It was a shitshow, but if you think about how these people act and what they desire, it makes a lot of sense. They want to destroy old Western culture and put a new, progressive culture in it's place. They go out of their way to attack any authority figure who dares to criticize them, including people they claim to respect such as doctors, teachers and scientists. They even have struggle sessions like in Maoist China. I don't think these people necessarily agree with Maoist economic policy, but they idolize Mao because of the Cultural Revolution.
