I’m sure many people agree with that sentiment, but it’s getting muddied by people using his death to cause even more death. It’s hard to feel sympathetic when you’re forced under curfew out of fear of your own house or business getting looted, burned, or both.

My friend recommends "Season of the Witch," which is about SF politics in the 60s and 70s. I recently read "Road to Jonestown" which was also great. Neither one is exactly what you're asking about, but they give an understanding of how we got here.

It's a literal soyboy twitter meme at this point, but Chernow's biographies are fantastic. The one about Hamilton (which inspired the musical) is a great place to start in understanding American political economy, and his one on Grant delves deeply into the Civil War and Southern Reconstruction which dominate so many of these topics today. Anyway the books themselves are fine and don't have a ton of woke bias.
