Yaron Brook on how coronavirus will embolden environmentalists

https://archive.vn/KgSLq

Audio only upload because it's ~30 minutes and the video adds little to the audio.

I know people are going to complain because he's an Objectivist and Objectivists are loopy, but I think he's got a point that we're bound to see people way 'People accepted action on coronavirus because it was an exponentially increasing problem and the lockdown made the country a lot more environmentally friendly. Climate change is also an exponentially increasing problem and all those proles don't really need to fly or drive cars like us important media types. Let's try to stop them with taxes and policy changes'

You can imagine the sort of thing they'd go for. More taxes on fuel, bailouts only to carbon-neutral businesses, more state planning, less capitalism. AOC's Green New Deal might prove to be prophetic rather than the economically illiterate mess it seemed like when she announced. Back then the DNC pretty much just laughed in her face. I'm not sure those sorts of ideas will be as easy to defeat at a time when the government has power, via the bailout, to simply decline to allow chunks of the economy it disapproves of to exist.

Of course, it will take time. I reckon Trump will win next time in the US and even if he doesn't Biden seems like a Clintonian neoliberal type, not a hardcore commie like Bernie, though I think even Bernie would have baulked at the Green New Deal. And in the UK I think the Labour Party is in too bad a shape to mount a challenge for five or ten years. Still the results of the next election can never be predicted with certainty and the results of the one after that even less so. It's worrying the way young leftists are much more commies than they are neoliberals. The Green New Deal may not get implemented in the next five years but a lot of people on the left, including the most activist parts of it, do want something like that and they think Biden is a sellout for not offering them it.

Oh my fucking god he unironically Happy Merchanted.

Here in my coastal CA county, the boot remains firmly upon the people's necks.

CA may be pushed along by WA and OR. Supposedly all 3 governors are creating a comprehensive plan to reopen. Eastern WA will likely be the first to open. Some counties there dont even have 20 cases total. Then rural OR and CA. But if you live in a large city in any of those states, youre fucked. Thats where the population density fucks everyone over and people are the most scared because theyre used to having everything open and within 5 min walking distance.

Peter Hitchens on the 'Hysterical reaction to Covid19 & public support of lockdown is scary & dangerous'

Kind of ironic how the normally ultra-black pilled Hitchens is in favor of opening up.

I like that someone is doing a counterpoint to the prevailing lockdownist narrative though, even if I don't agree with them.

Hitchens has long been a contrarian and turned utterly asinine after his brother died.

Bitch, if you had the bat flu you'd feel like you were coughing up a lung.

The dry cough isn't even the worst part of it. It's even worse when people start experiencing breathing difficulties on top of the dry cough. It becomes uncomfortable and even painful to cough, because they feel like they don't have enough air inside to facilitate coughing. People try to suck in a breath and it feels like their lungs aren't cooperating, so they instinctively force themselves to take deeper breath experiencing all sorts of pain all over their ribcage and their backs. Saying that "it's like the flu but worse" doesn't even capture what it actually feels like to these patients who begin to panic because they are still breathing but they can tell/feel they're not taking in enough air, no matter how deeply they try to breathe even and despite their often painful efforts.

It's been mentioned a few pages back that Google and Apple are planning on rolling out bluetooth based contact tracing "apps" . Not really apps, more like a core functionality feature.

There was a video about this that I came across. I can't find it right now unfortunately, if I do I'll post it later. I also wanted to do a post on the whole Esri/Google thing with that black heatmap with the red dots that everyone and their mother has been using. When you'd type "Coronavirus" or "Covid-19" into Youtube, the Livestream of the Esri/Google heatmap was the first thing that show up. It's only very recently that they put other videos on top but it's still in the top three hits for those search terms.

Something to make you laugh first: Biohackers are posting some funny shit on Youtube:

Ya, am kind of in the middle. Our town is maybe 30,000, but runs into the Monterey/Carmel complex of towns. Altogether about 100,000 or so. Have maybe 120 cases for whole county, total 450,000 people, but idiot county health director keeps saying we'll have 33,000 cases within a month and the county supervisors are stupid enough to believe him. Fuck them all.

