Microsoft Just Pulled an Ad Featuring Marina Abramovic After Right-Wing Conspiracy Theorists Accused Her of Satanism
Here's how a straightforward technology ad got twisted into allegations of Satanism.

You thought the current moment couldn’t get more surreal? Well, we have news for you. A new stranger-than-fiction art-centric clash has erupted, and it involves the software behemoth Microsoft, the world-famous performance artist Marina Abramović, and hysterical cries of Satanist ties from a far-right political group.
It all started on April 10, when Microsoft uploaded a video ad for HoloLens2, a headset designed for mixed reality, that prominently features the artist. Less than a week later, the ad vanished. (ARTnews first reported the video’s disappearance.)

The now-deleted video follows Abramović as she discusses her mixed reality work The Life, which premiered at London’s Serpentine Galleries in early 2019. The work offers visitors the opportunity to experience an intimate encounter with the artist in a 19-minute performance using the mixed reality Hololens2 headset, which enables the wearer to see both their real surroundings and virtual additions. (One of the work’s three editions is due to be sold at Christie’s in October with an estimate of $700,000.)

Before long, the video caught the attention of the far-right internet. Days after it was posted, the ad—which, just to be clear, contains no mention whatsoever of Satanism—was given a “thumbs down” by more than 24,000 users on YouTube.
A Microsoft representative declined to comment about the removal of the video. After being pressed for more information, the representative did not deny that it had been deleted, saying simply: “Microsoft doesn’t have anything additional to share here. Thanks!”
Screenshots and clips of the video have circulated around Reddit as well as Twitter and other social media. According to ARTnews, many of the disapproving votes came after Infowars, a far-right blog run by Alex Jones that has promoted conspiracy theories as news, published a story attempting to connect the new Microsoft video to an earlier theory that Abramović is a Satanist.

Abramović did not immediately respond to an email from Artnet News seeking comment.
It was four years ago that the artist first became a subject of interest among the far right, after the emails of Hilary Clinton’s former campaign chairman, John Podesta, were hacked and made public. Among them was an invitation forwarded by John’s brother, Tony Podesta, a lobbyist and art collector, to a gathering of significant donors to her Kickstarter campaign.
Those who pledged over $10,000 in support of Abramović’s now-aborted art institute were invited to attend an intimate dinner party with the artist called “Spirit Cooking with Marina Abramović.” The event’s name was a play on a series of 1990s performances in which she used pig’s blood to write phrases such as “fresh morning urine sprinkle over nightmare dreams,” or “with a sharp knife cut deeply into the middle finger of your left hand eat the pain” on the walls of museums. In 1996, she also created an “aphrodisiac cookbook” of the same name.
The dinner itself—which John Podesta did not attend—was, Abramović later said, just a “normal dinner” with about 10 guests. But seizing on the name and Abramović’s nontraditional art, internet conspiracy theorists labeled it evidence of a “sex cult” or “bizarre occult ritual” that had ensnared high-ranking Democratic operatives.

Abramović defended herself at the time, saying: “I’m outraged, because this is taken completely out of my context. Anybody who wants can read my memoirs and find out that [my work] is far away from Satanism.” But on the internet, it seems, Marina is no match for angry YouTube commenters.

Do you mean pagans, or what are you talking about. The hell do you mean old world, is that just a way to refer to tumbler. I'm so confused if there's a land of satanist out there let us know because that seems to be a story on it's own. Also how the fuck do you have the nerve to refer to us as hicks and then use the expression Old World.

No, I mean satanists. I have had the impression that satanism in USA is somehow more progressive or liberal, but at least here in the Northern Europe(yes, you're a fucking hick if you don't understand the term Old World as referring to Europe), satanism is pretty much like I described it. Apart from one particular cult(which everyone else in the satanist scenery considers as faggots), satanists are some of the most extremely conservative people you can find around here. And that's why it feels so fucking weird to me that you 'muricans see satanism in something like Marina Abramovices works, as they could not be further from what satanism in the year 2020 actually is.

Then why the fuck would they put her in an ad and expect it not to generate backlash? That's such a surprised pikachu decision.
I think they did but miss calculated what type that would be. I think they tough that most people would't care, let alone voice their opinions but SJW types to stand for poor womxn artist that's getting harassed by nazies witch would likely be picked up by friendly leftist media. So most loudest voices would be make them sound daring and progressive and people would be unlikely to check beyond news tittles so positive enough free publicity. Not that stupid but normal people nowadays react as fast if not faster than media. To most normies this chick look obliviously bonkers so microsoft looks bonkers for hiring her. Funny stuff like that gets the ball rolling faster than media harpies can stop and she not "oppressed" enough anyway to get them actually intrested.

So you know that american satanists are more likely left wing and european satanists are more likely right wing, yet somehow you're still surprised that people in opposition to satanism in the US lean right.

And how you run into so many satanists anyways? Do you host orgies or something?

