The Last of Us Franchise - Because it's apparently a franchise now. This thread has been double-DMCA’d by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Someone wrote this:

"The only way they could've done this good was advertise it as a sequel with a new cast, get to know abby ,her crew and her backstory but not show anything to hint at Joel and Ellie. Then have some part of the game featuring your crew getting attacked and firsthand see the amount of havoc and causalities THEN show it was Ellie ,Joel and their crew and have a big twist reveal."
This pretty much would be a mgs2 of subverting our expectations.

It's really incredible with how much hatred and contempt these companies have for their own customers.

When the DLC came out, and it was revealed that Ellie "batted for the other team," it was hardly a controversy. If there was one, then the outrage for the sequel would have happened long before these leaks had come out, let me tell you. I haven't seen a single person say "Who cares about the sequel? Ellie was ruined back when the DLC came out several years ago because they made her a lesbo!"

Maybe, just maybe, your customers aren't bigots, Naughty Dog. We just think your product sucks. And we think the lesbo and her "dad" deserved a lot better.
Companies like Sony treat their fanbase like paypigs and yet still be congratulated by the community.

Makes you wonder how Neil Druckmann got so much pull at Sony with how crazy he is.

Almost none.
I'm dead serious.

People like Druckmann don't advance to be in charge of big organizations or corporations - they get in charge of departments, studios, amd smaller groups, and almost never via merit. In a company as labyrinthine as Sony, Naughty Dog exists as one small part, and as long as it delivers financially, Sony doesn't give a fuck. It's only now that the shit's hitting the fan that Sony is even aware of it, and not through Sony of Japan - it's entirely being covered by the much smaller Sony of America, which is based in California and has a history of enabling shitheads like Druckmann.

Once TLOU2 fails, Naughty Dog will fold and the IP will fold and Druckmann will be forgotten.

I was never a fan of TLOU to begin with, since I thought Hennig was overrated even as a writer. (Don't get me wrong, the leaks convinced me that she was probably the best Naughty Dog had on their payroll, and she's actually competent, unlike Cuckman.) But this garbage fire exceeded even my low expectations.

Honestly, this reminded me of how Mass Effect 3 degenerated at the end as well, with rumours of how Hack Walters and Casey Hackson basically penning out the three colours ending by themselves without input from any other writers. Predictably, that shit bombed hard enough that it damaged the franchise as a whole, and they basically had to release a retcon ending just to salve the fanbase. (Andromeda put a hatchet to the corpse years later). It's quite amusing to see the similarities here. For those of you who never played Mass Effect, Drew Karpyshyn, was the original writer for the first game, and co-writer for the second. Omniously, he wasn't involved with the third game. Now, it wasn't clear why he left Bioware after 2012, but there was speculations then that he had creative differences with his co-writer, and the general spectre of EA management, and so was forced out. But the tone of the series changed over the course of the games, from a fairly grounded generic soft sci-fi setting, to a more action based one, then finally to the utter mess of the third and the forced "muh organics vs AI" theme. Hack Walters clearly had the same intention of Druckmann here, trying to make the franchise "his own". Though at least he didn't shit on Shepard too much. (Shepard's character was still gutted though, lol at forced PTSD and the final no-win ending.)

So yeah, while TLOU burning is tragic, it won't be the last time hubris burned down an entire franchise.

Do we know how much Anita Sarkeesian was involved as I remember she helped with the story?

Considering that the ending is Ellie getting violently punched and concussed, uh, probably not much. Also it doesn't seem like something she'd come up with. She dislikes violence to begin with, so "Hey, why don't we kill the dad with a golf club and then you play as the tranny who killed the dad" doesn't seem like her style as well.

I don't think even she could come up with playing as someone who killed the protagonist of the last game. That's some real BIG brained thinking.

I mean, I remember Anita's idea of a 'game' and it was a very basic bitch treatment. It was pretty mediocre, bordering on bad. Which honestly, would be an improvement in this situation as this idea is fucking terrible. (And yes, I am implying Anita fucking Sarkessian could have written a better sequel. Because holy shit, a mediocre game would be leagues better than this).

If anything, she would have made Ellie a badass Mary Sue and Joel ineffectual, where Ellie has to swoop in and save the poor, incompetent white man. Which would STILL be better than this.

