🐱 YouTuber Myka Stauffer Reveals She ‘Rehomed’ Her Son Who Has Autism 2 Years After She Adopted Him

YouTuber Myka Stauffer and her husband James have announced that they have decided to "rehome" their son Huxley, who they adopted nearly three years ago from China.

Myka and James said that they weren't aware of what it would be like to take care of Huxley, who has autism.

"Once Huxley came home, there was a lot more special needs that we weren't aware of, and that we were not told," James said in a video shared on Tuesday.

"For us, it's been really hard hearing from the medical professionals, a lot of their feedback, and things that have been upsetting," he continued. "We've never wanted to be in this position. And we've been trying to get his needs met and help him out as much as possible... We truly love him."

"There's not an ounce of our body that doesn't love Huxley with all of our being," Myka tearfully added. "There wasn't a minute that I didn't try our hardest and I think what Jim is trying to say is that after multiple assessments, after multiple evaluations, numerous medical professionals have felt that he needed a different fit and that his medical needs, he needed more."

"Do I feel like a failure as a mom? Like, 500 percent," Myka said, saying that Huxley was living with a "new mommy" in a "forever home."
"The last couple months have been like the hardest thing I could have ever imagined to going to choosing to do because ultimately, after pouring our guts and our heart into this little boy," she said. "He is thriving, he is happy, he is doing really well, and his new mommy has medical professional training, and it is a very good fit."
The couple asked their subscribers to honor their privacy and said that they wouldn't be going into further details about why they made the decision place their son with another family.
Just last September, Myka shared another YouTube video to update her fans on Huxley's two-year adoption anniversary.
"If you are on my channel and you are here for the Huxley content, give this video a thumbs-up," she said at the beginning of the video.

Myka, who has four other children, said in the update that the 4-year-old enjoys helping his dad make coffee in the morning and spending time outside, and expressed delight at his developmental improvements over the past year.
By Wednesday, Myka had changed her Twitter bio to say she only had four children.
Viewers of the Stauffers were quick to express their outrage upon hearing that Huxley would no longer be part of the family, with several Twitter users using the hashtag "cancel Myka Stauffer."
"So disgusting. If her biological kid gets diagnosed with autism will she abandon that kid too?" one Twitter user wrote.
"This is sickening," another wrote. "@MykaStauffer you should be ashamed and disgusted with yourself."
Many of Myka's viewers pointed out that they wouldn't want to consume parenting content from someone who would give up their child.

"Giving away one of my children isn't a viable option for me, though," wrote one Twitter user. "Surely there are better methods of managing the obligations you willingly accepted. Frankly, I'm not interested in any kind of advice from anyone who would do this."

"Okay but this myka stauffer stuff makes me really sad bc I’ve watched her since before she adopted Huxley and when I watched the video it made absolutely NO sense?" said another viewer on Twitter. "Your child was too hard to handle? So you.... gave him back? Like.... a gift receipt. That poor sweet thing."

"You’re gross for abandoning your adopted son because he didn’t fit into your cute lifestyle," another Twitter user said. "So much this," another responded. "He was done making you money or what?!"

Many Twitter users criticized Myka for using Huxley in monetized content.
"This adoption hasn’t been the easiest ride," she wrote in the caption for an ad in June 2018. "We have had so many bumps along the way! But it’s by far one of my favorite journeys I have ever embarked on! I love everything about this little boy and I wouldn’t trade him for anything!"
A Change.org petition was created demanding that the Stauffer family remove all monetized content of Huxley from YouTube.

“Rehome“

Like people do with unwanted pets.

There really are people out there who see their internationally adopted children as somehow not quite ‘real people’.

ETA: ouch https://twitter.com/thatbonnielass7/status/1265674874862870529
And saying he is in his new "forever" home is exactly how people talk about pets being adopted. FFS. Are we sure he didn't just go to "live on a farm"? Maybe somebody should check their backyard just to be safe.

Anyone who has paid any attention should know by now that international adoptions are super risky. They often come from orphanages where they were ignored and have bonding issues. They don't disclose all medical information, especially information that would make them less desirable. If you want the trendy "exotic" kid so that everyone will instantly know what saints you are for adopting, that is the risk you take. There are plenty of kids in the US who need homes, but that isn't cool enough, I guess.