The Sorrow of Carpathia.
Heh, fitting. It's called "satan summoning his legions" though.

Meh, who gives a fuck if Bill Gates hired some tryhard Serb boomer who acts like a black metal groupie reject to do a weird ad for Microsoft?

It's Bill Gates. Having an elderly creep like Marina Abramovic in an ad is one of the least evil things that sick fuck has done. It's like chiding Bob Iger for wearing a white shirt after Labor Day.

And I accept the inevitable negrates I will be bombed with.

It would seem less suspect if he hadn't been so openly pushing the bug pod lifestyle so hard these past few years. Seems like everything has been accelerating towards a cliff. Out of all the controversial artists, why this one? Why not pisschrist? Why not one of the millions of other artists without the baggage? Why not an artist who your userbase may have heard of outside of 4chan? What about banksy? His political views are still aligned with globohomo. Guess what I'm getting at is that we probably should give a fuck.

Old World is what Europeans call Europe when they want to put on airs.

And how you run into so many satanists anyways?

I think I might know the answer...

Apart from one particular cult(which everyone else in the satanist scenery considers as faggots)

🤔

It is. The ones I've seen are all open boarder, help refugee faggots who use Satanism as a way to justify their own selfish narrassistic behavior to engage in hedonism.

Checked out a burlesque show with the theme of satanic panic. The church of Satan was hanging out in their lobby for recruitment. After the show they did a black mass, it was the cringiest shit ove ever seen. The whole thing boils down to "fuck you mom and dad, I don't want to goto church on Sunday"

Really I always thought it was odd how they mock Christians for thier mass but then "ironically" hold one, while they "ironically" claim tith and have ceremonial offices they hold for thier "ironic" ceremonies as they "ironically" sell items for these ceremonies and rituals that they of course don't believe in because they are all rational thinking atheists.

Also extra dumb thier PR campaign to show how harmless and nice they are when even thier own book says it's ok to be an asshole because the only purpose is to serve yourself. And somehow I'm suppose to like a selfish ideology over a selfless ideology like Christianity?

If you think child sacrifices, spirit cooking, and wicca rituals constitute conservative values, you have reached stupidity beyond no return.

Stop larping for lucifer, pick up a real Bible and find Jesus in repentance for your loss of braincells dumbfuck.

or are they just that out of the loop? I truly would like to know.

I think it's this more often then naught. If someone understands symbols better my interpretation, please correct me but from my understanding for "artists" like Abramovic the symbol of Satan isn't so much evil demon that eats christian babies and blight your crops but instead means materialistic worldview where you are your own master and God and don't let such phoney things like morals, rules, sacrifice, and society stop you from enjoying yourself. Basically an ideology for selfish assholes.

Fine, whatever. But these people are so high on their own farts that they don't realize that majority of people don't have the time to read a bunch of esoteric metaphysics books nor the time to learn tarot cards. They go with the societal given Christian meaning of Satan, the demon who lives underground and punishes sinners and harms good folks.

Then they are so disconnected that they are suprised that people are hostile to a concept that they have been taught all thier lives is bad.

On a sidenote: Chad Luciferianism > Virgin Satanist

Of all the famous and semi-famous people you could feature in an ad, and the possible controversies and baggage they might come with, casting this woman for any product or brand is a pretty dumb move.

Remember when Microsoft and Apple used to just feature musicians and film stars? Or hell, even just normal human beings who used their products for their day-to-day? But now...

Yes, this is normal. This is a completely normal way to interact with a child. You know, there's nothing inherently wrong here. Nothing at all. Just artistic expression. What? No, no, this isn't some kind of ritual child sexualization! Don't be ridiculous. Spirit cooking, handling a naked adolescent boy, look, it's all entirely normal! Very artistic. Yes. Absorb this kind of art, make it part of your mindset. Yes. Very good.

This whole thread is just one giant testimony to what I originally said: If you think that Marina Abramovic has anything to do with satanism, you're just the stupidest of the redneck hicks from the boonies. This is 2020, satanism is not some club of invisible bogeymen out there to steal your soul or corrupt your children. It's just another brand of religion, one practiced mostly by middle-aged angry men who lift weights and listen to black metal while driving in SUV's and raising their own kids and having bbq with their friends on weekends. Apart from their quite eccentric spiritual beliefs and the fact that they like to decorate with human bones and upside-down crosses there is nothing out of the ordinary going on with these people.

In essence, anyone claiming otherwise just doesn't know what satanism really is. This thing here, the idea that Marina Abramovic, person notorious for being ready to do anything to shock idiots and gain fame, would have something to do with satanism, is right there in the re-tard alley with the original Satanic Panic. All you're doing is playing in to Marina's coffers with this shit, as she certainly doesn't care about the nature of publicity she gets as her business is in creating controversy. In the past, she had to really hurt herself physically or masturbate in public places to get attention, nowadays it's enough to just show her face in one fucking ad and just wait as the idiot screeching of the conservatives reaches a feverish pitch.
