It's an identity that they can cling onto since they don't fit into the white world, but they can fit into the black world due to the one-drop rule. It's why you probably shouldn't race-mix unless you intend to raise your mixed race kids with the belief that their faith, virtue and most intimate part of their rational self are more important than whatever skin color they happen to be (which honestly is the ideal since it teaches them to be colorblind and judge people based off of what they do, not their physical characteristics). I'm not even against race-mixing as a whole, but I think if you can't do that, your children are prone to getting racially confused and hence taken as prey by actors wanting to monetize their largely imagined racial grievances. People that do have interracial relationships really ought to do that not only to better themselves, but to give their family a more firm basis on which to rest upon other than surface level looks (and also plan to bring it up at some point since it will come up eventually).
