So Barb doesn't have to bail Chris out of jail.

Barb isn't very good at restraining Chris, but the motivation is there.

I think he's saying "Barb doesn't restrain Chris; why would you think that?"

There's the curfew and the errands, but I wouldn't use the word "restrain".

Does she really want to restrain Chris, so she doesn't have to bail him out of jail? I recall that she actually ended up arrested and prosecuted herself in the Snyder incident. In that one, if anything, she egged him on.

This.

She didn't merely egg him on. Barb was in the drivers seat and actually hit Snyder herself. Both Chris and Barb did. They actually switched seats and hit him twice, one Barb and one Chris.

I don't think he's making it up. I think he's just dumb and desperate to believe he's a special snowflake. Barb and Cole's stepfather were godawful parents. Barb very well could've been a drunken whore (as she was accused of being) and fucked some random guy.

But all Cole has is that some guy's middle name is "coleman". It's not like he's got a blood test or anything.

Shit, I'd have more respect for Cole's argument if he showed up on Maury or something. But right now? He's just content to bitch at Barb for being a whore without any real evidence.

Yep, pretty much.

Well, Chris did say that Barb was "flirting" with the crew that was working on 14 Branchland Court :surprised:, so make of that what you will. (He never specifically mentioned that she was trying to get a reduction in price on the work garner similar favors.)

Barb doesn't need to physically restrain Chris: mommy dearest says "no" and that's enough, no pushback. Chris is a wimp and he's obviously scared of Barb and what she may do in retaliation if he disobeys her.

It's sad that he doesn't understand that Barb needs him as much, possibly more, than he needs her. If Chris had the balls to actually walk out, Barb would be practically begging him (or coercing / threatening him) to come back. Chris is just too much of a pussy to stand up to her (which is what she's counting on).

The mechanics of this have always baffled me. I think I'd put this in my "moments I want to see in Chris's life." How did this even work?

I can imagine it, and it apparently happened, I just want to see it.

Barb is both underprotective and overprotective, and both in bad ways.

For instance, she "protected" him from getting proper treatment for his autism.

But she also brought him to a mall where he was banned and then let him run hog wild there and get himself arrested. Nor was this the first time she did something this dumb, since she was also actually arrested herself in the Snyder incident.

I'm not sure her motives are ill, at least in regards to Chris himself. But she is almost as out of touch with reality as Chris, and even if entirely well motivated would probably do things to harm him.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm sure she loves Chris and wants the best for him, but she thinks that he deserves it just because it is him. She still sees him and treats him as the little 8-year old he used to be, and a large part of why he hasn't grown up is because of this. This is why they still expect people to bend over backward for him, and why he keeps acting out.

"Nature vs Nurture" is a big debate in behavioral studies, but I would wager that Chris' current condition is reliant much more on the latter than the former.

It's the same bullshit parenting mistake that most parents make, but made much much worse with a potent combination of backwoods stupidity and the brain scrambling disease we know as Autism. Barb could either teach her son or leave him ignorant and protect him. When people baby-proof the house instead of letting the kid bonk their head to learn not to do it again, they're protecting instead of teaching. If they do their kid's homework for them, same thing. Barb took this approach so many times with Chris that he accepts it as the standard. He proved it in court when he calmly replied to the judge "My mother will be taking care of that."

Barb got old and ugly, her husband became distant even in the same house and eventually left her a widow, so she's had years to prepare for her current life situation. She's dependent on Chris to keep her from total misery and depression. Life with Chris was easiest when he was a young boy, so she keeps him in that role so she doesn't have to think about how unequipped he is for independent living. It's enabling, and Barb is really just as fucked up as Chris at this point.

@Marvin, do you know if SON-CHU is registered to Chris or Barb? Holding the papers on the car would definitely give her a hold on Chris; as far as I know, there's no public transportation in Ruckersville and, without a car, Chris would be fucked.

His new car is in his name, I'm pretty sure. But she's got the house, that's all she needs to control Chris.

I'd still like to see him call Barb's bluff and walk out; she'd flip her shit. If Chris could muster up the balls to do this, he'd break Barb's hold on him, maybe not entirely, but things wold never be the same afterwards. He'd regain some independence.

It'd be a pretty bold statement, especially for Chris. Though if Barb knows what she's doing, she could probably just let him sweat it out and eventually he'd cave. Then she'd have even stronger control over him.

Where would he go though, that's the question.
Rocky.

How much of Chris's money is Barb taking from him? With his SSDI entitlement, getting 200/mo. seems rather low even with his interest payments. I mean, yeah, Barb should still expect some of his money to help with bills, rent, and property taxes but I thought that his tugboat starts out at around 1200. Where's the money going?

She doesn't always take specific amounts. She takes what she needs, when she needs it.

Although, the fire is a big part of that unpredictability. As they settle down, I would imagine the amount Barb takes monthly might become more consistent.