Don't forget the best part, if you shot Star Faggot in the face, you got an immediate game over. Its hilarious, that ending was one big 'fuck you' to the fanbase. And the most hilarious thing is the majority gave them the finger and chose the destroy ending.

Almost none.

You're forgetting one thing: he will constantly try and pump out indie games and then blame his massive incompetence on the fanbase who didn't 'get' his masterpiece. The entire rest of his career will be spent whining.

Oh, Neil you stupid fuck. This isn't even the modern number. Sources vary but I've seen 20 to 40 million units sold. At the high end of these estimates it's beaten Fallout 4 by 2 to 1.

Lightning in a fucking bottle. You were given capital, industry talent and free fucking rein. And you fucked it up so bad that Naughty Dog would be lucky to break 10 mil. This is truly a monumental fuck up, and please, Neil, please, keep telling people not to buy it. That worked out really well for Dice, didn't it?

The only good thing the ME3 shitshow generated (lulz and meme aside) at the time was giving Dark Souls (and indies) an insane push toward a bigger audience: a bunch of pissed off people who felt betrayed after all the marketing saying "your choices, your ending" and disappointed by the mainstream of the time found home in an harsh and raw game that put them at the center and let them rediscover the pleasure and pain of being challenged and in some way respected instead of being handhold and force fed like a baby.
Add the word of mouth from the Old guard and pre-GG /v/ giving support even just to piss over the Stasus Quo and now one franchise is mocked with autism meme while the other influenced the industry more than some people would admit

Ps: Play Streets of Rage 4 guys,it's legit good old school fun and Blaze is THICC like never before

Like I said, Last of Us 2 will go down as one of the biggest flops in video game history and will be in the same chapter of the vidya history books as Custer's Revenge, Daikatana, Superman 64, MK vs. DC Universe, Duke Nukem Forever, Mass Effect Andromeda, and Fallout 76.

Not only is MK vs. DC Universe not even the worst game in its own franchise, it also spawned the highly successful Injustice series down the line. All the other games you wrote are either gigantic flops or disasters in their own right, but MK vs. DC has no place on that list as it did well for its parent company and wasn't poorly received by fans either (for Mortal Kombat standards).

Funny XD! 😏

Though nowadays Capcom made better Zombie games in recent years starting from RE7, RE1 port remake, REZ Port remake to RE2 Remake and now RE3 Remake.

Say what you will about Capcom? But at least they are not taking notes from Anita as they are from Japan thankfully. 🤫😬😅

I could never understand how anyone could support Sony seeing how they are always anti-consumer? I guess some people just love getting agendas pushed down their throats.

It’s where my idiot friends play multiplayer at so that’s my excuse.

Their blatant anti-consumer practices and censored weeb games don’t mean much to the millions who just grab a new CoD/FIFA every year.

MK vs. DC Universe is considered a flop mainly because it was merely the last nail in the coffin for Midway Games and it's the weird middle child between the PS2 MK games (Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon) and the new continuity set by MK9, sort of like how MK4 was that weird middle child between the classic MK arcade games and the Sixth Gen console MK games.

I mentioned it because I've seen it a few times on those "Biggest video game flops of all time" clickbait lists, although I'd honestly say that it was more of a game that under-performed than a true flop and Midway was already on its deathbed by the time it came out, so I do think it gets a bad rep.

Of course, I also enjoyed MK Armageddon unironically, and a lot of the hate that game gets is retroactive.

I remember Armageddon was actually pretty well-liked when it came out in 2006 and sold well enough, but there was a lot of pre-release hype it failed to deliver on and Midway's own spectacular downfall in the Great Recession probably did a lot to hurt its reputation in retrospect.

Oddly enough, the reverse thing happened for MK vs. DC Universe, mainly because of Injustice and MK9 helping reassure the fans that it would not be the last MK game ever.

But my experience is admittedly anecdotal, so make of that what you will.

That aside, I think The Last of Us 2 will massively bomb when it is released. Absolute best-case scenario, it breaks even and the woke journalists pretend to like it while everyone else hates it or just doesn't give a shit.

Capcom has improved, thank God, but REVII was kinda meh. The dlc pricing was bullshit too. The dlc with Joe was fucking amazing though. Really made the game for me.

Rumors for REVIII have been floating around. If it beats out TLOUII that'd bebe hilarious.

Indeed. Japanese people have respect for not fucking up their legacy IP, unlike Cuckthy Dawg!

