Only on this first video here, but what a great listen already at twenty minutes in. Most other places in the world, if we saw the images of the rioting in our democratic cities, those poor black people wouldn't be breaking into grocery stores to destroy and burn and express their grievance, but in order to eat.

In The True Believer (a fantastic book, btw), Eric Hoffer writes that mass movements arising out of feelings of oppression don't tend to happen when the oppression is severe, because people are too busy being oppressed to organize. Rather, they tend to really gain steam once the oppression starts to let up. People have time to act on their feelings of oppression, and want to seize the momentum of the turning tide.

He's discussing largely materialistic concerns (aka actual oppression), but I could see a similar dynamic arising in the symbolic/performative -- you have grievances, a currently sympathetic climate -- why not? In particular, the climate can grow more sympathetic regardless the validity of the feelings of oppression.

I'm trying to be neutral in the above as to how performative/materialistic the current protests are, as well as to what extent the feelings of oppression are [un]justified, as I don't think it's relevant to the point.

Also, it’s frequently impossible to police things. You’re usually stuck in half a dozen migrations between competing service providers, because it was ”cost effective” to migrate half the company, and now nobody can find anything and there are some critical flows being managed by a team in Astana for some reason

I'll admit I wear a tinfoil hat pretty often, but I've always told people that when you see the leeches jump ship and head to China, you'll know that the US is about to fall.

So this video is unrelated to the current happenings, it's still unclear who is in the car but the dudes around it are Chechens from all around France who gathered up to beat the living shit out of thugs after they attacked a young Chechen earlier this week.
You have other videos of them patrolling the streets at night like you'd see a militia enforcing a curfew :story:
