Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Its honestly likely just as lethal if not a little less lethal than the yearly flu.

The big difference is that we have no herd immunity (no developed immunity + no vaccine immunity), so that pretty much 99.9% of the population is fair game as an infection vector, whereas the flu is usually working with anywhere from 20-60% of the population depending how far that particular strain has mutated.

Also how long it takes to recover: 3 days to 1 week for the flu, typically, to anywhere from 1 week to 5+ weeks for Corona-Chan.

Because Trump had to go and politicize finding a treatment.
Orange Man Bad, so therefore treatments are bad!

(also "Big Pharma wants treatments, not cures!11")

((also fags butthurt about no AIDS vaccine, only treatments lol))

Some of us are working and seeing people we know who have kids to support laid off because of a weaksauce virus that doesn't do much to people in their 20's and kids; and we understand that not everyone is as lucky as we are to still have a stable income right now.

And also that's literally why people are protesting: so they can go back to work.

Thank you. From the bottom of my cold dead heart. For reminding people of what this thread apparently needs to repeat every 10 or so pages. It feels good seeing someone finally remember it.

We know the last 50 or so pages are just filled with the same people neg. rating every comment that doesn't coincide with their particular view on the issue because their motivations to go back to normal life are beginning to hit a fever pitch. TBH these types would take information off the back of a cereal box to justify their point of view at this point. Honestly I am being an asshole because I thrive off of schadenfreude which this thread became chock full of as of late.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but your biggest points of contention with the general "consensus" (not that we agree with each other on everything) have been:
1) "Well we can't prove that it DOESN'T cause long-term complications!"
2) "The government knows whats best for us, guys!"

the generation you are describing is not the Boomers. It’s the forgotten or largely invisible generation. They were kids during WW2
Boomers are born 1946-1964 ? So all postwar babies. Their kids are generally generation x. My parents were born just after the war so they grew up with rationing. Plenty of ‘four yorkshiremen’ stories anyway... I can never remember where millenials start.
As I explained, in high density areas the lockdown is necessary to keep the healthcare system from overloading. In rural areas it makes no sense unless their healthcare system is on par with the third world. Invetween it depends on circumstance.

NYC should've closed earlier. Buttfuckville in the middle of nowhere, Nevada had no need. The lockdowns aren't purely draconian. But they have been misapplied and executed poorly. And not everyone doing so is on a powertrip, many are just idiots. But some definitely are.
Exactly. Stockholm is not densely populated outside of a few ghetto areas and even they are really dense. The 2mill population is spread out over the archipelago. Almost half of swedes live on their own and the rest are antisocial autists who barely speaks to each other anyway. They were made for social distancing.
You can’t apply the same to a big city like NY, or London, or the whole belt that runs across Manchester to Sheffield and Leeds which is all one sprawl. The rest of the UK doesn’t need lockdown. The problem I suppose is that if you lock down London the rats flee and bring their plague ridden families with them.

Its honestly likely just as lethal if not a little less lethal than the yearly flu.
It’s worse than the flu for sure. Probably 6-10x as bad as a severe flu in terms of healthcare load. Remember that the impact of most flu yearly is reduced because there’s a huge drive to immunise risk groups - the elderly, small kids, anyone with cardiac or respiratory or immune etc issues. So we rarely see the ‘real’ impact of a flu season unless it’s a drastically new one and / or the vaccine guess was really off. Even with vaccine the flu takes out tens of thousands in the states each year, it’s a big killer.

Serological studies are done off cereal boxes now?

This sentence makes no sense. Where is the 'shameful joy' in this thread?

Your welfare benefits run out in 6 months. The Senate is already signaling no more stimulus bills, States are no longer getting unlimited financial assistance from Uncle Sam.

Which means your lazy ass gets off the fucking couch. And if we catch you licking toilet seats this time, you go straight to the dark place.
Links?

You're just an avatar of shit takes and brainless conclusions here. A one-stop shop of the dumbest talking points making the rounds.

Thank you for your service.

And just like that, the boot has finally dropped. Thank you. Now we don't need to pretend we didn't want what's about to happen.
the amount and sort of credit the south asked for was just to much. so its just 500 billion from other EU systems.

