If these people said "Hey, we don't like this statue and what it represents, we want it taken down" and went through a sensible process for doing that (petitioning the local government, making arguments to the community, etc) it would be a lot less controversial. Asking for something in a calm, reasonable way is good. I may not agree with their logic, but I would approve of them going through the right channels to make it happen.

But that's not what they're doing: They're going out and saying "These statues are racist/evil/bad and that means they need to be ripped down, damn the opposition" and pulling them down themselves. There is no discussion, there is no reasonable requests- they're a mob throwing their weight around and daring anyone to stop them.
