They want to get their own private mcmansions so they can move out of the piece of shit communes they live in.
But then you can move the poor, especially the poor blacks, right into those communes after 'em. I love how government housing got made, and then the good progressives of the great society proceeded to just completely ignore the consequences of that now that they could freely gentrify black neighborhoods.

Ex-friend of mine unironically tried to tell me that we were on the cusp of a post-scarcity world because of 3d printers. I asked him if he knew what PLA filament was made of (he didn't know, it's oil-based plastics). Whatever you're printing has to come from feed stock, which comes from the same place the actual items come from, which means its in a limited amount. If you're "3d-printing" food (that's a thing), the food has to exist. So does the plastic for your geegaw, so does the concrete for the bricks (3d printed structures are a thing, too), and so on and etcetera. Like most lefties his response was "Well...we'll get there! In the next 5 years or so."

The federation is not a communist society. It's made abundantly clear that private property is still a thing. The federation is essentially a very highly idealized version of America. Yes. Castle Rock v. Gonzalez. However, this was not a novel decision that came out of nowhere, and the horrifying De Shaney v. Winnebago County more or less mandated it. If you want to have your heart broken and forever lose any faith in the concept of justice itself, read Blackmun's dissent in that case.