You don’t get as many white saviour points for a kid of your own race born in your own country. Even though statistically, kids who are more closely matched in culture and heritage to their adoptive family report better long term outcomes.

But hey, gotta grift that “diversity” sponsorship money on the ‘gram

It's interesting that she discusses she didn't know his needs and wasn't warned. It's pretty easy info to find that international adoptions have a high rate of reactive attachment disorder and all that comes with that.

When they say rehome though, wonder if it was through the proper authorities or just blackmarket style. Seen a few true crime where those type of rehoming websites lead to dead children.

Asumming that they are honest, witch they might not be but sake argument let's assume they are, their actions saund pretty reasonable. They tried their best, seeked for help, were still overwhelmed and have other kids to think about. It doesn't sound like they had any good options and made the least shitty one.

Sad secret of both adopting and fostering is that many placements fail especially when the child is older than a baby. This isn't usually because parents don't want the kid or weren't repaired to work as getting to that point you takes long time and involves quite a bit of training about reality of these situations. It's usually do the fact the kids very special needs, even when physically and mentally normal they tend be abused or neglected. These kids don't come from staple backgrounds or healthy pregnancies and so aren't guaranteed to develop normal relationships with new parents or siblings. Actually many violently refuse. In their childish mind these people are the ones that shaked their world and put them in new high stress situation. They are kids after all and so can't understand what happening let alone make reasonable judgment who or what to be angry at. Sometimes time can help but often only real help is another family or other living situation.

There used to be a blog the documented absolute rehoming horror stories from Reece's Rainbow which catered to fundies and other religious wackjobs who treat kids like pokemon.

A lot of these people were turned down for adoption in the US because they were unfit and already had a load of kids in varying stages of neglect.

But a little charm and money greasing the right hands in former soviet bloc countries and these people would be headed home with 1,2 and sometimes 3 "special angels" at a time.
I recall cases where children were so neglected in these orphanages, you would have 6 year olds the size (and brain function) of a toddler and still in diapers.

There were so many deaths because guess what...you can't pray away horrific institutional neglect/created re.tardation AND the tried and true fundie way of the elder siblings raising the little ones doesn't work so well if the little one is profoundly re.tarded.

Then there are the stories of abuse and neglect and using the kids to scam fundraising and welfare money because silly states won't just hand out money to people (who took in a rehomed child) who have kids that they can't prove legal guardianship over.

The minute facebook opened to everyone without a student email, these people were straight up posting rehoming ads and homes open to angels in needs. They have pretty much gone underground now.

I have no idea how people admitting to "rehoming" a child are not immediately investigated by CPS at the very least.

That would be interesting to read Reece's Rainbow pretty much is 90% Down Syndrome children if i remember right.

Also first hit for china adoption agency has this in their FAQ:

Do all children from China who need families have special needs?

Yes. The majority of children in China waiting for families have some sort of medical or developmental special need. This is due to a number of factors. Namely, in recent years, China has eased their one-child-per-family policy, causing fewer families to abandon children. With China’ s growing economy, Chinese families also now have greater resources to care for their children — another factor that has contributed to fewer overall cases of child abandonment. Domestic adoption is also becoming increasingly common, allowing for children — primarily healthy infants — to join loving adoptive families in China before being considered for international adoption. However, many families are still unable to care for a child with special needs, leaving many children with special needs waiting for a loving adoptive family through international adoption. When applying, families determine their openness to age, gender and types of special needs.
Nearly half of the children Holt places from China have conditions that can either be corrected with surgery or managed with treatment, such as:
  • Cleft lip and palate
  • Orthopedic issues like limb differences or clubfoot
  • Heart defects requiring less-involved surgery
  • Atresias such as ear atresia or anal atresia
  • Prematurity/low birth weight with accompanying developmental delays or medical issues
  • Skin conditions such as birthmarks, angiomas or removable tumors
  • Developmental or speech delays
Families who are open to more involved special needs may be matched with a child with these types of conditions:
  • Complex heart defects
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spina bifida
  • HIV
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Urogenital abnormalities
  • Thalassemia requiring regular blood transfusions
  • Vision or hearing loss
  • Dwarfism
  • Albinism
  • Down syndrome

There's photos of her duct taping the little boy's hands together because she couldn't handle him.

Seriously? Well in that case I'm happy that they got him a new home for different reason, that he got away from abusive situation. Hopefully the new home can actually take care of him like he needs.
