The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will require films to meet “representation and inclusion standards” prior to eligibility for awards.

The Oscars didn’t reveal any details of the new standards, according to a news releaseshared by the organization Friday.

“While the Academy has made strides, we know there is much more work to be done in order to ensure equitable opportunities across the board,” Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement. “The need to address this issue is urgent. To that end, we will amend—and continue to examine—our rules and procedures to ensure that all voices are heard and celebrated.”

“Through the dedication, focus, and concerted effort of our Board of Governors and members on the branch executive committees, the Academy has surpassed the goals of our A2020 initiative,” Academy President David Rubin said. “But to truly meet this moment, we must recognize how much more needs to be done, and we must listen, learn, embrace the challenge, and hold ourselves and our community accountable.”

The initiative was created to “advance inclusion in the entertainment industry and increase representation within its membership and the greater film community.”

A task force consisting of industry leaders will be formed by the end of July, according to the news release.

The move to become more inclusive comes after the Oscars were criticized in 2016 under the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite after no people of color were nominated for awards for two years in a row.

Wasn't this already the case more or less after the "#OSCARSSOWHITE" fiasco a couple years ago? Black people won basically everything after that.

BAFTA announced they were doing this "you have to meet a certain diversity threshold or you aren't eligible" shit a few years ago. It was cringe then and it's cringe now.

I mean... people were already giving less shits about Oscars, all they’re doing is further delegitimizing whatever value the title of “Oscar winner” had. I don’t care nearly enough about the Oscars to even entertain the idea of being outraged about this. The only thing they hurt by doing this is their own reputation.

So what will be the inclusion standard? Are they talking about a checklist of how many POCs need to star and work on the film to qualify for an Oscar nom or is it going to be you had a black guy as an intern during production so you're good? is this an attempt to radically change the film industry in America or is this going to be cheap virtue signaling that will be forgotten about in a year or two?

Given the releases we’ve seen so far this year, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are the current front runners, but Jim Carrey could pull an upset if his Sonic performance is ruled a leading role.
Don’t forget that Trollz movie that came out recently.
I kept constantly seeing advertisements for it, thinking that the toy was going to come back to stores.

Now I’m back to being disappointed.

If you really want black people to be considered for Oscars, why not setup film schools in low income black neighborhoods and have the material be currated by big name directors. I mean, you wouldn't need to get film equipment. Everyone has a pretty good camera on their fucking smart phone now.

Nah, better to virtue signal and possibly break laws.