Walked up to Walmart this morning. Plenty of water. Decent supplies of fresh meat/poultry. Plenty of eggs. Good on milk, only fair on butter/margarine. Lots of toilet paper, if you like Walmart brands. Decent supply of paper towels, Bounty and Walmart brands. Found a pack of napkins and a 3-pack of tissues. Baby wipes there, but only in big boxes, for $26.99. Got the napkins and tissues. since I don't know if the commissary will have any tomorrow. Scored two packs of my favorite Outshine bars. Supplies of frozen desserts improving. Grabbed a bag of Hostess mini-donuts.

Still no Trumpbux. No idea why. Get Social Security. Filed 2018 taxes. Filed 2019 taxes last week. IRS took payment out of our checking account Monday, so I know they have our bank information. Try to check - cannot give status. Luckily, and most gratefully, this is nice to have instead of a matter of survival. If I don't see something Monday will start digging around.

Yeah, my city is much larger and we still have less than 300 cases. The grocery stores are totally fine. The only thing that hasn't recovered is the toilet paper and paper towels, but that's mostly the stores' fault. They are putting out like 5 packs of toilet paper every few hours. Just put all the product out for fuck's sake. There's even entire bins of hand sanitizer that no one looks twice at. Meat is fine, eggs are fine, milk is fine.

Thankfully we have a decent mayor right now, she's not a Dem and I'm hoping she will push for an opening soon. There's too many towns in surrounding areas that need to be open in the summer, because their main income is from tourists looking to hunt, fish, and camp. If these activities are shut down all summer, expect the unemployment number to double in rural areas. They're ok now but lake towns just won't survive without tourism.

I may be wrong on this, but from what my mother was saying, for those on Social Security the payment will (may?) be coming from Social Security instead of the IRS. So it gets handed off to another agency to deal with.

The only thing missing in area stores where I live are handsoap and toilet paper. People here are of the mindset that if you don't snag all of the handsoap and TP you can when you see it pop up in a store, then you'll miss out. Consequently, people have been snagging up all of the TP and handsoap, so most everyone misses out. I wish people would stop being stupid. I can still find these things at dollar stores, if I arrive at just the right times when the stars align.

I'm having the same status unavailable problem. I pay anything I owe through my bank account but receive any refunds as a check, which apparently means I have to re-enter my information if I want direct deposit, but the site gives me that error message when I click the "my payment" link so I can't update my info.

Apparently a lot of people are having this problem even though there is no reason they wouldn't be eligible, so I think it's a problem on their end.

Yup, our area is a huge tourist area, year-round. Few hospitality jobs pay well, and the cost of living is very high. Stepdaughter laid off from part-time job at a restaurant. Son laid off from his job at a resort, believe daughter-in-law will be furloughed from her job at the aquarium. Between the two of them, especially with the Federally-augmented unemployment, they should be okay for the next four or five months. Believe things will open up here well before that. But there are many, many, many others like them in our area. Area also has two small military bases which are major employers. Also has a university, community college, and a hospital. But few hospitality workers would be able to get jobs at those places, and the hiring processes take forever.

Agree. Luckily and gratefully can wait. Just feel sorry for those who were counting on that money to feed the family or keep the lights on.

Added: Yup, the President is the ONLY one who gives a shit about all the people living under house arrest.

It should be interesting to see how the air quality maps change as things start back up. Ventusky dot com is fun. Personally I think the natural pollen without machine-made pollution is hitting my sinuses worse than usual. Maybe we need some carbon emissions to fight nature for the sake of my allergies.

Nothing about how this is playing out in the third world.
India's had a recent uptick in their death count. There's no way they can quarantine that many people and I suspect that this thing is spreading like wildfire through the hundreds of thousands of malnourished street urchins languishing in the slums of Bangalangalolololarashabad. Maybe some of them will be lucky and get trampled by an elephant instead of having their lungs melt.

do we have french speakers here?
i could need a translation of this...
