As cringe as it was I get the impression the reason Ralph tries so hard to tell people gamergate was a whole embarrassing mess is not because it was, but due to the fact he was one of the most embarrassing and exceptional people on the gamergate side and he doesn't want people looking into it. As much as Sargon and Mundanematt would like to relive those days so they can be relevant again the Gunt wants it forgotten so people don't look at all the embarrassing events, the backstabbing and self destructive behavior he caused or was involved in that goes all the way back to August 2014. Ralph's current hate and derision of gamergate is a smokescreen so people don't look into what he was doing the whole time during it.

As I've said before, I actually kinda like him now (though he's certainly on a downward trajectory) but I couldn't fucking stand the guy at the time, he was constantly involved in the scummiest shit and the person most frequently exalted as an exemplar of GG Villany, what with his constant infighting, bridge-burning and spinning around like a drunk tornado. -Brianna Wu and to a lesser extent Suey Park where the quest for victimhood pursued by very poor liars inevitably backfires.
-The Candace Owens vs Zoe Quinn fight which turned Owens from SJW to conservative.
-Nods respectfully and Kung Fu guy
-The excoriation of Sam Biddle
-The self destruction of Leigh Alexander

And I highly recommend the Peter Coffin Real Doll saga.

I've always been happy that I ignored the 'tism of gamergate when it happened but now I think maybe I missed out on hilarity.

Gamergate was interesting in a psychological sense, because it was clear the raison d'être didn't make much sense. From a gaming standpoint, no one was really paying attention to Kotaku, Polygon, or any of these other websites to begin with, at least not since 2013 at the latest; Sargon, Ralph, ando thers would dismiss criticism of the movement by these websites by saying as much, but it was more true than I think people actually grasp.

It also brought in a lot of individuals looking for only for clout. Sargon came in as the lead anti-SJW/anti-woke person, which he's already established by then he was all for (and to his credit he really hasn't changed his stance on that, even if his “edgy” bullshit is cringe as fuck). You had MundaneMatt, who again despite trying to be edgy just came off as top-tier cringe. Both of them tried to keep the movement appealing to a more mainstream clientele, so when they saw people like Ethan Ralph, Seattle4Truth, and other abrasive characters trying to slither their way in they saw the threat apparent in such a move: not a threat to their leadership in the movement—at least not directly—but a threat to the ability to stay moderate and “work” towards a “goal”: to bring “ethics in gaming journalism”.

Ralph came in thinking that because he ran some shitty tabloid, he must have more clout and pull than someone like Sargon, who “only had a YouTube channel”. He expected to immediately be a leader in the movement. While he gained a foothold, other people just as dumb as him would follow: Seattle4Truth, John Michael Kelly, Thidran, etc. They'd do everything they could to gain more power, and ultimately would fail, branching off into “GGRevolt” or whatever the fuck it was. In any case, because Sargon didn't support them, that has led to their hatred of him all these years later. Ralph was—and is—a leftist: you can see that in many of the positions he takes, such as “free college for all” (“I'm not repaying my fucking school loans, so the government can suck my [micro]dick and take the loss!”) and the passing comments he's made concerning a universal basic income. He's able to change his skin like the snake he is to fit in better with the group he's trying to court. Likewise, Thidran did much the same thing, and right now you can see it with JMK, a guy who claims to be a “devout Christian” and “anti-SJW” but has come out to say that he fully believes Vic Mignogna is a sexual predator (“Given the amount of people who have made claims against Vic, it's impossible to believe he didn't commit some of these attacks.”) He's siding with the SJWs, he's gained some headway in their movement and he's trying to go after the people who hurt his feefees.

In short, while the more moderate section wasn't exactly the best, they are far better than the “dissident” groups that were cut out like a cancer rather early on.

It's interesting to look into for lulz, but don't get too wrapped up in it. Even now, Sargon brings it up ti piss people off (“We need to get Trump to tweet about GG2.0 to REALLY trigger the libs!”).
