Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I read on a local subreddit(lol) that they want the shutdowns to be more draconian. They want restaurants to stop take outs and delivery’s along with grocery stores being curb side pickup only. People should be ticketed for leaving the house and public transportation to be shut down. Who are these assholes? I’m leaning towards the Karen’s.
Middle aged Karens, tech-savvy old boomers, paranoid tinfoilers, germaphobes and let's not forget wimpy milennial shut ins who probably already had all their wants and needs delivered to their doorsteps pre-corona, seeing as it is reddit. All have the same problem: they never think about the lifestyles of others and how completely locking oneself away at a moments notice isnt possible for many.

The Chinese have been livid at Japan for years for their historical revisionism about the Rape of Nanking. What they're doing is the exact same fucking thing they bitched at the Japanese for doing.

Total hypocrisy. Japan wasn't harsh enough on China during World War II.

The article I wanted to find on a particular site appears to be memory-holed, but a TL;DR summary is:
  • Democratic State senator (and some family members) get COVID-19.
  • Person recovers thanks to chlorohydroquinone, praises Trump for making it available, draws fire from media and fellow Dems for touting "unproven" treatment.
  • Person, being African American, appears to claim that POCs are being denied testing strictly because of their skin color and hometown while further stating that she only got tested because of her status with state government.
The last point leads into an article I did find:

Archive:

TL;DR - Because African Americans make up 14% of the state population, 33% of the COVID-19 cases, and 40% of the COVID-19 deaths, the Governor wants to create a task force -- led by her POC lieutenant governor -- that will look for the underlying reasons and inequities. Somehow I doubt the task force will admit much of it has to do with bad lifestyle choices such as smoking or lack of proper hygiene.

The amount of false news this thing is generating is off the charts. Does the news media have no... ethics? Desire to maintain credibility...? Journalistic integrity?
One fundamental of journalism, is to produce a story. So journalist does whatever s/he can, to knit together a story. If you work for a massive machine like Reuters or LA Times or Washington Post, if you spin batshit, it won't cross your editor's desk. They have a brand to sell, and if educated readers detect bullshit, that's it for their paper.

From what I've seen, "false news" on mainstream news outlets is interpreting in shades of black when in reality, perhaps shades of gray is a more apt description.

However, much of the information is dated, or presented by a journalist who has a poor understanding of the subject. A lot is overly optimistic IMHO.

Some of it might also come from a standpoint that we don't agree with.

There are a lot of bullshit conspiracy theories out there, that absolutely defy rational thinking. And they don't stand up to scrutiny. That is absolutely false news.

if this is really case (perhaps medical kiwis can provide anecdotes if they live in rural areas) that means there's going to be an extremely weird market effect with regards to healthcare in the coming months/years in the US. i wonder if we're going to get nationalized healthcare just as a necessity to keep the more rural healthcare workers employed.
between this and the Fed purchasing company assets as collateral for loans, and printing money (i.e., issuing bonds) like there's no tomorrow to keep the economy afloat, we practically live in a giant centralized state run by banks, amazon, google, and walmart. we're china without the CCP as the power center at this point.

sort of off topic but still, this pandemic is going to have long-reaching policy repercussions that we can't even begin to predict at this point for how non-lethal the disease seems to actually be, especially compared to the spanish flu or (in the worst possible case) the plague, much less SARS or MERS.

Not in the US, but I have a friend who is a doctor in a rural part of England. She has had a huge drop in patient numbers because of travel restrictions and people deciding not to bother the doctors unless they have the coof. She’s incredibly bored atm. However she said they’ve had two cases of Coronavirus in their local hospital so it could be starting to percolate through the local population- especially since two weeks ago a bunch of rich cunts with holiday homes in her county decided to flee London for their picturesque seaside bolt holes, regardless of the fact that her area does not have the medical resources of a major city and they’ve likely spread the infection to the (fucking furious) locals.

Thats probably the main reason they locked shit down, if they only locked down one state or city everyone would flee, also people don't realize until they visit these places how underequiped places are. I'm sure they don't even have ventilators.

I never really get responses when I bring that up, usually I just get blocked. Imagine shilling for the fucking CCP in the name of justice and human rights?
50 cents is good money when you're furloughed, fam.

So do I believe the channers who say there's no virus now, or that guy who said it becomes the apocalyse plague after it infects Brazilian bats?

I'm leaning toward the Wikipedia-scholar basement-dweller stereotypes. I swear the more Draconian the bullshit sounds, the more I'm reminded of that Simpsons where Lisa joins Mensa, and they take control of the town, and put out weird laws that make no sense and piss off the townsfolk.

I wonder if Stephen Hawking would call our lockdown strategy a "Fruitopia" if he were still around.

Yeah, it’s definitely the reason they locked shit down and restricted travel to places like the Scottish islands to locals only- it would devastate those local populations who tend to be elderly and whose access to a major hospital might be hours away and involve a ferry.