Man, do the first Last of Us sales figures include all the remaster copies that were bundled with new PS4's in 2014?

Cause that seems like kind of bullshit if it does. I know plenty of people who didn't give a shit about the first game that still have it due to it being included with a Brack Friday Bunduru

They have to kill themselves if they fail, they can't blame internet bullies.

Not to my knowledge. The figures I've seen appear to be non-bundled purchases. Physical or digital.

Heck, you could even insert a feminist angle, if you have to shoehorn in some woke politics.
Handmaid's Tale did just that, a post-apocalypse America where the limited number of fertile women lived in a golden cage.

The could've put the cult to good use by doing just that.
Instead, we have "respect muh pronouns" killing the characters their audience wanted to see.

Just like Disney did with Star Wars...it's not good enough to kill off the old characters, you also have to retcon them and defile their legacy.
That would’ve been a bit TOO obvious of a rip-off from zombie classic 28 Days Later.

I just can't stop sperging about this game. Why? I liked the first one alright but I wasn't really hyped for this sequel. I didn't have it pre-ordered or anything. I can't put my finger on why every creative decision pisses me off so much.

Anyway, I just watched that new 1hr30 mins of leaked footage. My unorganised thoughts:

- What's with Abby's ridiculously long ponytail? Wouldn't that be the absolute worst way to wear your hair in a post-apocalyptic setting, or even just a combat setting? If a zombie grabs that, you're fucked. They'll rip your scalp right off. Honestly, I think it's just there to remind you that Abby is a woman. Her torso is so boxy, and those massive arms. If she had short hair you would just assume you were playing as a man.

- When you switch to Abby's POV after she kills Joel, you have some kind of flashback where you follow some latino/mexican guy Manny through some kind of base. Right outside the first room you're forced to walk conspicuously past a modern-looking gym with big windows and weights. I think this was put in so Cuckmann could point at it when people inevitably ask "How the hell is Abby so buff?". On that note, how the hell is Abby so buff? The gym alone doesn't explain it, she'd have to be drinking protein shakes every day too. What are they eating? You'd assume their diet is mainly grains and vegetables or something. In the first game it showed people eating rat kebabs ffs. And while I could understand the best food going to the military (Abby seems to be some kind of soldier), it still seems pretty ridiculous that she'd be eating like a first-worlder in our time.

- Why is everything lit with fairy lights? Several locations have this, and it seems like a choice made for aesthetics. Again, I'm willing to accept that nobody is manufacturing bulbs any more and you'd have to make to with whatever is available, but lighting your room with fairy lights to read by seems like a pretty dumb and inefficient way to do it.

- Everyone's having fun with calling him "Cuckmann", but the funny thing is there's a literal cuck storyline in this game. Dina's boyfriend (Danny, I think?) walks in on Dina and Ellie in their underwear, and his reaction is a kind of resigned "You gotta be kidding me". He doesn't seem mad at all. He's more pissed off that they weren't on patrol. This woman is carrying his kid, right? No reaction to being cheated on? I would have assumed that in this setting there would be a return to traditional family structure. Like, they'd all be living like the Amish. Or at least farming communities. But no, apparently everyone retained their west-coast views on poly relationships, and he's totally cool with it.

- That final fight. On reflection a final showdown between the two main characters is fine. I mean, done a million times before, but fine. What's bothering me is just how goddamn manly it all is. Cuckman's whole thing is that main characters and their partners are all women in this, right? Why couldn't they face off like women? Instead they're breaking arms like it's nothing, slamming heads into the ground like they're in the UFC. If you swapped them out with the cast of Red Dead Redemption 2 it would make so much more sense. People are fine with badass women characters in media, have been for decades now. But you never had Ripley or Sarah Connor fucking punching the alien / terminator with their fists like a man. Cuckmann seems to think you can just gender-swap without altering anything else in your story and it's fine. It's totally not. Doesn't make you some kind of bigot to point that out.

Heck, even MK (and Injustice) have been doing the women looking like men trend since 2002, these new video games need to catch up

Sucks that a lot of the franchises I liked have gone this way. Last year with MK11 and its politicising and absurd statement about the women being more covered and now this year with RE3 Remake and now this. The only thing remotely great is the backlash LOU2 is receiving is monumental. Definitely one for the history books.
