We've gotten to the point now where we're seeing the digital counterpart to this idiocy, where companies are doing the digital counterpart to putting up the sign saying "WE AGREE WITH THIS, HONEST" just so they don't get an ineffectual outrage mob riled up. I haven't seen evidence of the dog being dead, though, don't necessarily want to. A journalist from the area has been saying the dog might still be alive out there and needs to be rescued from the man because no one provides her evidence. The animal rescue shelter is also terrified of retaliation from the violent mob if they dare speak out against this, supposedly.
