Public Health Authority: Far too early to relax
The corona curve goes in the wrong direction.
Today, another 131 deaths were reported. It is clear that Sweden is again at a slightly higher level.
"It's definitely not over," says Anders Tegnell, state epidemiologist at the Public Health Authority.
During weeks 13 and 14, there were approximately 1,000 more deaths in Sweden than expected, overall. According to the Public Health Agency, it is clear that the deaths in Sweden this year will be significantly more than during a regular flu season.
- There have been more deaths than expected. It is definitely not over, we see this not least in this small upturn in Stockholm again, says Anders Tegnell with reference to the general picture of the corona virus in the country and the pressure on health care.
Loss of death
In total, Sweden now has 2,152 confirmed deaths and 17,567 confirmed coronavirus disease cases. Both in Stockholm and a number of other regions, there is a tendency for cases to increase.
One reason may be that there has been an increased backlog of reported deaths lately. According to the Public Health Authority, they still receive cases from the Easter weekend.
If the increase is a consequence of people traveling more, the Public Health Authority cannot answer.
- It's hard to know. It may be that the Easter holidays and increased social contacts may have kicked things off again. If we have a peak that later disappears, that indicates a lot, says Anders Tegnell.
Too early to relax
According to Tegnell, it is still far too early to hope that life will return to normal.
- It is not possible to relax, because then we see this kind of increase again, he says.
The Swedish Agency for Social Protection and Emergency Preparedness (MSB) also warns of an increase in the number of coronary cases if citizens do not continue to comply with the Public Health Authority's clear restrictions.
- There is a significant risk that people start to relax prematurely and stop following guidelines. Continue to follow the authorities' advice, continue to be source-critical and be part of the solution, says Svante Werger, special adviser at MSB.
All of Sweden is affected
Anders Tegnell cannot answer what the spread of the corona virus will look like in regions that have so far managed so lightly. But the forecast is bleak.
- It is wise to have good preparedness, it will come, the question is only when, says Anders Tegnell.
