The fact wendig is such a grotesquely unpleasant and arrogant douchebag on top of being an absolutely talentless hack who only got where he is by being an early web 1.0 "geek blogger" and asspatting and brownnosing the right people in the publishing world is what makes him so goddamn detestable, moreso even than his LOLSOKOOKY creeper facade. It doesnt cost much to not be an absolutely insufferable piece of crap, even if you are actively trying to get as much exposure as possible in order to make more than a dozen sales a year.
Then again the same can be said for all these "early internet nurd icons" like scalzi, wheaton, and doctorow who were able to leverage "i have a blog" into a decades long career by using their then niche status as a prop to networking and ingratiating themselves with the old school publishing/writing/whatever world, and cynically latching on to every trend they could to get more exposure as time went on. All of them have never risen beyond absolute and debatable mediocrity at best, and yet all of them go out of their way to be the most petty, vindictive, and spite filled pricks imaginable.
Infact now that I think about it, its entirely possible that the infestation of these specimens who used "I have a tiny presence on this new internet doohicky" as an excuse to get a chair on the big boy table in geek culture and behind the scenes in the sci-fi/fantasy publishing sphere back in the 90s is the direct cause of both "geek culture" and the sci-fi/fantasy publishing sphere and everything connected to it becoming such a completely toxic shitfest in the modern age, given how it wound up making the "big players" in these scenes wind up being talentless spods whose only gift was in shameless self-promotion and catty internet drama.

He isn't responsible for the lawsuit against the IA but he and all of the other mediocre authors who have been crying about the Internet Archive deserve every bit of scorn sent their way, though some of the better known authors deserve some time in the dunk tank too.

Why does he keep saying this shit? You can't pop back in if you never left in the first place. I've seen people making the point that this is going to tank Chuck's career and be a permanent taint on him. People still remember those musicians who got Napster shut down, if Chuck winds up being part of the Archive's takedown this'll follow him for the rest of his career.
He was already on the way out after even Disney distanced themselves from him over his Twitter antics, and those haven't stopped. I haven't checked his recent career prospects but I imagine this decade's gonna be a lot leaner than the 2010s.

I could actually understand if he was missing out on a significant portion of money to be cheering on this lawsuit win, but it's not a joke that no one was checking out his books.
Using paperbacks as the price point, he missed out on a whooping $59.43 and $49.95 in book sales. That's if they actually bought new. If they bought used, he missed out on $30 (if they actually bought the books off him). Don't forget, these books were published in 2011 and 2013; we're talking peanuts here. None of this is worth having your name attached to it.

With traditional publishing, you only get 15% royalties at most, and you only begin to collect them once you've recouped the advance. He only lost a few bucks. I wonder what his legal fees are.

Other than that, he hasn't made anything non-Miriam related since 2017 since Disney canned him and cancelled his Vader comic series. Despite this, as I said before, Disney keeps referencing his crap and characters he made, and the Mandalorian will bring to life one of his garbage characters apparently, which I hope doesn't turn out to be the case because it might give him a massive ego boost and fans of that show might start defending him too.

He published two books in 2019. Wanderers looks like it did pretty well. A book with the stupidest title of all time is scheduled for 2021. As far as frequency goes, I think that is pretty typical for authors of major publishers, traditionally one book a year is about all they're allowed, though I'm not sure to what extent that applies to ol' Chuck.

I've been in that store during visits to the city. It was one of those God-tier stores you never forget. I remember finding tons of old out of print books and short stories. I got my complete adventures of Conan hard copy there.
Really sad to hear it's gone.

Of all the "soyboy" dudes on this site I think Wendig is the top of the pile. That weird forced bit where he tried to make himself an apple-influencer alone is so cringe and literally nobody cares, but it's that performative goofiness that defines him. You look at these guys and they're not fun, they do not enjoy life, they are not actually wacky and funny.
What they are is angry, and online, and strange. So these people decide "I wanna be funny, so I'm gonna be weird, and so I'm gonna do something really aggressive and autistic."
Many people try to be influencers with this route. They wanna just be crazy about a retarded thing and somehow that becomes a bit. I'm gonna be the guy who rants about lawn chair ads, and every 5 tweets it'll be about how everyone who hates communism is a nazi. Eat shit.
All his positive affirmations are like this, too. "Hey you lovely apple, go out there and kick the moon in the mouth-ass, make a spear out of the best spaghetti in the world, fly a rocketship into a quasar made of candy" shut the fuck up, you are not even a human if you write things like this.
It's consumerist confidence, it's the death of civilization, it's some fat dope who wishes he was gay because that would make him interesting, wearing an ironic t-shirt and a beard because that's acceptable masculinity, using every ounce of his being to be a guru nobody asked for and telling you that everything you're doing right now is awesome, but you can also be a magic animal superhero with a neon surfboard at your job.
If I had to make a monument to the destruction of everything that was good about America, it would be Chuck Wendig.
