Think back to when you were 17, when you were cynical kid who was already starting to get discerning about what was funny and what was unfunny. Think of what the ~3yro fad comedy character was at the time, and then think of the guy who was still "doing" the character. He did the character 3 years ago along with other people quoting it while it was fresh in everybody's mind, then after break he was the still doing it for that whole grade, and then the next grade after that he was still doing it.

Now was that guy the funny guy or was he the guy who was desperately trying to be funny.

I don't know how old you are, but stuff really did move a lot slower pre social media. People watched a lot more syndicated TV and stuff, and things were a lot more localized. If your local affiliate aired a 1993 episode of The Simpsons in 1997, for example, it wouldn't be unusual for everyone to be quoting it the next day at school. There was also a semi-popular Ace Ventura animated series a few years after the movies if I recall correctly. I'm not saying Dick isn't an attention whore for dressing up in the first place, just that pop-culture moved at a glacial pace up until the late 2000s.

*Edit* I still remember for example, people re-watching The Water Boy and Happy Gilmore and quoting them in 2001 when I was 17. Edit: This e-mail is a shining example of the kind of people that are/were fans of Dick and Maddox.

No, not really. And definitely not what the typical Dick Show fan was like over three years ago. Also, it was a Dick Show antagonist, Mental Jess, who ended up with a restraining order in the lawsuit that email appeared in. And Maddox has just now been caught, AGAIN, in backfiring gay ops, so let's not insist on conflating the Dick and Maddox fanbases here, the two groups diverged years ago.

Also, back then Dick's fans didn't really have a clue about what was going on behind the scenes, hence why "hot goss" was good fun and not just a badly aged meme. So it's not like many people knew any info to threaten Dick and his girlfriend with, as that email seems to. This wasn't just pre lolsuit, it was pre restraining order; it hadn't got nasty yet (at least not on the surface) and that email is exactly the kind of weird psycho shit from the anti-Dick camp that helped endear Dick to his audience, convince them that they were the good guys in this e-drama and turn them so vehemently against Maddox. This is, of course, what Dick will be doing again now with Maddox's latest fuck up - and can you blame him for that?

So I'm pressing X on your whole framing of that, my dude. What looks much more likely to me is that it was Jesse. That email is his whole MO; seething about and targeting 80s Girl (at a time when most Dick and Maddox fans had no clue about who she was or her role in the drama but Jesse would have been well aware of it thanks to Maddox telling him about it), threatening to release peoples' private information over the Internet, going after people at work and being such an autist that he uses e-celebs' stage names in what is supposed to be an intimidation letter and spelling dox as "doxxxxxx". Means, motive and spergertunity. Or maybe it actually was just Mental Jess. Or Maddox himself.

The "is he a lolcow?" debate was over and decided in the affirmative as it always seems to be and people were just having a good natured laugh about Maddox picking the wrong side in the culture war and how he was generally acting like a weirdo by suddenly ending his podcast, refusing to explain it to his fans and blocking people who asked him about it.

The key thing to remember is that one of the reasons Maddox lost (not talking about the lawsuit) is that he was trying to ruin Dick. Rather than just mocking the guy and taking the piss out of him as a response to his shenanigans, he took it seriously and got incredibly asshurt.

It's like how on here one of the rules is:

Be civil. Don't get angry over Lolcows. If you need to tell people you're better than someone, you're probably not.