In my friend’s case, her locale is a bit more balanced in terms of age of the people, but it’s mainly a hilly rural farming/ fishing community and the roads round her way are almost all single track country lanes so journey to the hospital in an emergency would take much longer than you’d think even if it wasn’t that far away.

Dont know what site you are looking for it on, but you are referring to this woman from Detroit:

It was posted earlier int he thread, god knows how many hundred pages. Happened on april 6th.

Mass-ish graves for the poor in NY.

View attachment 1223189View attachment 1223190
they counted 40 in the caption but it looks like half are already buried so 80-100 maybe with room for more.

Funeral procedures for COVID victims.

Average funeral cost $6500 higher in high cost of living areas.

I have a feeling that most people will end up in a mass grave or cremated by the county. We are facing a global recession, if you have $6500 around the house, you might need it. Just my opinion.

Well, journalistic vultures 7News in Australia have at least admitted what we all know :

EVERYTHING IS CLOWN WORLD. If you go for a run, you WILL turn into a clown.
It's just a little too on the nose now. https://archive.vn/ZD1JC

Their collective dicks are growing hard over that "50 people tested positive again" stuff in SK.
No mention that the tests are probably faulty or other reasons, 7NEWS go straight to "this could go on forever, killing everyone OMG". Also, don't you love how everyone is an expert now?

They also called a rise of one death a SPIKE. They've been pissed off we're falling in cases and can't handle the gravy train could end. They're ghouls.

The PRC can't make new things because it lacks whatever the real-world equivalent of The Secret Fire.

Yet states can acquire it. The Japanese very famously were once written off as being merely able to copy things incredibly well. Indeed, it's why Japanese-British relations were so close from the late 1800s through to the mid 1920s. They purchased lots of rights to british tech and copied it damn near perfectly. Their first mass produced car was a copy of the Austin Seven, their first railway locomotive was built by the UK's famous Vulcan Foundry.

It was war and a need to innovate with a lot less, and the eventual fallout of losing the war that caused them to innovate more and more.

Spot of democracy probably helped too. Can't let the peasents starve or they won't vote for you.

Hart Island has been the Potter's Field of New York City for at least the past 100 years. This isn't news, its tabloid sensationalism and fear-mongering. And many of these are temporary since New York City is hosed at the moment with several hundred dead and infected bodies a day so families can't make arrangements easily, or quickly.

I keep saying this yet it keeps getting posted anytime a news outlet is thirsty for clicks.

Why is this tabloid fodder and fear mongering?

New York has an insane number of cases. They need to bury people. End of story.

Even if you could afford a proper burial for Aunt Tilly, good luck finding a funeral home who can process her, another COVID victim, PLUS the regular run of the mill deaths ...

The Hazmat suits seem a bit extreme, but they might be due to soil contamination in the area, and not to the people in the pine boxes. Or to the backfill they are using.

Tim Minchin blasts Scott Morrison's response to the coronavirus crisis and says he doesn't deserve credit because he's 'just taking advice from people'

(Tim Minchin's a butthurt lefty fag here who makes really bad songs.)

27022838-8206601-Tim_Minchin_has_said_Scott_Morrison_does_not_deserve_credit_for_-m-13_1586474373559.jpg

The left-wing comedian released a song this week criticising the Prime Minister for going on holiday to Hawaii during the bushfire crisis and 'fumbling' in coronavirus press conferences.

But, in an interview on the Today show on Friday morning, he said Mr Morrison should not be praised.

'I don't think any leader would have failed to do what he's done in the last couple of weeks because he's just taking advice from people,' he said.

'The credit doesn't go to Scott, it goes to everyone.'

Minchin's criticism came despite the fact Australia has far fewer cases relative to its population that its western counterparts.

In other words, not enough brown people have died yet for them to care?

Sweden banned all "unnecessary trips" to Sweden according to www.krisinformation.se. I don't know if allowing Somali rapefugees to enter Sweden to collect welfare is considered "a very important reason to enter Sweden" but it wouldn't surprise me considering their government.

A lot of room for interpretation in this "travel ban."

I am posting the Swedish version so our Swedish Kiwis can translate it better than me.

That's the EU bargain: give up political liberties in exchange of EU cash.
Given that the ones accused of running the EU, namely the rich northern states, have this far always flat-out rejected the idea of Eurobonds, which has been raised repeatedly and exclusively by southern European nations, that comment makes no sense in this context.

I'm pissed. My awesome family member, who has been a pediatric nurse since the late 80's, and all of her coworkers were forced to take a 10% pay cut. Health care workers should be making hazard pay rn. Wtf is that shit

I'm also mad because some of the great lakes near by are only allowing boating fishing. So the poor can't fish of dams or public docks. Some people literally get most of their meat from the lakes... Washington is so short sided it doesn't realize some people don't just depend on groceries to manifest at a store.
