At first it was because they were all seen as weirdos to normal society but in modern SJW philosophy it comes as the consequence of inverting the natural flowchart of "I'm attracted to people of my own sex" → "I'm gay" to the oppositeAs for transsexuals/transgender? Easy: they hitched their cart to the progressive darling, the LGBT community. And it makes very little sense when you think about it: being a lesbian, gay or bisexual is all about your sexual orientation. It's what you're attracted to. Transgender is what you are, it's in a completely different psychological category, gender is not orientation, but they all get lumped together under LGBT.
I don't understand how they reached those conclusions, but hey... that's what they think.
"I'm gay" → "I'm attracted to people of my own sex".
When seen that way, being gay becomes a characteristic just like how being white, being tall, being disabled are all characteristics we deem inherent to someone, and so being isn't a quirk or a uniqueness, it becomes a way of being.
Same thing with being trans, it went from "I have gender dysphoria and feel awful in my body"→"I'm trans" to
"I'm trans"→"I have gender dysphoria (that I retroactively will add to every experience I ever lived prior to acknowledging transness", and so now that they are no different as to how they come to be, they enjoy the same legal protections despite the logic making room-temperature IQ levels of sense.
