The future of the US might resemble the one in Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, where the USA is still technically one nation but people have coalesced into what are functionally many different micronations dubbed "Burbclaves", some of which are racially segregated.
The police are also fully privatized so that leads to situations like a black cop patrolling a whites only Burbclave.
Also there's a virtual reality internet, so there's an irony of everyone being in a shared virtual space but fractured in reality.
I can see our real future being much like that.
Neal Stephenson then wrote another novel which was set further in the future and that type of society had encompassed the whole world, with the entire world being fractured into many, many different micronations made up of everyone.
Basically Neal Stephenson depicted the polar opposite of the Star Trek type one world future, which is probably way more likely to happen.
