A Central Michigan University student with Midland ties could face up to 15 years in prison after being arraigned on charges stemming from the death of her 14-month-old daughter.

Grace Hunt, 22, appeared this week before Judge Sandra Straus of the Isabella County Trial Court. Hunt was arraigned on two felony charges, including second-degree child abuse and involuntary manslaughter, for her potential involvement in the death of Temperance Hunt, who drowned in the bathtub of Hunt's apartment in Mount Pleasant on the night of Sept. 13, 2019.

Hunt was granted personal recognizance by Straus and released without bond. If convicted of involuntary manslaughter, Hunt could face up to 15 years in prison and/or a $7,500 fine. For second-degree child abuse, Hunt could face up to 10 years in prison.

As reported by Central Michigan Life, CMU police responded to Temperance's drowning on Sept. 13 in Kewadin Village Apartments — an on-campus apartment complex for CMU students. The toddler had been found unresponsive underwater in a bathtub, according to CMUPD.

The case is being handled by Isabella County Prosecutor David Barberi. Hunt's next scheduled appearance in court is a probable cause hearing at 8:15 a.m. Feb. 6, followed by a preliminary examination at 11 a.m. Feb. 13.

Last fall, Hunt — using the last name Ferguson — staged a number of protests outside the Midland Evangelical Free Church, after the church's preaching pastor Jeremy Lobdell mentioned Temperance's death during a Sept. 15 sermon.
