Rod Dreher refers to this pattern as the "Law of Merited Impossibility".It always goes that way with the left.
I remember when back in high school and college, the talk was "We aren't going to take your guns, we just want to protect innocent people from gun violence" and slowly over time that has turned into "why do you need a gun? Seriously, we should just outlaw them"
