I just read them on recommendation from some blog. It's a very sobering read, especially as they recent accelerated events unfold.

Probably late with this, but I'm still confused by this ActBlue thing. ActBlue has political ties, yes, but it was created as a non-profit donation platform for left-spectrum causes (including but not limited to Democratic Party fund-raising). It's basically a wemakeit for progressive groups. No money is ever donated to ActBlue itself, ActBlue is just the middleman between donors and BLM, in this case. Associated Press put out this clarification just a couple days ago (archive):



People were pointing out that the BLM donation button links to the ActBlue website, as if they had found the smoking gun, but it only proves that BLM is a left-leaning organisation, it is not proof that the money is going to the Democratic Party.

The discussion should be about what BLM is actually going to do with that money.

No one knows what BLM is doing with the money or how much of it they're claiming.

The thing with ActBlue is that if a campaign doesn't cash the check within 60 days, the check is voided and it goes into ActBlue's slush fund which is spent exclusively on democrat campaigns and candidates.

To the tune of over a billion dollars per year.

AFAIK they have no obligations to disclose which campaigns did not cash the checks (but quite obviously if they're getting over a billion dollars from it, the answer is "probably most of them") and BLM does not disclose where its money is going as far as I can find.

Side note: If you want to see which "fact checkers" are biased (most of them) look at the little "fact checks" they've done on this and note whether they even mention anything about the "keep the loot, spend on dems" part.

The above is a pretty gross over-simplification. It's actually way shadier than that. ActBlue is itself an entity made up of several sub-entities (as is BLM). To further confuse things ActBlue, in addition to taking money and handing it over to organizations also can be used to donate directly to political campaigns on behalf of the originating organization (which basically means the expenditure discloses are muddied).

The gist is there's a lot of money being moved around, and no one can track it. The Feds can't properly investigate (right now) either because it would be seen as a political attack in the current climate and probably tank Trump's re election chances. I suspect these folks are banking on Trump not getting re-elected so everything gets swept under the rug.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he gets re-elected if an investigation is opened up.

Freedom to choose and act are the greatest blessing and curse in life for us. We're lucky/blessed to be able to choose our own actions and how we affect the lives of others, but the downside is that we experience the results and consequences of others' actions as well. In this phase of living, we're in the "testing" phase, and there seems to be no karmic justice consistently meted out, because it would invalidate the test. The only thing we can control is ourselves, and overcoming our weaknesses and base desires is the point of life. I think the scorecards are still kept, and after you finish living in the meat phase you'll have to answer for your actions at some point.

I'm glad we don't live in a just world though, I don't know how many of us would survive the bar of justice by which we measure others.

My doom isn't from watching TV or shit. I actually pretty much get my politics by being forcefully exposed to it, or this thread. My dooming is coming from actually interacting and talking with regular people. You say it's all the same shit all over again, but no, the world has and will continue to change in permanent ways. We ended widespread, legal slavery in the west, an institution that has been around forever, we entered the information age where we can communicate across the world in seconds, we now get most of our property sent to us in the mail as opposed to going to a retail chain and buying it. It's not just a cycle, shit changes and can change drastically.

It's not even the riots themselves that concern me it's the reflection of where our culture is. The people in it. Their characters, their interests, how well you can get along with them. Fuck the political shit, I'm interested in the personal shit and who we are and how we grow as people, etc. We need other people to develop and improve our own lives. What happens when all those people are gone and are walking bags of shit? The problem with all this is is that I'm spending my life in a society filled with moral panics where there isn't even really a place to escape. Maybe someday things will make sense, but the good years our lives will pass us by.

It's hard to be a social animal, a proper human, in a world where your conspecifics are so profoundly broken and ill in their minds.

Furthermore, the rot goes deeper than just politics. Music, movies, everything is shit, and now every other person is a fucking "nerd" or "geek" that swallows up pop culture. I don't like where pop culture has gone. In the past if were some way, you could just go to the place where there would be some people like you. I think music peaked mid 60s - very early 90s and movies peaked 70s-90s. Books, our best author is JK Rowling? I think in all dimensions we are a dark age of a society. I think the internet has had some very profound changes on humanity that we couldn't have anticipated but nonetheless are there.

Look, I know things may return to normal, but they've been getting worse and worse my adult life and I don't see them improving soon. The silver lining I do see is the rise of a new counter-culture that isn't afraid to be edgy. We got the punks and then goths from disgruntled youth that felt they didn't belong and that they were suffocated by stodgy and uptight British society, I'm desperately hoping for a new counter-culture that that is apolitical at its core but willing to tweak the noses of stuffy mainstream society.
