US Donald Trump Says U.S. Won’t Close Economy Again, Even If There’s A Second Wave Of Coronavirus - GDP is supreme

President Donald Trump on Thursday said “we are not closing our country” if the U.S. is hit by a second wave of COVID-19.

His comments come on the same day that the United States reported another 2.4 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week That brings the total of new unemployment claims to more than 38 million in nine weeks..

In reference to states like California which have not reopened as quickly as others Trump said, “I don’t think the people are going to stand for it.” Yet Texas, North Carolina and Arizona have reported spiking numbers of cases as they’ve moved into reopening.

“People say that’s a very distinct possibility, it’s standard,” Trump said when asked about a second wave.
In a worst-case scenario, the infection curve of COVID-19 could mimic the most deadly pandemic in American history, the Spanish Flu.

More people died during that 1918 pandemic than the total number of military and civilian deaths that resulted from World War I and, according to the CDC, the second wave in the fall was responsible for most of the U.S. deaths attributed to that outbreak.

The president made his comments during a tour of a Ford factory in Michigan which has been converted to produce ventilators.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr. Anothony Fauci testified last week before Congress about a second wave.

“I hope that if we do have the threat of a second wave we will be able to deal with it very effectively to prevent it from becoming an outbreak not only worse than now but much, much less,” Fauci said.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield said last month that battling the virus in the fall could be “more difficult and potentially more complicated because we would have flu and coronavirus circulating at the same time.”

But Trump on Thursday remained confident in the country’s ability to deal with a resurgence.

“We are going to put out the fires. We’re not going to close the country,” Trump said. “We can put out the fires. Whether it is an ember or a flame, we are going to put it out. But we are not closing our country.”

Trump appeared at the Ford factory without a mask on Thursday, despite requirements at the facility that everyone wear PPE. The president said that he had taken his mask and eye shields off to speak with the media.

Just because the US doesn't want to be shutdown, doesn't mean foreign countries will go with it too. The situation is dynamic and you should be shutdown if it's a problem or other countries near by are having problems. Why is shutting it down never an option again?

Nobody's buying it so we gotta do this:

If you haven't noticed, this week there's been another narrative shift since people weren't buying the "people are going to DIE if we reopen the economy" appeal to emotion. Now they're back to torturing science and have added some torture of history and are saying "it's just like the first wave of the Spanish flu, the second wave is going to kill everyone like it did back then!" This is a good narrative for them since they can be spouting that shit all summer long, waiting for the deadly pandemic we were promised.

Then when their prediction fails like every other prediction of mass death from these "experts" it'll be time for the election and they can switch narratives to how Orange Man destroyed the economy over a disease "we always knew" wasn't so bad after all. You know, just like what they were saying back in February about how Drumpf was racist for shutting down travel to China.
So the answer is fuck everyone, no more precaution, if it comes back? This is a bad idea and anyone who knows what a second wave does can understand that.
Yes, just like I've helped kill grandmothers and babies every flu season by not wearing a mask or getting a flu shot. Except COVID-19 only lets me kill grandmothers since the amount of dead babies is the single digits. Guess Corona-chan is pro-life.

Honestly I don't care at this point. Safe vaccines take a long time to be finished, and having a vaccine for something like corona isn't really currently medically possible like the way having a catch-all flu vaccine isn't possible. Do people honestly believe the government can just take care of 40 million+ people for the next few years alongside all of the other responsibilities they have?

"b-b-but this is just soft eugenics! You are literally murdering the immunocompromised and weak!" no it's not you dumb nigger. It is literally natural selection at work. We have come a long way from the days of "stubbing your toe and dying from infection" but there are still many things outside of our control in the medical world and this is one of them. We will have to re open eventually. The second wave is inevitable, and the longer you try to stall it the less cautious/caring people will be as this lockdown goes on.

Remember when the reason given for shutdowns was to flatten the curve so hospitals aren't overwhelmed by an enormous initial spike, and not to keep any deaths from happening by closing everything until there's a vaccine?
What? People in power pulling a bait and switch on the governed? The funny thing is my hospital still has that "Flatten the curve!" signage lying around here and there even as we ramp up reopening to normal status.

Good, it's what is needed. If you are immunocompromised or have underlying health issues, it's your responsibility to keep yourself safe. Minimise going out, don't put hands to face, wash regularly etc. Why does the world economy have to grind to a halt to protect your ass? You know you are at risk, take measures to protect yourself.

Better to open now than later once unemployment increases to even higher levels. If people think that opening things up will mean that things go back to normal quickly, they are dreaming. It will take months for things to get even close to where it was pre lockdown. How many people have become unemployed as a result of the lockdown? You think they will be spending money just because shops and restaurants are open? They won't, at least not immediately, not with worries over the virus and lack of income. It is better to open things now and get the ball rolling than to sit everyone on their ass for a viral vaccine.

People need a reminder, some things are nobody's fault, and can not be legislated away.

You might as well make tornadoes illegal and set up "tsunami free" beaches in Japan..... some people seem to honestly believe at this point that humanity sets the rules for the planet....

Besides, the OPTION to go to work is not an ORDER. If you wanna stay home in your lead-lined vault? Fine..... free country. But that means it's also free for me to take a risk like I do every day I'm alive that I might die.

We literally have people who believe humans are the only, or at least the main input that impacts climate and that we'd magically fix everything if only we'd adopt the lowest energy density fossil alternatives and annoint the Gretato as our benevolent overlord

Because the stay at home order was the reason the curve got flattened, not, yaknow, indirectly quarantining the most susceptible.

Seriously, does the government and the media not realize people aren't retarded and know WHY the orders were done in the first place?
People have long memories (granted they also have short attentionspans but whatever), they'll remember the day the boomers forced everyone to hide because the boomers have a chance of getting sick and were too fucking lazy to quarantine themselves.

So the answer is fuck everyone, no more precaution, if it comes back? This is a bad idea and anyone who knows what a second wave does can understand that.
That is not what anyone is arguing here. They're arguing that we can't indefinitely shut down the economy over media-induced panics, because money doesn't grow on trees and a continued lockdown will only cause even more harm than the coronavirus itself down the line. Anyone who gets infected will have to take specific, individual precautions to avoid spreading the virus, not this all-encompassing lockdown.
