Weren’t the confederate soldiers all pardoned and given appropriate pensions by the military? I guess they think that these statues and the like glorify racism, while ignoring that some of those people did indeed do things worthy of praise (heck, Robert E Lee himself was against racism, only leading the Confederates out of loyalty to his home state). They don't really want us to forget about the era, which is why I'm always a little sad Republicans and boomers focus too much on "historical revisionism."

When rioters burn down and tear down monuments they're not looking at them as a symbol of something historical, but an icon of something modern. Robert E Lee is a white man. He's a symbol of modern whites to them. This is why you see people trying to commit arson on houses with American Flags flying in front of them, or why rioters tossed burning American Flags onto the statue of Columbus when they tore it down. They hate the America that exists today, not the America of yesterday.

In essence you can envision this as a kind of motte and bailey. The public-facing branch of BLM or Antifa tells everyone that they hate these statues because they're honoring racists of the past who are best left behind. That's the motte. Many people will agree that they shouldn't be honored. The bailey they're defending is what the protestors actually believe. They hate icons of white America, and Christopher Columbus is as much a present symbol of America for them as George Washington or Thomas Jefferson. They won't stop with the disliked leaders, they're going to destroy every vestige of nationality that isn't aligned with revolutionary values.

Thomas Jefferson is guaranteed to be the next target.
