I don't think george floyd made people show their true colors, I think seeing cities burn, people riot, and the response from every authority being this is safe and okay changed people. We got to actively see our country go up in flame and watched as institution after institution supported it. It only got worse as media covered it up and you started to get mocked for showing how much damage the protest had done and your job would have meetings about how awfull the country is and the only place you could vent was here. Look at A&H now the people are a lot less unhinged than before and seemed to have calmed down.
Think of it like this, you spent the weekend watching building after building burn with a group of people who knew how bad it was. During the week you go into work and you have an hour long meeting about how bad blacks are being treated, your co workers won't shut up about how awful the world is for blacks, if you try to show them any numbers you are a biggot that gets to lose their job, you go to the gym the T.V.'s have stories of random black people claiming the U.S. has been harming them for 500+ years, you go home check the news every channel is playing an interview about the drug addict felon that got shot telling you how much of a good boy he was. As the week progresses your company has more meetings about racism, politician after politician falls to the mob and even the party of law and order has a hard time standing up. The pope holds a cerimony for a man that nearly performed a gun assisted abortion, and the criminal is being treated like a saint. The most common attack used against you if you try to attack the riots is that you are racist. After a week or even a day of that your going to need to vent and since you can't vent to your familly anymore guess which gossiping forum gets your bile.
Yet, nothing is idiot proof