And people think the EU will become a country.
People dont understand that the HRE is the way the EU will be build in the Future. the splintering of Spain and Italy only helps with that.

Alright fuckers! I got a new pile of horror for you. Fuck fact. Products from the European Community got a sign, which is a CE, marking their quality. Well China has decided to mark their exports as "China Exports", see if you spot the difference:

They are BEGGING for a nuke.
Oh hey boomer facebook bullshit that was debunked over a decade ago.

There is no thing as a "China Export" mark nor does China intentionally use some copycat mark. It's all bullshit someone made up. The CE mark isn't a quality mark or an origin mark either. It's a bureaucrat bean-counter mark. Like FCC and underwriter's marking in the US. It means the item passes whatever regulations the powers that be made up in Brussels. That it won't interfere with your radio and has electrical safety features so that it doesn't burn down your house or whatever. This is required for it to be sold in the EU.

The difference here is factories fucking up their bogus CE mark. Just like they do with FCC, UL, CSA, ETL, and a whole host of other required markings they fake on their knockoff of a knockoff bottom of the barrel crap. I'm not talking normal cheap chinese stuff here (they can spare the money to do the real marks) it's the guys who don't even bother to do that. The dollar store garbage.

So basically we could have just continued life as is right now? The draconian measures are just a power-hungry trip?

Yes, pretty much. I could see tough measures at the start, but as a better picture of the numbers and locations of cases developed expected a degree of moderation. But in general this isn't happening. And we have one "governor" who is certifiably insane. Can't buy garden seeds or seedlings in stores in her Reich. It's time to plant gardens, bitch! Can use a non-motorized boat but not a motorized boat in her Reich. Why?

The harsher the quarantine, the harder the pushback. The pushbacks will only grow. And the more civil liberties, such as freedom of speech and religion, are infringed upon or denied, not only will pushbacks grow, but the Attorney General will stay involved.

Biggest casualty of the ChiCom Flu - people's belief and trust in government and law enforcement. Some people have always had this mistrust. Now everyone else is catching on. The next time there's a national calamity wonder how many people will even pay attention to what government says, much less buy that bullshit.

McConnell says states should be able to declare bankruptcy, wants to hit 'pause' on federal aid

A little perspective on why: by statute, states are supposed to have a fund set aside for paying for 1 year of unemployment for every citizen. There's no penalty for not keeping it filled, but some states - CA and NY especially - didn't have enough set aside for a single month when this all started. We're rewarding bad behavior by bailing them out, they should be allowed to take the hit. A state-level bankruptcy rewards the states that played by the rules and hopefully leads to decreases in excessive spending on social benefits by the more liberal states.

Here's a Stanford Economist talking about the issue. Starts about 20:40.

Personally, I agree with the sentiment, up to a point. States with large liberal majorities need a dose of reality, but this penalizes the blue-collar workers who object to those policies without a way to express themselves politically. If I had my way, I would trade state bailouts for limits on media ownership and getting the equal time rule back in some fashion appropriate to today's media landscape.

Saying this because the problem seems to be the result of one side getting exclusively positive coverage. Local elections are particularly impacted by name recognition, we could do a lot about the problem by simply getting other voices out there. Like it is supposed to be in a free and open society.

The amazing thing for me is watching people line up to protect institutional narratives about the virus. We all saw how much the initial projections were off, yet so many act as though we are about to lose millions of people. Protestors asserting their rights are regularly vilified in the media, can't look at a news website without seeing some key piece of disinformation. CNN had that propaganda piece the other day that was cribbed directly from the SCMP.

It's become theater for the benefit of China. Period. Journalists are spreading discord for the sake of creating panic, this is the true pandemic.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't care who doesn't like it. There are people in the media who deserve to be in prison for what they've done during this pandemic. Individual citizens are subject to 'common sense' restrictions on our freedom of speech, ie the 'shouting fire in a crowded theater' clause. But the media is subject to no such thing. No consequence for going in front of a country in pandemic and shouting panic and no hope. No consequence for claiming a safe, well known medication is dangerous and toxic. Why do we accept this double standard?
