'Crysis Remastered' Is Bringing Cult Classic First-Person Shooter To PC; Consoles With Ray Tracing

KEY POINTS
  • Developer Crytek officially announced "Crysis Remastered" after teasing fans with cryptic tweets
  • It's been 7 years since the final game in the trilogy, "Crysis 3", was released
  • "Crysis" was considered a benchmarking tool by PC gaming enthusiasts when it first came out
  • The popular first-person shooter is making its way to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, etc
"Crysis" was once known as one of the most formidable video games any enthusiast could run on their PC. While it acted as a true benchmark test for many gaming enthusiasts when it first released 13 years ago in 2007, it's no longer the graphical powerhouse it used to be. Now, with the newly-confirmed "Crysis Remastered," that's all about to change.
Developer Crytek has officially announced the visually enhanced "Crytek Remastered" for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The key detail here is that, for PC gamers, this particular release will feature the graphical enhancement ray tracing, which will improve its visual fidelity by a wide margin. There will be additional tweaks to both gameplay and its general replayability as well, which is likely needed after over a decade of dormancy.
The official description on the "Crysis Remastered" website notes that it will feature "new graphic features, higher quality textures, and CRYENGINE's native hardware and API-agnostic ray tracing solution." Ray tracing is a sophisticated way to render lighting. It simulates and tracks rays of light produced by a source and thus, makes shadows look incredibly realistic.
Just days prior, the official "Crysis" Twitter account whirred to life with a cryptic "RECEIVING DATA" tweet, followed by "Hey Nomad, you're still with us?", which were both references to the original first-person shooter. Jake "Nomad" Dunn was the original hero from the first "Crysis" game, but he didn't make an appearance in the two follow-up games "Crysis 2" or "Crysis 3." Naturally, fans speculated that these two tweets could only be hinting at a remake or an update from the first game of some sort.

"Crysis" has consistently been one of the most popular first-person shooter titles since its 2007 release, and it still comes with its legions of fans waiting to jump in and get back in the battle. Right now, however, ahead of the remake the only way to play it is via PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
There is no release date for "Crysis Remastered" just yet, however, as the official tweet announcing the release only indicated that it would be "coming soon."

2 is better in every single way and the only Crysis game even worth playing so who cares.

Isn't Crysis 2 that garbage seventh gen console First-person shooter?

Crysis Warhead>Crysis 1>Crysis 3

Crysis 2 isn't worth mentioning. For game made in 2011, it's consolefied, CoDified trash. The game is so fucking bad. It was built on the limitations of seventh-gen consoles.

I didn't buy it. Waste of fucking money. I pirated that garbage. The multiplayer demo let me know how bad the game was going to be.

The entire series is mediocre dogshit. The campaign on the first is fine, if again very generic, until it introduces aliens.

I have heard the argument that it's just a glorified tech demo. I've got the first game, but I never found the gameplay engaging enough to actually play it through to the end. I didn't get to point where you start fighting aliens but i assume it becomes a chore to play through from then on.

The Crysis IP is also owned by EA, so it's an instant pirate from me; If I decide the graphics are good enough to test out current and future rigs.

The thing I remember most about Crysis 2 is that even though you had a super soldier nanosuit on, you couldn't run at a light jog for more than 10 seconds before running out of stamina.

Crysis has a story?

Why call it Crysis Remastered? The original was already a technical marvel.

Why not Crysis Next or something? Also, I'd love to see how they port this on the Switch. Put their porting skills and Switch hardware to the test.

Duh, you could just run past everything if they let you use the suit powers nonstop. As it is they are still very generous.

Crysis 2 gets a lot of shit from retards for being too "linear" and "console-ized" but that's a joke. All of the Crysis games are linear and funnel you along from one semi-open area to the next. Obviously Crysis 2's areas are smaller, considering it's set in New York and not a fucking jungle island. It has everything the other games have, just 150% less tedious running through empty spaces where nothing is happening. I guess that's a bad thing to some people.

I also liked that about Warhead. They had smaller chunks of what made the game great. In a way, the Crysis games at their best remind me of games like Deus Ex and Dishonored. You enter an area and have a massive amount of freedom and toolsets to solve issues as you pleased.

I never did get around to playing any of the Crysis games but was always curious, so I'm glad to get a second chance.

Crysis 2 with a few good texture mods still holds up against modern games quite well and Crysis 3 still has some of the best vegetation ever in gaming (which sounds like weird praise, but there are some areas that really show this off well).

Pick up the original game on the cheap. It still looks gorgeous and this remake is somehow even more unnecessary than every other remaster so far. It's astounding how unnecessary this is. They're literally trying to sell a meme to idiots that will buy it.

This will be a cool tech show but imo Crysis isn't a good campaign.
Crysis was awesome during the first half, especially once the tutorial shit wrapped up. Once the thing happens and the stuff shows up the game turned to mediocre.

There's also already an HD texture mod for it out that does much the same thing. Also works with the Tactical Expansion mod for extra fun times.

Isn't there an issue with the original version being able to run on Windows 10 or something?

The more important question is, "Will it be worth playing this time?"

Answer? Most likely no. I played the original, and it was obviously the most gorgeous game out there, but the storyline was dull and hollow, and the multiplayer was non-existent.

It would require some sweeping changes to make it worth playing again but since it's a remaster I doubt anything will be changed. The campaign would have been far better off if it had simply been confined to the human element; just mopping up waves of increasingly more difficult and developed soldiers, with gradually heavier machinery (tanks, battleships, fuck maybe even a jet), to the point of discovering a close equivalent to the Nanosuit as a final boss.
