Why their activism couldn’t have been just that in the first place? If there’s anything that brings people together, it’s food and quality time with others. All these protests served to do is make people feel more alienated.

Except that isn't 100% true. There have been studies going back decades and decades showing that the 1st born is almost always smarter than the subsequent siblings. Why? They have the same genetics from the same parents. It's because nurture plays a role as well... the first child gets all the attention, the following ones get less.
