UN China reclassifies dogs as pets instead of livestock

China's Ministry of Agriculture issued new guidelines Wednesday that reclassify dogs as pets instead of livestock, part of the country's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

"As far as dogs are concerned, along with the progress of human civilization and the public concern and love for animal protection, dogs have been 'specialized' to become companion animals ... and they will not be regulated as livestock in China," the notice said.

The coronavirus is believed to have originated in horseshoe bats, which may have passed the disease to other wildlife species for sale in the markets of Wuhan, where the virus was first detected.

Following the outbreak, China banned the breeding, trading and consumption of wildlife.

The move to reclassify dogs was welcomed by animal welfare groups like Humane Society International.

"This draft proposal could signal a game-changer moment for animal protection in China," said Wendy Higgins, a Humane Society International spokeswoman, Reuters reported.

The group estimates that nearly 10 million dogs are killed each year in China for meat.

Shenzhen, in southern China, became the first city in the country to ban the sale and consumption of dog and cat meat last month, according to the BBC.

What's wrong with the Chinese where they need to eat dog meat? I feel like it'd be optimistic to help this reduces their gross diet.

Good idea to not eat dogs and cats so that the stereotype is now wrong. How are they going to change the diet of a massive population?

Window dressing to try and prevent the world from wreaking economic vengeance on them, nothing more.

So they passed a law, do they intend to enforce it?

Not if no one is looking, they don't, this is just so when a CCP official is dumb enough to get caught buying a crate of live puppies for his baby food plant, they can execute him with a veneer of legitimacy for "violating law" not "revealing how the sausage is actually made".

so dogs in China are going to be treated slightly better than the humans there now?
lol no.

There'll be an effort (if you can even call it that) for a little while as the chinks attempt to clean up their image in the wake of this communist flu pandemic, but after a few weeks, maybe a month or two tops they'll go back to boiling animals alive in an effort of make their tiny chink chubbies even half an inch bigger.

Never trust the chinese, empathy is a completely alien concept to them when it comes to dealing with animals. Or people.

You would have thought the Chicoms would have done this around the 2008 Summer Olympics, when everybody was saying "Is China getting better?" and pointing at signs of democratization, but no. It's only after Pooh Bear became the most backsliding dictator since Mao, and knowingly and manipulatively unleashed a plague onto the world because Trump told him to BTFO.

Oh course, the globohomo is sucking Pooh's prick like it's a 100-acre wood, by amplifying how great China is, just like they were with their pathetic aid sending medical supplies they have a global monopoly on to Italy.

I just assumed the Chinks there don't give a shit about the classification either way.
They prolly don't.
Yeah, I don't really think the chinks have any particular objections to eating "pets" either. Given the fact that they were chucking cats out of high-rise windows during the Wuhan quarantine, I doubt they really treat pets any better there than livestock.
