This is a tragedy this guy got shot. I don't know why others are taking the attitude of "resist arrest, get shot" being so okay. I was already pretty doubtful of this case because they shot him while fleeing but I thought maybe there was a risk to others in letting him go because he was a violent criminal like George Floyd or something. And I expected some aggressive person who provoked a fight. What I actually see here is a regular dude who voluntarily parked his car to sleep it off a little who had the cops called on him for no reason other than he was asleep in a parking lot. He was co-operative, polite, he was so far as I can see honest and upfront. He volunteered to walk the few miles back to his sister's if they wanted.
Because you got the facts wrong. Watch the body cam video.
He admitted to driving the car while being so drunk he didn't know where he was. He didn't "pull over to sleep it off", he insisted he just wanted some food and was asleep in the drive-thru line, which was what prompted the 911 call. The first cop on the scene had to wake him up twice just to get him to move the car out of the lane and into a parking spot.
After failing 2 sobriety tests, he admitted he had been driving drunk. That gets you arrested pretty much everywhere, even if all you do is sleep it off in a cell overnight. You don't get out of a DUI just for being polite for 26 minutes.
And yeah, he was co-operative,
until he flipped instantly and started fighting the cops. They warned him multiple times even while fighting, and he still kept fighting and grabbed their weapons. Oh, but he ran away; sure, fine, except
he ran away while firing back at the cops.
Morally, did he deserve death? No. Am I glad he's dead, in terms of universal justice? No. But he wasn't shot for being a calm, thoughtful drunk. He was shot for grabbing weapons and firing them. If the alcohol made him do it, that's tragedy of a kind, but the lesson is the same one mankind has known for 4000 years: you get in trouble when you get drunk.
The cops deserve reinstatement and hazard pay for this shit.
