I'm chalking this up to you just not knowing how a choke works. In a choke hold, you do not actually asphyxiate the person, what you do is cut off the supply of blood to the brain. What the officer was doing is a pretty basic choke, it twists the head straining carotid arteries, combined with the knee depressing the side of the neck, it cut off blood flow. Floyd was capable of breathing, that is why he could talk. But the oxygen could not travel to the brain.
His underlying health conditions and possible history of substance abuse is irrelevant to the fact that he died due to being in a choke hold for too long.
