrest’ a few times in the back of the pig wagon.

Pretty soon we're going to be seeing articles about how you can do YOUR part to fight coronavirus by eating bugs instead of meat.

Ah.... You jest but...

I don't eat meat and even I think that's a terrible idea. I hate it and would love it if people didn't eat animals, but people have liberties and freedoms.
They want a world were you don't have liberties and freedoms. They want North Korea - a world where you only get white rice on your birthday.

Whilst I wholly respect that, they should be talking more about possible treatments coz fucking rainbows they'll have a vaccine in 12-18 months. It'd be more like several years. By that time it will have infected most people. Tho they DO want us all on lockdown until a vaccine so...

The vaccine trial in the US seems fairly promising. Basically it's just injecting people with the SARS-nCoV-2 spike glycoprotein (which is fairly stable and does not mutate) so they make antibodies that can recognize it.

Should work.

Capitalism hits Chinaland!
A guy decided to smuggle 625 pieces of game cartridges! Among them was "Animal Crossing" which saw its value multiplied ($79.99 Abobucks, over $200 in China).
Zhuhai customs caught this guy. 6th of April, he bundled the games on his body and got intercepted.
Games include "Animal Crossing", "Zelda (presumably Breathe of the Wild, because the other ones suck dick", and "Pokemon Sword/Shield".

Thanks to Coronachan, Nintendo stores in China have been capitalising! Nippon numba wan!!1!

Will the games get confiscated? Well it really depends. If he's able to pay the customs which is likely just 20%, then assume each game is $50, 50*625*0.2=$6250 in customs, he will be able to keep the games.

Now games like Animal Crossing sell for over $200, Pokemon SS o/ sells for similar prices. Switch fitness ring sells for $300. Even after that hefty tax, he'd be capitalising like a champ.
CPC: We are totally communist.

The test currently used, qRT-PCR of a nasopharyngeal swab, is insanely sensitive. If there's one copy of viral RNA in the sample--note that this does not necessarily mean a virus particle--it will turn a positive, and based upon my own experiences in doing qRT-PCR, it likes to put out false positives from time to time too. Furthermore, there was a study done in Rhesus monkeys that showed they could not be reinfected. So I don't think getting reinfected is a thing.

What's the sens and spec of the test the CDC is using? I've never got an actual answer for this.

I'm on the mend from corona-chan, it's been a hell of a fucking ride that I wasn't sure I'd come out the other side of. I'm three weeks in now and only starting to not feel like death is imminent. I'm completely drained of energy and feel like a heavy asthmatic just showering but I'm turning the corner now.

I just want to say deadass seriously this place saved my partner's life. No one else was taking this shit seriously but the start of this thread made us see what a real threat this shit was going to be. At that time he was on a powerful immunosuppressant drug taken to control a rare form of spinal arthritis that hits mainly young healthy men. This drug was such that a common cold would have him laid out for weeks. Upon reading up on everything that the media and public at large wasn't saying at that time I urged him to discontinue his medication temporarily and directed him to this thread. He consulted with his doctor who was like "lol I guess" basically and told him he was being paranoid but he wouldn't be harmed if he wanted to discontinue for now. We then both gathered all supplies, masks, gloves, bought a car, stopped taking public transit, and took every precaution we could. Everyone at my company called me paranoid, crazy, overreacting, and brushed me off as some ditzy woowoo chick. I'm so glad that we kept at it. Two months later despite all our precaution I came down with the worst backpain of my life followed by a wet tickly feeling in my throat. You already know what happened next. Thank fuck we were stocked up and ready to go.

If we hadn't been prepared, if he hadn't made the choice to err on the side of caution after reading everything here and discontinue his meds I fully believe he'd be dead. He was sick for months the last time he got a simple strep and had to be hospitalized. As it stands now his only symptom has been the cough, he never got the fever, never got the malaise, and has otherwise been healthy. I'm sure his youth , athleticism, and genetic luck played a part, but I know those meds would have undone all of that. So as fucking sappy as it is, thank you fellow farmers, I genuinely believe you saved a life and at the very least made my mind a lot more at ease through this whole shit sandwich.
