You generally need to have a trait to be able to see it... that, or be trained to see traits you don't have.

For instance, I don't have the trait commonly known as sociopathy... though I have had many years experience with people who do, so I've been trained (so to speak) to recognise it in people. One of the red flags is when a person does something that they know would be wrong, but comes up with some very weak excuses for why it would be justified... Like, for a random example, justifying sex slavery for a 12 year old girl because she was the daughter of a Feminist. Or, for another random example, claiming that an attempted blackmail isn't anything wrong if it fails... or if the subject of the blackmailing agrees to do what they are being blackmailed into doing. Also known as "Successfully blackmailing someone into doing something they didn't want to do in the first place". (yep, she agreed to what you tried to blackmail her into... successful blackmailing detected. No matter what you might claim about it, you blackmailed her into doing something she didn't want to do...)

Now, I'm not saying anyone around here has done anything like that... and even if I were, I know full well that they wouldn't see anything wrong with them and would try to defend them using some silly justification that they would then deny in almost any other circumstance... but if we did see anyone pulling that shit, we'd know that they've always lacked any respect or compassion for anyone, unless it was for their own benefit.
