The thing is... I could get behind the whole "call a number and get help for a crisis thing" but these people are just doing it the worse way possible, IMO the best way would be (even more so if there is an immediate threat such as an armed person making threats, or the like) police first (who at least have some training in trying to get things under control peacefully and force if there is no other choice), who see what is going on then they make the call for a mental health professional or who ever is most qualified for the issue at hand.

This is particularly dumb because a lot of experiments require that daily measurements be made or that some sort of maintenance be done. Bacterial cultures often need to be subcultured, and lab animals need tending to.

I guess lower-paid laboratory technicians or graduate students can do that, while the professors and other managers can take a day off and act sanctimonious about it.
