Didn't think I'd end up with protests in my piece of shit town, but they showed up yesterday in front of the courthouse. Cops have the area cordoned off and are keeping watch but nothing's happened but yelling and sign waving.

My town is like 95% white. A lot of the older folks here are TERRIFIED of black people and are convinced they're going to be murdered by protesters at any moment. Businesses boarded up their windows in anticipation of possible rioting/looting. This has been a heck of a year so far.

Days of Rage by Bryan Burrough is an excellent overview of Weather Underground and other assorted radicals. The Shadow of the Panther by Hugh Pearson is a very good look at the Black Panthers. I remember it making it a bit of a fuss because it was written by a black journalist yet was not particularly flattering towards the Black Panthers. If you're interested in Patty Hearst and the Symbonese Liberation Army, I enjoyed Heiress by Jeffrey Toobin.

But history really does show that a lot of people who got accused of being closet communist actually were. Nobody really likes to admit that part.
