US U.S. birth rate hits a 35-year low - Bad news for all you Kiwis out there who want to find a mate and procreate

The number of children born in the United States has hit its lowest level in 35 years, according to new federal data, as demographers worry that a baby bust that emerged after the Great Recession is becoming permanent.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report Wednesday that 3.7 million children were born in the U.S. last year, down 1 percent from 2018 and the lowest total number of births since 1985.

Birth rates dropped among women of virtually every age and race group, though they rose among women in their early 40s, the CDC found. Birth rates among teenagers dropped substantially, hitting record lows. The rate of teenagers giving birth has dropped by a whopping 60 percent since 2007, and by 73 percent since 1991.

Since the recession, the birth rate has risen year-over-year only once, in 2014. Now, demographers tracking the declining birth rate say the trend is beginning to look like a longer-term pattern.

"The fact that births and fertility continued to decline in 2019 despite the booming economy suggests that this is a permanent shift to a lower fertility regime in the U.S.," said Cheryl Russell, a demographer and contributing editor to the journal American Demographics.

Studies have shown the overall decline in birth rates is being driven by steep drops among Hispanic women and women who do not belong to religious organizations. A 2018 study by the demographer Alicia Munnell at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College showed the rising number of women who attain college degrees and a shrinking wage gap between women and men are contributing factors, too.

The decline in birth rates is widespread among American women of every racial group. There were fewer births in 2019 among white women, black women, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanic women than in 2018, the CDC data shows.

Now, demographers say the birth rate is likely to plunge even more in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and the economic recession accompanying it. Birth rates have historically fallen in times of economic hardship, the data shows.

"Although some have predicted a coronavirus baby boom in 2021, that seems unlikely," Russell said. "It’s more likely that young women will delay becoming pregnant during this time of uncertainty, so we could see a bigger drop in births and fertility rates in 2021."

Silver lining in all this. The decline is primarily Hispanic and Teen birthrates normalizing with the rest of the population.

Empowerment just means you get to die alone.

Not surprising, it's not like Americans are proper adults which means they're not able to produce children or even cling to a responsible mate. I honestly don't think there's any point in blaming any particular demographic since it's so wide spread. However these things come in swings and roundabouts, a drop in birth rates always indicates an uptick in the future.

And this:

Yeah, give it nine months. There's gonna' be a fucking explosion of "We were bored" babies.

Could also prove true. When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, TX there was a small baby boom nine months later because people finally had time and inclination to stay home and have lots of sex.

Actually I'm gonna add some additional thoughts. I don't think this is surprising because every single facet of American life has the message DON'T HAVE BABIES.

High school: don't have babies, you don't want to be a teen parent and your baby daddy will abandon you anyway
Church: don't have babies, you and your filthy spawn will be sentenced to hell 5ever, WHORE. Now bend over and take it up the ass from the priest.

Work: don't have babies, you don't get paternity leave/we'll fire you for taking maternity leave, your projects are more important than children and also you're a traitor if you have babies and take time off from work and also if you take time off work than you're a HORRIBLE UNRELIABLE WORKER that isn't PRODUCING ENOUGH.

Social media: don't have babies if you aren't married, single parents only exist to parade their children on social media for ass pats also children are loud and disgusting also that woman totally cheated on you so it isn't even yours/don't bother having a kid because your man will immediately flip his shit screaming that you're a cheating whore and that it isn't his and when he demands the paternity test he'll run crying to reddit after you leave him because he doesn't understand why calling you a cheating whore puts you off him completely even after it comes back that he indeed the father

Dating: don't have babies if you want a viable mate, also if you try to date when you're twenty your partner will refuse to have children and cite his/her "career" as the reason and will say "I want kids after I'm 30." If your partner gets pregnant panic and cry on social media about how your life is over while she runs to the convenience store to get plan b/cry on social media about how your babby daddy is leaving you/cry on social media about you're getting an abortion and he isn't supporting/cry on social media about how she's getting an abortion even after you blocked her and ghosted her and told her you didn't want a kid/cry on social media about how you're getting a paternity test because IT CAN'T POSSIBLY BE YOURS REEEEEEE wait what she got an abortion?! but she never asked me if I could, not that I care because it obviously isn't my kid BUT THE PRINCIPLE OF IT ALL

It's a self enforcing problem. Society has developed a phobia around children and don't want to disrupt their adult lives to have children. Adults don't trust each other enough to have kids together especially if they themselves are the products of a messy divorce.

In the future, there's only two groups of people left: Mormons and Muslims.

I thought Catholics don't believe in birth control, though. Least Mormons don't frown down on the use of condoms/safe sex (since albeit married, couples still need to be able to plan ahead even if God provides for their needs).

I also imagine the sterilization that comes from puberty blockers/HRT doesn't help, either.

I couldn't imagine raising a child in this shit show.

Every time is a dumb time to have kids. If it isn't the coronu-virus, it's the stagnant economy, or the commies probably nuking us, or one of the parents about to die of a toothache, or whatever other good reason to hold off for another couple years. Our parents and everybody else figured it out, we can too.
